Wow love the interview but the Force MDs are a part of the RnB hip hop conversation people seem to forget . Just saying
I agree
Force md's was more on that freestyle pop tip though .. they was making records with Lisa Lisa cult jam
@@BronxBastard730I think you’re talking about Full Force.
@whiteboyphilly4016 I just realized your right .. I was thinking of the wrong group. Force md's was from. Staten Island and Full Force was from Brooklyn .. mixed them up
They did it 1st!!
Bobby brown was rnb and hip hop merge first imo
Kris Kross 4 Ever
Guy & Bob Hip-Hop R&B was the prequel to BBD and Puff cemented-it
I LOVE Mike! Man I could sit and listen to him tell his stories ALL day!
He's always been my favorite
Mike got all the stories. I could listen to him spit all day.
Pause
@@themedinacrown7654😂😂😂
Super Pause
Ayo
Absolutely!!
Biv is always so cool and polished. He seems like he has maintained his sanity
even after 40+ years in such a crazy business. Keep going strong Bro.
I agree 💯‼️
Big up to Biv for shouting out Lil Redd and the rest of Another Bad Creation (ABC).
They don't get enough recognition for what they did to help blow up the ATL music scene.
I like Mike’s calm demeanor. Love him in New Edition, BBD and respect his business sense.
He fucked Boyz to Men ,Another Bad Creation, and BBD over..gave them all bad deals and did what was done to him to them..Pause
Shit he rich
That last section… BARS!!!
R.I.P. Mr. Avant🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Mike is a boss, born leader, I can listen to him every day lol
Word!!! I’m from NY and have family in Dorchester, Mass and I can listen to them talk allllllll day!!!😂😂 I know it sounds weird to say it
I'm going to keep it real: Biv didn't really have to explain nothing. It's nice of him to do so.
I said this about Drink Champs and I'm going to say this about Math Hoffa. Masta Ace needs to be a guest on these shows. He's one of the most underrated MCs ever and he doesn't get the respect and recognition he deserves.
Eminem is the only rapper I hear mentioning him still
@jojan715 Yup, he's one of his influences. Ed Lover briefly mentioned him when he was on a few days ago and GURU(R.I.P.) is the other MC I've seen mention his name and showed him respect.
Masta Ace had the best verse on The Symphony. A lot of people point to Kane or G. Rap because they were the most popular, but I think Ace had the best verse and Kane had the best line with "so put a quarter in a ya..." y'all know the rest.
Facts!!!
Nah….g rap verse was the hardest
Being that I was born in 1980… I can appreciate his SUPERB story telling!!!!!
Mike got some great stories.. glad to see he on a platform to express it to our people
I’m so glad Mike mentioned ABC. 👏🏾Loved them guys! They were the first artists from ATL that I can remember. Hoffa you should find all of them for an interview! And my homies from the Raq Subway 👏🏾💯
I liked them and Kriss Kross. I remember hearing JD's first group Sylk x Leather though.
The boys/ abc /quo like can't forget
Math Hoffa is killing it! Another interview🔥🔥🔥🔥
The drums on Poison slap till this day
Rest In Peace Chris Kelly
Wearing clothes backwards was an ATL thing. ABC had it first and when JD met Kriss Kross in the mall they were already rocking their clothes backwards.
Not true. I spoke to daddy mac 4 years ago and JD and left eye came up with the idea.
@@YoungRelay JD said himself that they already was wearing it backwards and it was an ATL thing.
@@YoungRelay you might be right. just looked up an interview with Kriss Kross and they said it was a meeting and JD suggested it. But JD got it from ABC who already was on fire.
Right! JD tells the story as if he created it
Mike got to be with "THE" powerhouses of the industry in his twenties no college could have prepared him for the knowledge he attained
💯
Mike said JD gonna give him that respect lol
BBD and TLC would've been an amazing collaboration.
No doubt... they should've made that happen. RIP to Left Eye.
Music peaked in the 90s because of innovation and substance
Early 2000s was great
Generation X had something to prove.
New Edition bridged the gap with hip hop long before BBD
Thank you. I was about to type the same thing. BIV is my guy, but I wish he would have corrected them when they said that. New Edition started the bridge first, then Bobby ran with that shit and took it to another level. A R&B Ni66a not just singing but rapping on R&B songs, no guest appearances neither. Bobby gave the baton to BBD and said it's your turn.
FACTS!
I'm guessing he meant they bridged the gap because of the outfits they would wear. But yeah, New Edition was definitely rapping and pop locking on the Candy Girl album.
