  • Under the aegis of Rockbund Art Museum’s multi-year research initiative, Complex Geographies, the May screening series of AUUUUDITORIUM, The R.A.S. auditorium historically played a key role in cultural representation through its film screenings.
The "Female Knights-Errant" session will focus on two films from 1929 - Red Heroine and Woman Warrior White Rose. These films highlight the portrayal of female empowerment on the silver screen during the 1920s, offering a seemingly striking contrast to the male-dominated landscape of early Chinese cinema, particularly within the martial arts genre. Integrating the historical and cinematic contexts of that era, the lecture will use these films as a lens to examine concepts of "chivalry" and "progress" during the formative years of Chinese cinema. The session aims to juxtapose these themes with the era's prevailing cinematic concept of "shadow-play," reflecting on how these narratives were represented and perceived in the films of that time.
