Hi, Hello.. Greetings !! Welcome to Raaga Metro.
The raga that we are going to see now in Raaga Metro is a heart wrenching raga - Charukesi.
Charu in Sanskrit means ‘beautiful’ and kesi means ‘hair’. So Charukesi means ‘beautiful hair’.
This is the 26th Melakara raga. It is called Tarangini in Muthuswami Dikshitar school of Carnatic music. There are only a few janya rāgams (derived scales) associated with Charukesi and they are not very popular.
Let us now see the arohanam - avarohanam of this raga.

In Classical music, this raga has not been used very extensively, there are only very few compositions. Saint Tyagaraja has given extensive recongnition to this raga in his Kriti ‘Adamodi galade’ which showcases all prayogas and phrases of Charukesi.
Also, ‘Karunai Varuumo’ kriti by Papanasam Sivan ; ‘Innu en manam’, a famous varnam by Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman, ‘Palayamam parameshwari’ by Muthuswami Dikshathar are a few famous compostions in Charukesi.
Though there are few classical compositions in Charukesi, when it comes to film music, this raga has been used very well across all eras. For example: ‘Manmadha leelaiyai vendraar’ , ‘vasantha mullai polae vandhu’ are old popular songs by Mr. G. Ramanathan, ‘aadal kalaiye’ - a very popular song by Illaiyaraja Sir from the movie ‘Sri Raghavendra’, more recent songs ‘Udhaya udhaya’ and ‘Uyire’ from the film ‘Bombay’, both composed by AR Rehman Sir, these are very well known songs to all and there are many more.
Not just in film music, but even in western music, strains of this raga can be heard in a composition named ‘Impromptu’ by Mr. Franz Schubert.
Let us now look into the emotions expressed through this raga. When it comes to
devotion, there is no raga that could match its level of eloquence and fineness. There are many compositions in Charukesi that showcases devotion beautifully.
Next to it, Sorrow, compassion, love are also the emotions that can be showcased through this raga. It is such a heart wrenching raga that it would even make the listeners to shed tears involuntarily.
Not just that, this raga, when heard, is also considered helpful in giving a soothing feeling to people with heart ailments. It has the power to enliven both the singer and the listener. This raga is suited to be sung at any time of the day.

One correction. Charu keshi means one with beautiful hair. Kesha means hair but keshi means one with hair. Difference is important
