You took a Harley Benton and put over a grand worth of upgrades in it? Congratulations, Henning! You've exceeded our expectations for crazy, even from you! A new high point for the channel!!!!
you know, when i think that Slash's guitar was a Gibson Knockoff I kinda think, you could take a well made knock off and make a damn good guitar if the effort is there and decent materials. I also have two wonder because looking at my mexican strat vs a custom shop, the difference is largerly, tuners, pickups, and masterful setup and fret work. Not sure how much tuners matter and that leaves you a master setup, swap the pickups and masterful fretwork.
Let me call you out real quick, Working at a guitar store i know the difference well between custom shop instruments and the more affordable line of instruments. The more money you spend does not necessarily mean better playability or performance. BUT from experience buying something like a les paul studio faded or a les paul tribute is just shit. everything from the setup to the fret job is done very very badly. the quality control is terrible too for the more affordable instruments. if we step up to the custom shop les pauls such as a R9 reissue i will tell you that you will never hear a guitar sound better and play with more ease. my point is that guitars are all made differently. the fact that you obviously haven't had the chance to own some more premium instruments tells me you dont really know what you are talking about. if you dont belive me just go to a guitar store and try a PRS SE then try a prs custom 24 spot the difference
A big flaw in your argument is Les Paul, cheap Gibson are built terribly and have bad QC but some of the Japanese and Korean made Les Paul copies like Tokai arent bad at all and just not to be setup well with good hardware, also Fenders are a different bag, their simple design means the difference is less so. That said certain guitar styles like semi acoustics need to be made pretty well to be great especially with painted set necks and such, for example a high end Deusenberg slays nearly any Gretsch especially the low end models.
Let me call you out real quick - you will find guitars that sound better and play easier than custom shop Gibsons at that price range because you can get custom built guitar, which is simply superior than Gibson.
PLEK is basically a CNC machine specifically designed around doing guitar necks more specifically fret and nut profiling. It started in the 90's by Plektron. Gibson has been using them since 2006. I own about 70 guitars after 45 years of playing Framus, PRS, Fender, Suhr, Gibson and others and my top two favorites are Suhr and then Gibson in that order. All the best.
I agree. Who is this guy trying to be? I can't stand it when guys think they are funny and clever. He's trying too hard and just comes off annoying and it shows that he knows very little about guitars and how they are made. Enough with dumping on Gibson! They make some of the greatest guitars in the world! I know all about the Plek machine. I just thought maybe the video would show one up close while it did it's thing. Oh well. At least I know NOT to watch another one of this clowns videos again.
@Randy Holder This guy has actually some good content, but in this world where we are the children of instant gratification, all this fun and giggles can look like he's just bulshitting around. I really would love to have a video that would be like 'David Attenborough on the PLEK-machine'. That would be great. This video, on the other hand, I haven't learned anything because of all of the collateral information that shattered my instant gratificational programmed brain. . .
"It sounds like I am advertising for Thomann..." Don't worry. I feel the same about this company and I have never been to Germany. My experiences with them though have made me feel extremely loyal to them. I would gladly big them up for free after all the great service I have had from Thomann. I've found myself paying slightly more to get something from them because I know I am safe rather than saving a few euro by buying from Amazon or GAK etc.
My Gibson SG Derek Trucks guitar came with a PLEK'd neck and the fretwork and playability are perfect. That being said, I have quite a few guitars that play just as well that weren't PLEK'd. I loved the time lapse video of the fret job BTW.
I have not had the best luck with Thomann service. Two items have died, and I've gotten two email replies stating they have no record of ever having sold them to me. One is a freakin house brand. Good times.
Can you include a German word of the day regarding guitars so when us Americans travel to Thomanns we can talk to your buddy too? Thanks for the great video .
I enjoyed the video and while I know it's all the rage now to bash Gibson, maybe I got lucky, but my low end Les Paul tribute is an amazing instrument. Hands down, it plays and sounds every bit as nice as any guitar I own and I have quite a few. I am aware that quality control has been an issue for Gibson, but they are NOT all trash and even the sub $900 models like mine can be awesome guitars.
I own 5 pauls but they are all 2011 and older. There are serious problems with Gibson quality control right now and people are getting guitars with neck binding that has spaces in it and headstocks are breaking off during shipping due to weakness. I have tries some 2016-2017 pauls and they are not very good. Gibson will be increasing prices 10percent wholesale this year because they are 540 million dollars in debt.
Hey Nicholas, i am sorry to hear about your problems with Gibson. I have about 15 Gibson instruments and they are all perfect. I recently purchased a 2016 all mahogany Les Paul. Geez, what a gem. I really hope that Gibson can survive in the future. They have created more good than bad. No one is perfect but I think they are one of the best guitar manufacturers on the planet. (my opinion) rock on. be safe.
