      none of those people can play more than 6 notes at once. Imagine your piano just had 6 keys, no matter how skilled you are, you can't play more than 6 notes simultaneously. Not because they're not amazing but because guitars have 6 strings.

  • @penguindrum264
    @penguindrum264 5 років тому +157

    For anyone wondering, he may be playing these chords randomly but a lot of these substitutions are logical He uses modal interchange and a lot of ii-Vs (with tritone subs) from C minor or C major or into different keys like F minor or the ii of Ab(the bVI or bIII). Modulating to the mediants create a really hip sound over a vamp. Sometimes he uses rootless voicings and voice leading is the most important things but you don't have to always follow them. Also augment chords from the whole tone scale, and b6 on minor chords instead of the usual natural 6, but you can mix either or along with voice leading and jumps to add interest.
    Explaining and playing this stuff is another matter though.

    • @damoncouch52
      @damoncouch52 5 років тому

      Do you know any written resources on how to use those techniques? Other than this dudes website. I know where to find info on modal interchange, but not like that^

      @gatsbyfairbanks5977 7 років тому

      yo can i ask what do you mean by 'break down lessons with the theory" what would that be? just how its written on a stave? or theory as to why it works... thanks

    • @RichardBerg
      @RichardBerg 6 років тому

      Virtually every chord he plays is drawn from two very common diatonic scales (Cmaj & Cmin). The ones rooted on Db and Gb don't really fit the pattern but I guess he included them anyway so you could practice up & down as shown.

    • @Mejoree113
      @Mejoree113 6 років тому +3

      Even the Db and Gb ones are often functionally similar to other more 'normal' chords. For example a bII7 chord (Db7 in this case) can often fill the role of a V7 chord (G7 here) because the 3rds and 7ths are a mirror of one another. For Example:
      Db7: Db F Ab B
      G7: G B D F
      You see how close the chords are? When it comes to unusual chord ideas, it's amazing how simple many of them are when you look beyond the traditional, more classical approach to theory :) Always be asking WHY does that sound good, the answer probably isn't that complicated :)

    I was hoping for a more music theory breakdown of your chord construction, such as: at 8:01, how are you getting Db to sound so good in an Fmin chord? For me the hardest part to understand is how you build such odd chords that sound so dang good. Do you have any videos on that? This is my first time finding your stuff!

    • @prettysimplemusic
      @prettysimplemusic  7 років тому +5

      Welcome and thanks for watching. It's IMPOSSIBLE to grasp or even begin to teach this in 11 minutes... so, if you want it broken down step-by-step with Chord Names and Piano Staff visuals (WITHOUT any background music loops), head over to www.prettysimplemusic.com for the COMPLETE breakdown, ...I even included several extra bonus files included as a bonus + you get the loop mp3 to practice with for free!!!!

    • @dopaminecloud
      @dopaminecloud 6 років тому

      Very late reply so you honestly ought to know by now, but it's the lowest note and the chords before and after that shape context.
      In this case I believe that Db is actually the third of the Bbm11, which is a very standard chord, not odd.
      Stack thirds, move some up or down an octave.

    Brilliant demonstration, had to pause the video so much to get a grasp, ended up playing at 0.25 speed. For those saying he doesn't explain things, look the keys light up and have the notes written above them. A person could totally learn how to do this but it's going to take like 20-30 run throughs. If you want to learn you have to put the effort in.

    In my days as a youth, I was fascinated with chordal progressions in music as well as the real classics. I did study but found that there would be very little room in the industry due to the many great talented performers. If there was UA-cam in my day -- I would have never touched a piano!

What Is the Theory Behind putting these left and Right hand chords together ( for this genre and in General )? How do you know that they will Automatically Work so well without Mud ? lol My fingers can get there (still need polishing ) but playing the correct thing is difficult
