the first part of the poppy war really resonated with me and even made me cry, because in brazil we also have a national exam that spans two days with 6 hour tests in each one, and that determines pretty much if you go to university or not. im 16, and if i dont pass that exam this year i might not go to college at all. it's an insane pressure, and the way rebecca portrayed it really hit home with me

    • @kb-ih7ni

In our country we don’t have any real standardized test for college but each university has its own entrance exam, so you need to take multiple exams in senior year. So yes in a different way, I felt the same thing as you did huhu it really brought back all my memories of pre-college life.
Good luck in your exams! Honestly I wish TPW existed in my senior year because I think I could have adopted Rin’s drive ((not her methods...just her drive lol) so I hope you pull put your inner Rin as well! But hey even if it doesn’t work out, there’s always a way to get where you want to be :)

This is a year late, but if you do decide to go ahead with your writing career, a suggestion... Don't get too bogged down with trying to directly translate the metaphors/proverbs. I grew up watching the 金庸 射鵰 stories, tried to read the official English translated books and it was so badly bogged down with direct translations it ruined the enjoyment for me (tried a bit of Ken Liu, present but not as bad). The 射鵰 ones even did that with names - 黄药师 became Apothecary Huang. Not sure why it was done that way, but the end result was bad.

5:45 I just want to say that those killing sports they did with infants really did happen in the Philippines during the Japanese Occupation. I've heard stories like that from my grandparents. Also the referring native women as "Public Toilet" was true. It made me cry when I read that part in the Poppy War. We really need more Asian Fantasy novels that mirror Asian history. It's horrifying, tragic, and still, there's a charm to it. Truly book-worthy.

Also the "Friendly Fire" over I Intramuros which resulted in Manila being the second most bombed city during WW2 after Poland. Like, we weren't even the epicenter of the war and yet the damage that "Justifiable Cause" has wrought can still be felt today. So many of those areas were planned to be shining developments in pushing the country forward but those understandably had to take a back seat to relief operations. Decades later, those areas are still struggling to make ends meet.

Went to an author signing in Glasgow where Kuang was interviewed by Jeanette Ng and it was absolutely fantastic! Hong Kong was just beginning it’s protests and Ng was from there/grew up there (can’t remember with) and their insights about how Chinese history was relevant to today were really interesting. Kuang’s passion for history and military tactics really stood out.
My favourite question someone asked was “so I’m a student like you. You’re writing your third book, doing your masters at Cambridge and doing an author tour. How do you manage your work/life balance?”

Not that big of a surprise. Horrible characters are often portrayed by people who are sweethearts in real life (ex. Margaret Hamilton, who played the Wicked Witch in Oz, was a lovely woman). I think having empathy for others makes you more capable of recognizing what hurts or scares them more.

Depends on what you like. I found it to be far too heavy in, I guess you could call it "historical intrigue"? There was a lot of discussion about what did or didn't happen in the past, who did or didn't do what, and why they did or didn't do this or that. And this all started happening near the beginning of the book before its relevance could really be established in other ways. That make it feel kind of like an info dump despite it being written very well and not like an info dump. If you like that kind of historical intrigue by itself, it would probably be fascinating though.

I enjoy all your interviews, but it was really refreshing to see a budding new author, who was open to talk about both being a female and Chinese author in a mostly white male driven fantasy author world. I think perhaps that is another reason why I found Evan Winter's interview as refreshing as well, I just love how both Evan and Rebecca have brought new cultures to a somewhat stagnant fantasy genre focused on medieval or fantastical realms that are not so different to the norm or western societies today.

