So what restrictions have been put in place to allow such a volume of water to concentrate in. Hebden bridge is high, there are numerous courses off the moors. Whats different now as opposed to 50 years ago.
Maybe the wind turbines being built on the moors above tod in the upper catchment? It never used to come over the wall at callis but now it's happened twice!
Did you knownatural countryside absorbs 70% more water than farmlands, 100% more water than concrete and tarmac. Every house you build is land where nothing can grow land that cannot absorb water. But that's the human species criteria isn't it to cover the whole UK in concrete and cry a modem about all the problems this behaviour is going to create. I hear the government talking about massive boom in jobs and housing, it just shows you the people you vote in haven't a clue where they live and it shows you they have no interest in the future pass their lifespan, and apparently the people who vote them in have the same mindset. If you destroy your environment then jobs and wealth will mean nothing because you won't be here. iit's time for the human race to get its priorities right and at the top of the list should beat environment not creating jobs and wealth. what's laughable about all these is that the human race claim to be the most intelligent life on the planet, look around you and the state of the planet, brought about by our behaviour. It's not saying much about our claim that we are an intelligent species is it. Well let's face the truth, we also say that the health and safety of our children is paramount, so paramount is there safety and welfare that we have over 4 million children living in poverty in the UK, we have baby and food banks popping up everywhere, we allow our females to have children and a full-time job , we allow them to have them at any age any number and bring them into any environment. So it's obvious isn't it, for if we can't protect our children from being born into poverty, then how on earth are we going to protect our environment. The answer to that question is in these videos. and in the policy you all cling to so enthusiastically one of endless growth in people on an island.
They spent so much money for flood denfenses since the 2015 flood and now this happens, I’m from Sowerby bridge close to mytholmroyd and it flooded there aswell
American here. Can anyone tell me if this is a rare thing in these parts of the world? Some of our states deal with this every year. What areas were affected? I hope everyone is doing ok out there.
Hi Mate. I live in Liverpool UK. To answer your question, These kind of weather patterns do happen every year and it's either with rain or snow. It only takes a good rain storm for most rivers to burst their banks and cause major flooding and damage. These kind of weather patterns are more prone to flood valley's etc. because the rain water will run down mountains and steep hills. It happens all over the country so not that rare. Terry.
@@cancerfour69er Lived in this valley all my life. I'm 37. Flooded for the first time in 2012, again in 2015 and again last week. To say something HASN'T changed is ignorant. This isn't just about where the houses are. Many of these houses being flooded are not new builds on flood plains. They're old stone terraced houses that have been standing since the late 1800s. Sure there would have been floods throughout those years but absolutely nothing like what we're seeing today, otherwise people would have stopped living here years ago.
Wow, All that money, time and traffic misery, it's almost as if there's some sort of restriction in the river bed. Call Mr Jagger and get him to put that big 360 machine of his in the river. Start at his yard in Luddenden Foot and work upsteam thro Brearley, past the playing fields and Moderna. Sweep the channel clean then keep it that way. Sowerby Bridge will have to do the same.
It's also that they keep ripping up trees and other green spaces which would lock in water to build houses on the floodplain, as opposed to using brownfield sites.
Aye up Father can we build house at Bottom of That Valley Near A River Aye Son we Can But we wont Son let the fools have that there bit of land near River Father smiles knowingly at His Kin..Son asks why Father replies Youll see my son youll see
As horrible as it is for the people here the obvious thing to me is how much of this is development on riverside flood plain and is always going to happen, The crooks who allow this with poor management and little understanding of their environment will quite happily stand behind any banner that saves their face and will unchecked decieve for profit again and again.
They've got to come up with better defences for these people's properties they've been flooded three or 4 times now and space of a couple of years and it's not on on the government needs to do something about it it they can't keep relying on their insurances some of these people don't even have insurance now because I can't afford it
And the government these people voted for are so helpful...they’re even building HS2 with the money that should be spent on flood defences.....never mind they’ll be able to get down to Harrods much quicker for some wellies.
There is no money set aside for HS2. The funding comes form government borrowing, which can only be done because HS2 has a positive economic cost to benefit analysis. This is the case with all mega-projects in the UK. Scrapping HS2 would not magically release £100bn for flood defences, or any other emotive worthy cause, the UK's finances just don't work like that.
Have you ever seen a village in full flood that didn't look dreary? This is the Pennines in Yorkshire with some of the most stunning scenery to be found in the UK. It seems flood defences are doing their job but more defences needed elsewhere as the water's not over-topping at that point.
Build a dam upstream.
Unfortunately this is how calderdale council manage floods......
@JAC they have destroyed all the independent local businesses by blocking the road.
Just looking @ google stret view - what a difference!

If this was in London the government would spend a fortune making sure it didn't happen again.
That's because the tax revenue from there is greater! How much tax would we have to pay as a small community to cover the cost?