Yo math this is gold right here. Y'all made me a fan based on the consistency bro salute
BBD (NE) in 1989-93 were trendsetters for us as teens and gen xers. They started us wearing Timberland boots, Carhartt brands, Starter shirts and jackets , Shearling and downs coats, and Airbrush jeans ..they merged and crossed the rap &r&b industry to the pop and mtv side in front the camera while nwa was being played only underground on walkmans in high schools back then in 1989-1992.BBD helped ‘gangsta rap’ get on mtv in the early 90’s. They were more ‘cross appeal’ as they stated in the song ‘ Do me ‘. The 1980’s Tiger Beat whites played with them all throughout NE careers. It assisted other African Americans nationally in the 1990’s. KrissKross ATL came later in 1992 ‘biting’ though needed and liked as well. This has been a gen gap service announcement . Thanks NEw Edition and BBD. Please continue to share your truth and historical content for our cultures for ages after.
Facts me and my crew in HS couldn't tell me we wasn't BBD😂
Rest in Power Clarence Avant always wanted to meet him
GUY Teddy Riley actually put the hip and rnb shit together.
Before them it was Full Force and Force MC's (Later Force MD's)
@@jarrellmason9080 Real Talk
No they didn't..cool it now (n.e.) came out in 83 .. confunkshun electric lady came out in 85.. Guy first record had no rap on it at all
Bell Biv Devoe and Bobby Briwn we’re innovators of a new style of R&B… just keepin it real
Along with the New Jack Swing Harlem based movement with Teddy Riley
@@djmack1nyNaw, you mean Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis...They were the first ones to really make New Jack Swing with Janet Jackson's Control album and I don't know why people don't acknowledge that..
@@FlyAwayChi preach! Super Facts
Yes Bob gotta be mentioned in that convo for merging hip hop and r&b
@@djmack1ny You sound crazy...Yeah they give that title to Teddy cause the media had already stamped Teddy as the creator. Jimmy Jam and Terry and Lewis are humble, you really expected them to say "Hell no, Teddy didn't start that shit, we did"??.. Teddy took that sound to another level but he is NOT the creator of it..And stop with the "Pop" shit.. POP is NOT a genre of music, it means popular... If an r&B record sells a lot of records it's gon go on the Pop charts, period. Snoop had the highest selling record of 1993, so was that Pop too? Hell no! ....Just listen to the sound of the Control album... Nasty, Control, What Have You Done For Me Lately, and Pleasure Principe are New Jack Swing records, period...Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis won Producer of The Year at the Grammys in 1987, you don't think a young ambitious Teddy Riley saw that and got inspired??? C'mon man
Biv10 a Legend, brought us boyz ll men, 702 and more. ✊🏾
Kriss kross - Don’t even try to compare us,
to Another Bad Little Fad, it’s the Mack
giving you something that you never had
Treach wrote that song, but I think JD jipped him on the publishing.
Don't forget Subway, they had that song,Hide and Seek, with 702
Dude is the best interview EVER
" What up to RALPH T. , and JHONNY G. , and can't forget about my boy B. BROWN AAHHAAHAA HAH" CLASSIC !!!!!!!!
Backwards & inside out shit was ALL BBD!!! These players changed R&B forever!!!
The first time I ever heard Kris Kross was at my school assembly. Jump came on and everybody went crazy. I was a fan ever since….Illegal was my shit too. The cassette tape was red. I’ll never forget.
They played it at my school assembly, too... and the crowd went wild. It wasn't the first time I heard it... I thought it was a cute song, but I was more into NWA, A Tribe Called Quest, Cypress Hill, Geto Boys and Kool G. Rap around that time... basically hardcore hip hop.
First time I heard it was at a junior high dance. Bro, I never seen that much excitement before for any song like "Jump". Saw the video a few days later and was hooked, backward clothes and all!
NOW THIS RIGHT HERE........IS THE DEFINITION OF KNOWLEDGE WISDOM AND UNDERSTANDING, TO THE FIRST DEGREE!!!! SHOUT OUT TO MIKE, MATH HOFFA AND THE CREW!!! FLOWERS TO THE LEGENDS; NEW EDITION!!!!! "RONNIE, BOBBIE RICKY AND MIKE, IF I LIKE A GIRL WHO CARES WHO YOU LIKE"
Remember, when DJ Jazzy Jeff did the commercial saying you can flip the hat, you can bend the hat?
Starter factory was in New Haven…Fair Haven I think. I used to go there to get jackets back in the day.
4:01 - 4:05
I'm glad he said this because I'm so sick fans pitting members of the group against each other and trying to keep decades long "rivalries" going, quotations because I think some fans take their rivalry more seriously than THEY did. New Edition is fucking VOLTRON. Each breakoff was dope but together it's a whole different monster. Never forget it.
That's Crazy how he mentioned Avant 🙏🏽
Yea that’s wild. #ClareneceAvant
ABC , Da Youngstaz, Illegal...I had all of those CDs...