Yeah she seems really passionate about history and is really trying to find a way to present it to a wider audience, along with portraying it in a way that would make her family proud of the fanasty books she wrote.
In some way I think it's a great opportunity for West to Understand Eastern history.
I too studied history and ancient civilisation at university. But you know what it was always from a western perspective or from those who won, which was usually elite white males. It took me a long time as a history major to rid myself of all I had been taught, and to study those on the other side or who weren't written about. The so called forgotten peoples of history. That is why I focused on archaeology so I could study those who were either left out of or removed from the history books, material culture to find out who the really where and what was important in their lives.
Plus Rebecca really seems like a very genuine person. I feel like as as a history major I kinda think similarly to her about the consequences of war and those who it affects in varying ways.
Great interview btw Dan, just the right amount of questions and listening as well also to knotch. Author tangents are sometimes great to hear because they give of great advice for aspiring and also budding new authors who want get their books out to the public.

Hallucinogens is a weighted and biased word. Psychedelics is a better use of language, as it is a word that doesn't diminish the profound awareness and reality of the experiences accessed via plant medicine. In the West, we suffer under the yoke of a reductionistic and simplistic paradigm that ignores the spirit of things for the sake of a dead, mechanistic interpretation of the world.

I'm reading the Poppy War right now. Honestly, I had a hard time getting through the first 80 pages, and ALMOST DNF'd it. The narrator voice didn't resonate with me at all, at first. I found myself thinking "it sounds like a college girl wrote this". I don't know if she changed mindset during writing, but I noticed a really drastic improvement/progression in the quality of the narrator voice around page 100. From that point on, it's gotten better and better. I'm about 3/4 of the way through the book now, and I'm surprised at how much I've liked it, based on how disappointed I was at first. I haven't had that experience from anything I've read before. So my suggestion, if anyone wants to read this, DO NOT give up on the book early. It gets much, much better. I think this is an important book, because we very little fantasy on the market based in a far-eastern setting.

"mistake her book for another" ---> Did he, though? Yes, he called the book by the wrong name. It seems to me that this is something that can happen very easily, when you have many things to juggle at the same time to produce a good interview, and judging by her refraining from correcting him, I could imagine that Rebecca interpreted it like "he said the wrong words, but he meant the right thing" as well.

@@tsentenari4353 Yeeeaahh, but as someone who's interviewing another person on a project or subject that took a huge amount of effort and time to do, and making those mistakes is very rude in the professional world. DVid is a very sweet guy and probably wailed at the ceiling at how dumb he was, but it still doesn't take away the fact that he didn't do enough research or fact check enough to do a flawless interview with her. Which is where the rude part comes in, regardless of what you just mentioned. :/

@@tsentenari4353 Regardless of why it happened, he did in fact call her book by the wrong name, right after calling HER by the wrong name. It's by no means Daniel's fault, but imagine yourself in her position. You're doing an interview and your interviewer makes 2 mistakes about you in the first minute. That's not a good first impression and it's not incredibly professional. Overall I think Daniel is a good interviewer but he does make mistakes and these were pretty bad mistakes imo.

Okay, right off the bat: I can't emphasize enough how much I appreciate that she is openly talking about being influenced by Orson Scott Card.
I think it is quite obvious from the way she addresses certain topics and uses certain words that she has the lingo of someone who is politically in the progressive-left, and there is a tendency in that crowd to 'cancel' art if its creator doesn't fit a certain political standard. I think it is pretty darn cool that she openly acknowledges Card's influence on her writing (which probably she'll get flak for from some peers). This is not me saying Card's political rants aren't stupid, this is me appreciating someone who not only has a differentiated opinion but is also willing to voice it in our crazy world of hyperbole and hysteria.

Rebecca is AWESOME!! I have a bachelor's in history and I decided I want to write with my degree and the Poppy War was the most inspiring work of fantasy that I've ever read. I want to use fantasy to educate people by allowing them to more easily digest and comprehend actual events. Her representation of the Rape of Nanking and the bombing raids and nuclear drops on Japan were absolutely incredible! I loved this book and at the end I was legitimately exhausted from reading her portrayal of the events in the best way possible. Understanding that this actually happened, albeit through technology rather than channeling gods, but then again is there even a difference? Damn it's so good!