The headstocks do not break due to weakness, they break from side impacts due to shoddy shipping practices when they are shipped without an outer protective box to prevent it, it happens to Epiphone's too if shipped the same way. Order one from Sweetwater for example and you'll get an undamaged guitar unless something truly dramatic happens. I love my 2016 Gibson, but then again, I have an exceptionally small test group personally. If you drop a Gibby and the headstock snaps, then you can complain about the 17 degree angle and the lack of a scarf joint. You won't get any arguments from me about that. Of course I would love Gibson to get their crap together but when the new team starts shipping out Armstrong LPJ's for $1400 it's obvious they're trying to reestablish profits before making amends for the disaster that was wrought previously. Bite the bullet, make a bunch of top shelf products at reasonable prices across the price spectrum and bring honor back to the name first. Flooding the market with some pie in the sky arsenal won't correct what went wrong, expand the selections for your bread and butter guitars and keep the crazy ass Star Trek Flying V's in your back pocket until you start to prove yourselves again. On another point, I've been eyeing up some of these Harley Benton's and I have to say that I'm pretty impressed with many of them for the prices they're asking. Many of them have amazing tops that you'd expect to be 5 times the price, a multitude of on line face to face comparisons have also left me pretty damn impressed. Now, if a few stores would stock them in my area, I could have a shot at playing one personally. I'd prefer doing that before having one shipped and have all that effort put into something I'm just unsure of yet. It looks like Guitar Center sells them as soon as they accept a used one in. Too bad Thomann hasn't worked out a deal with any brick and mortar stores here in the states. It'd be the first guitar I'd pick up if I saw one.
EytschPi42-thanks for showing this! I recently heard Gibson PLEK’s without having the strings on, which does not give accurate tension, etc. Very cool machine!
I own a mid 90s Gib 335 and a 2013 LP Standard that came factory Plek'd. They feel different but both play like beauties. I also own an early 90s Studio that is an amazing player also but haven't picked it up in ages. I think part of the issue with purchasing guitars these days is that many people buy online vs. putting their hands on the guitar and trying it before buying. I would NEVER buy without actually playing a guitar, but everyone is different
I really want to hear what that Harley Benton sounds like all pimped out! Been thinking about sending my Hello kitty guitar (Most metal guitar ever) over there for a stainless steel re-fret.
Could you make another stainless steel refret and Plek with close up footage to see how the work is done? Thomann customer reports aren’t all that good and I hesitate a lot
I took a gamble on a 2nd hand Gibson melody maker that was going cheap and was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting to get a cheap feeling guitar but it actually feel really nice and super comfortable to play.
being built in Asia are the Harley Benton's Metric Bridges? I figure they are, so if I decided to buy one and do the same change all the parts and make it more personal.

I think it's the only place in Europe where you can get PLEK jobs done, you'd really only do it for high end guitars though cause the PLEK itself is at least 200 euros and it's gonna cost you like 50 more just to send the guitar to Thomann in Germany, for most people it's useless and you'd rather just get it set up at a local luthier
i got a plek job on my schecter 6 string and after playing it, I did not like it. The guitar becme much more difficult to play on especially single note stuff and frettig notes passed the 12th fret. My first guitar i grew the connection with, ruined and now i never play it after the plek job
I don't understand the gibson bashing either. Every sub 1500 guitar I've played has compromises. For example the pickups on a PRS SE are dull sounding. Gibson on the other hand have better stock pickups (to my taste). I know I'd choose a Gibson Les Paul Classic over a PRS standard because.. I did.
islanderwinder--Having bought a Gibson Tribute recently I have to agree with you. I don't think it's had even a basic fret dress and the fret ends from the 12th fret on are as sharp as a very sharp thing. Bloody disgrace.
Is it possible to create some kind of fall away fret levelling with plek, but it starts from the first fret instead from 14th-17th? So the fret height is lower and lower all across the neck.
I played a pleked guitar recently and it was a real let down. No better (maybe worse as no attention is payed to the fretboard edges) than a proper fret job and set up and costs twice the price. But I guess they make sense for big centres as they can pay less for lower skilled workers while charging more for new technology... What a world we live in.
Subscribed after GiutCon. Good event. Watched lots from there. Please stop bagging Gibson with "Gibsons are sh!t": etc huh? I do not think it is fair, even though it seems popular to hate on them lately. I have a PRS right now that I like, but have had several Gibsons ranging from SG Standard thru to LP Custom. Never had the slightest problem with them and they have been a pleasure to play. Not a fan of some of their pups tbh tho. I have a Laney now, but had some damn good Marshalls too. Unlike Gibson, I can't say I did not have problems with them. One blew up (1959RR). Their dealer was cool and gave me a refund, so all good. But man some of the Marshalls I have either played or owned sounded good.
Interesting that you plek your guitars. I don't like pleked guitars. Mostly, the frets get too flat. I'm thinink about to refret all my Gibsons, because they come pleked, unfortunately.
+Thomas Lund completely different price points... if Gibson retailed for 500 bucks the quality would be ok, but they are not... you have to consider the price of something you review.... a Harley Benton guitar is unbeatable in its price range... Gibson guitars can be beaten by many other brands in their price range.