Thank you Columbia House 😂😂😂
Yo shout out to Mike I met him and Johnny Gill at the Atlanta airport. I was dropping my wife and mother n law off and the got in line behind us Listen when people say you don't meet no strangers they spoke to me like what up Red I was like what up doe. No 🐂 at all. My wife was like wow you know them I was like yep been watching them all my life
This interview was awesome. He’s a great storyteller.
When you think back he's right about transitioning R&B artists to embrace the hip-hop fashion more. No singers were rockin pagers, jeans, boots or ball caps until BBD came out with Poison. When that song and music video dropped in 1990 that was it and it influenced a LOT of other music genres as well.
Yup, then Jodeci went hardcore with it with the tats, leather bombers, black baggy jeans and the Hi-Tech boots... Tupac said he was inspired to get tattoos after being on tour with Jodeci..
True! BBD broke ground with melding Hip Hop and R&B musically and visually! I always see people trying to give Jodeci credit for changing the look, but BBD was the first, the original template.
@@vfrebel6166 I didn't know they did the backwards clothing thing either and always assumed that was Kriss Kros. So this was a very insightful interview that corrects the record on a lot of things. Shout-out to Mike he's killing it
Mike is dope AF. Cool ass brotha work business swag
R.I.P. to the Black Godfather Clarence Avant 🙏🏾🕊️👑🙏🏾
BBD started ALL the trends in the 90's and 00's!!! Mike is so dope!!!!
I love how this show focuses on the History, and skills of the culture and not so much all the controversy, like them other shows
Me and Red from ABC just. Chopped it up yesteeday via text.....dude always been a solid cat ...

Listen when we were kids and everyone was picking who their husband was outta NE I always chose Mike Bivens it was something about his swag and that was before swag was a thing 🥰😍
Iesha Iesha so glad ta meet cha 💥
Mike Bivins is in the Eric B and Rakim video ( The Ghetto )
LL was writing them rhymes for them. I don’t know if he is going to mention it but you can look it up. 💯
Yeah if I remember right he wrote Mike's rhyme on the NE Heartbreak remix too
Much needed jewels and info here
BVD was the shit!🔥
Starter came from New Haven CT btw. 👌🏾
The girl that played Aiesha in the abc video was my neighbor.
Legendary!
mike bivs continue to drop dimes gems prescious jewels nice podcast Hoffa keep up the great content
If Another Bad Creation doesnt go Gold,, what reason would JD have had to even think Kris Kross could be a rap group?
That's hip hop, though. It's the king of the mountain mentality.
@@KtotheG even tho' ABC were kids,, they were still the 1st rap group from ATL to go Gold on a major label. they get omitted for that conversation
@@1RobertSmith They didn't write their own material. That's the #1 rule of hip hop MCing.. Self-representation. Write your own rhymes. No biting allowed... You had other kid rappers like LL Cool J, Lil Wayne, and Illegal who were respected because they wrote their own rhymes. ABC and Kriss Kross did not.
@@KtotheG is this this ruleeven applicable to kids? but the ones who did write their own rhymes like Illegal & Da Youngstas they had the least amount of success compared to the ones who didnt.
@@KtotheGActually, ABC did write two songs in their first album: A.B.C and Spyderman.
WE GOT TO STOP TELLING PEOPLE WE LOVE TO DEATH FOR NOW ON. SAY WE LOVE EM FOR LIFE MIKE BIV LOVE YA KING WHATS UP MATH.

Damn.. Mike dropped some heat on this one. RIP to the legend and my high school alumnus Clarence Avant. Thanks Math for doing it the right way.
'RONNIE .. BOBBY .. RICKY .. AND MIKE .. IF I LOVE THE GIRL .. WHO CARES WHO YOU LIKE' ..
BBD should be in the Top 10 50th hip-hop groups of all time they really set the TREND.💯💯
Dope show
Mike did this before puffy ..suge..Jd...all the young record label owners
Lil' Dave's verse on Playground inspired me to write my first rhyme at 12 or 13 years old.
Mike and Danny Boy....I could listen to them tell stories all day
I told niggaz BBD set the tone for the 90’s . All facts !! They trend setters .
Did he really just ask Mike if they did the reverse clothes thing before Kriss Kross? That’s like the 3rd wild question that I’ve heard this interview. These dudes really gotta do they homework on who it is that they’re interviewing. #GottaDoYourGoogles
I thought the same way. Did he just speak about kriss Kross ? They were whack in my opinion and a younger teen group coming up and had started in mid 1992. Atlanta was running behind schedule with the music .NE was men and had Fly style
@@imanij887 Yea exactly.

R.I.P. to Clarence Avant and Jheryl Busby. Mr. Avant " The Black Godfather" just died a couple of days ago and Mr. Busby passed on back in 2008. Legends in black entertainment and entertainment as a whole.
