Demi Shanahan, you are an amazing coxswain! You steered the most amazing course, plus your calls were calm, collected, and effective! I learned tons from your video. I feel that you knew your rowers well, and were plenty motivational by the calls (psychologically worked for the rowers!). It's refreshing to see a coxswain who understand the value of silence and doesn't scream during the entire 5k. Thank you for sharing!
I learned so much from just this one video, really good steering nice calls and intensity. This is what I want to hear as a rower and what I want to be as a coxswain. Also amazing reaction from the rowers when they go up one at the end. Awesome!
I agree the steering was great, but I disagree about the coxing. The biggest part of coxing is steering, but the next is execution. As a rower, cox, and coach I would've preferred more of a technical focus instead of just filler (i.e. catch send, push send), something that the US national team cox coach touches on too. If she incorporated a move for the entire boat (i.e. when passing drexel, call a 10/15 for swing and commitment) and focused on specific technical things throughout different stages of the racing, I would consider that "next level" coxing. Obviously it's better to have a cox who can steer, but I don't agree with her style
I can see what you mean. I know for some of the crews I coxed all I needed to say was "drop your outside shoulder," and not only that improved but the entire stroke did, like a magic fix-it-all (or most of it). Maybe "sharp hands" and "send" is like that for this crew. Would be interesting to talk to the coxswain about that. At least, for a cox who is trying to talk less during races (ie me) this is quite awesome to watch :)
Great calls, perfect level of intensity in her voice. I would not want 15 plus minutes of screaming during a head race. It's important that rowers remain relaxed during the recovery portion of the stroke. A screaming coxie does not help in this regard. I always wanted my coxswain to keep the boat focused on the race plan and to keep me informed of upcoming changes in course. Rowing well and pulling hard for the rest of the crew was all the motivation I needed. Good race Michigan.
Really nice steering. Putting the bouys between the blades and the boat. No motivation? Baloney, and if you need more motivation than this when you are, ahem, racing, well then that's on you. This cox was obviously extremely well prepared and gets a big share of the credit for the result.
I find it funny people are upset at the lack of screaming... She was calm, knew her stuff..and oh yeah, they destroyed the course. Some of you just have some repressed S&M thoughts...

nice use of ahem
Have you ever rowed a race? Someone speaking like this would just make me wanna jump out the fuckin boat
Amazing steering here, really good combination of powerful rowers and a great cox. Beautiful.
This Coxswain sounds like TImmy Turner, once you get it in your head, you can't get it out
I find it funny people are upset at the lack of screaming... She was calm, knew her stuff..and oh yeah, they destroyed the course. Some of you just have some repressed S&M thoughts...
Hell yeah feminism, do you support segregation?
badass steering, weird ass calls
true
Maybe you don’t row? Lol
Thats some great steering, not an easy course to steer on
How does this race start? Is it a flying start or is it staggered I’m confused
Legs send
Cool thanks 👍
daym, gnarly rowing
No motivation...as a rower I would be disappointed with the coxswain. Good technical cox but need more motivation.
have you ever rowed? because i mean.... Coxswain's don't need to be that loud or have to have that much motivation.....
But do you see that steering?
I’ve had coxswains like her and they are a lot better than the ones that scream
They won. How did your boat do?
Too repetitive with the calls, too much of Legs Send
SHE SOUNDS LIKE TIMMY TURNER, I would laugh way too hard while racing while thinking about it to row well
no motivation
Your dad is cheating on your mom Alex
Amazing calls, but he sounds like he's a 12 year old cartoon character from nickelodeon
I think that she is a girl.
I AM GOING TO INSULT YOU a lot of male boats have girl coxswains; they're smaller