EytschPi42 i get your point.. but you cam compare it to an iphone and a cheap android phone, many owners of cheap phones says an iphone is shit to defend that they cannot afford to buy into an expensive brands products. People also pay 500 bucks for a pair of Nike shoes when you can get some for 100 that feels just as nice, but you pay into the history and image of that brand. Same with Gibson. I have 2 Harley bentons i will admit they are super good for that insane price, but they do not come close to my R9 les paul, its a different league. But are the R9 worth the money as 20 Harley bentons would cost, thats up to the user and the feeling you get when playing it, thinking about the heritage of the Company that made it. I think you get what i mean. I just think its wrong to say its shit because its expensive.
my current and my last car combined did cost less then my main rig. And I play in a band with 3-4 gigs a year that makes about 3 months worth of rent for the band session room in a good year. ^^ we are not even close at all to earn the "running costs" of the band; let alone get a profit out of it. PRIORIITIES :D Music > Profit/Sense
The plek machine is great when used properly which is not what gibson does :) They do not measure each guitar individually to plek it as it needs to be. They just stuff guitars in and run a generic LP or SG, or whatever model they plek. Doing measurements on EACH guitar is just not doable giving the sheer number of guitars they put out. It can turn out awesome, or total shit, depending on how the original neck is compared to the spec. So nothing new here from gibson, but in addition they give PLEK a bad name by putting out inferior PLEK work, not using the machine to its full potential.
perhaps you would like a guitar entirely built by robots...I am not anti tech, I am anti hype...plek is an overblown technology that cannot take in to account the natural movement of wood over time...
I don't really care who builds it as long as I like the result. I'm definitely not defending the hype, it's just specialised CNC machine. I've tryed some supposedly pleked Gibsons... It's definitely capable of doing very poor job. As any CNC machine if put idiot into "driving seat" you can't expect much. Thanks for your clarification.
You took a Harley Benton and put over a grand worth of upgrades in it? Congratulations, Henning! You've exceeded our expectations for crazy, even from you! A new high point for the channel!!!!

Gibson Plekt auch nur weil, sie es auf die normale Weise nicht sauber hinbekommen. PRS braucht für einen Hals nicht ohne Grund bis zu 1Monat
Plek is just a machine way to do frets, it can't replicate a craftsman with hands on. Still has to be finished by hand.
I mean I am not a Gibson stan but I love my ES lol
Cool shit indeed
...or a Henning Benton...
But man some of the Marshalls I have either played or owned sounded good.
g&l uses this process
Interesting that you plek your guitars. I don't like pleked guitars. Mostly, the frets get too flat. I'm thinink about to refret all my Gibsons, because they come pleked, unfortunately.
To be hohnest Thomann has really good service. And I am Not from Germany😜
They should have solar panels
Henning gives Leslie a Plek Job every morning, only reason she stays with him.
I'm gonna plek you baby...
4:10 Of course, he's German, gründlich.
Loves harley benton, and says gibson is shit... okay.. hahahah
Oh a Gibson hater im gone
....or a Harely Pauly....
Guitarists seem to enjoy assuming their way through a day.
So you got a billion dollars worth of guitars and gear but drive a piggy bank as a car? Priorities!
Sell the gear, buy a Type R :o
my current and my last car combined did cost less then my main rig. And I play in a band with 3-4 gigs a year that makes about 3 months worth of rent for the band session room in a good year. ^^ we are not even close at all to earn the "running costs" of the band; let alone get a profit out of it. PRIORIITIES :D Music > Profit/Sense
JamCave Studio
$25,000 🚗: worth $10,000 in 5 years, $500 in 15
$25,000 🎸: worth more every passing year.
Should we maybe clean that filthy keyboard? 🎶🎸
Gee, a guitar video without playing the guitar... where is that, Not Interested, button
Too much coffee man.
So in other words if you do all kinds of stuff to a HB then its ok otherwise its a big hunk of shit.
I would rather pay a Luthier £200 than a machine....
if you don't like the way gibsons are ..maybe this machine sucks??
Harley Benton blows ass.. theyre for people trying to justify not buying better guitars.
He is correct when he calls Gibson crap.
Pac pac pac pac pac pac
Pac pac
so.. you don't like Gibson guitars.. now you just found out Gibson pleks all guitars,, so? now what is your real opinion of this machine?
The plek machine is great when used properly which is not what gibson does :)
They do not measure each guitar individually to plek it as it needs to be.
+usopp Barbosa, How did you come to believe this? What's your employee ID?
Der mit der Brille nervt igendwie völligst,ab!
den muss man erst mal kennenlernen
Ruined what could have been an educational video. 👎👎👎
Annoying personality...
this is simply a robot taking jobs from skilled people!
They will charge you the same...and keep the profit...this job can be done better by a human!
Gibson was one of the first to embrace this...that should tell you something
Would you like to go before industrial revolution or just before any automation? I mean CNC machines are nothing really new.
perhaps you would like a guitar entirely built by robots...I am not anti tech, I am anti hype...plek is an overblown technology that cannot take in to account the natural movement of wood over time...
What is the guitar that is on the machine first?
That is probably the Quenzel M3
