i started lifting at 53 ... went against grain on most everything online ... have had great results ... people ask if i am juicing ... have worked out same bodypart multiple days in row ... have worked out 7 days a week ... did a whole year of 6-8 rep range ... killed it on growth ... everything works ... but you have to stop thinking it will happen in a few months ... it is 3 steady consistent years now ... still have tons of growth available on legs ... so ... focusing on legs now ... everyone can buiid a killer physique ... be willing to put in the time

I was a teacher for almost ten years. One thing I learned is that sometimes pointless questions are more about the interaction than the answer. A student once came up to me after class and asked, “uhh, do you like music?” She of course just wanted to tell someone about all the music she liked. I agree people need to think for themselves and need to be taught to think for themselves, but sometimes it isn’t about the answer-sometimes we just want that Big Mike like 😂

So, what did I learn from Mike after 46 years of hard core (mostly free weight) training ? Gironda used the term "over tonus' . To many reps. To many sets. Mike often says; you have to "open up". Another thing is taking the pressure off muscles other than the muscle you train. Machine training as third. Especial for guys like me who consider (lol) free weight the way to go. At 66 year now, I'll start with a basic movement these days and finish with machines. A learning process. Why still use squats etc? Because I need the challenge. I do not have that 'feeling' with machines. However, one has to accept the fact that there is no mystical exercise that can make a muscle 'grow'. Coming back to Vince Gironda, He had this superset ; 6 reps on the Scott bench immediately followed by six reps standing barbell curls with the same weight. 6 super sets. One inch on your arms, more or less, guaranteed. Over the years I tried most of those claims. To my observation, as a natural bodybuilder, you have what I call 'grow spurts' With around three being the limit. Genetics always come first.

Been doing my workouts now based on feel in the gym. Haven’t really counted sets or reps just felt the muscle work until I got a nice pump and burn. Feels so much better than a strict regimen or specified number of sets and reps. Working wonders. Thx for the info and being down to earth. Very refreshing nowadays with the arrogance of some people out there.

  • @BlackDillon

Man it warms my soul to see all these 40+ guys getting their mojo back for lifting thanks to Mike. I'm one of them. And can openly admit I became zombie like for a while, following some personalities because it promised great results or strength or whatever other shit. Also got sucked into the "oh you NEED to do this exercise to develop". Now I just do what I want, and I'm a million times happier for it (haven't bench pressed for years), and genuinely feel I'm understanding and developing my own body better than ever thanks to info like Mike puts out for free.
On a side note, I feel the real trouble today in the influencer community is the lies - the amount of people claiming results in however many days, when reality is it takes time... or non-natty people claiming natty and saying look at my results I got, so you're like "oh wow they look great lemme try that". All for the sake of selling you some generic supplement or bullshit programme they copied from someone else anyway.

Hi Mike, ive incorporated some of your movements into my training and some of them are absolutely working for me. Im very limited equipment wise where i train so im used to thinking around movements to get them to work, so i couldnt just copy your stuff verbatim even if i wanted to. Honestly though dude i just want to give you a massive thank you because the biggest influence youve had is getting me thinking about movement and connecting with muscle again, after years in a rut of just going and doing the same exercises in the same way week after week. So thanks dude its appreciated massively 👍

I called it "Paralyzed in indecision" when you just shut down from overload. Just a thought, but it does seem like folks now just want the quick fix, the easiest supplement, the pills or surgery or whatever and no one wants to put in the time. That's what it boils down to: time. Spend some time in the gym. Go one day for a few hours just to practice with absurdly light weights and just practice the movements, focus on the connection and just repeat to yourself, "Consistency over time". Great vids man, keep them coming please.

I think what you're saying makes perfect sense, but I also think people see a particular Bodybuilder and their line of questioning is always "tell me what YOU do so I can look like YOU". They think that if they replicate your gym routine that they will have a body like yours. But like you say, everyone is different with varying lifestyles, genetics and desires.

I love Mike’s content. I guess 3:40-3:50 confuses me. I’m 26 and I come from a long football background growing up in Texas. I am natural and I train bc I enjoy it and I enjoy the stimulation I get from it. I have no intentions on competing and I’m not at all against steroids. Plan on using in my 30’s but I want to see how far I get naturally. I guess my question is “are you saying you don’t understand the point of training naturally if your going to compete?” Or “you don’t understand why you would train naturally at all?” Thanks Mike 💯

I don’t understand either. But that’s me. U do u ryland. U have your reasons for doing what u do. I have mine for doing what I’m doing. U will really enjoy my training style in your 30’s. Remember I said that 😉

Mike you are right on point there are so many ways to skin a cat and I think in the fitness world it is the same. I have enjoyed your videos and others to take new and different perspectives on lifting. I enjoy your attitude of my way is not the only way to hit your goals. Keep it up!!

I'm going thru the exact same thing..I've been doing reverse grip bent over rows with an ez bar BUT with my forehead on an incline bench in front of me ...Bracing your head helps take the strain off of your lower back big time...Make sure you fold a towel up to put on the end of the bench to cushion your head...

Mike said it best, you need to find a couple people you trust put out good information and mold it into something that works best for you. Maybe it's taking a movement from someone else and applying Mike's style to it. We're in the gym hitting the same muscles every week, it won't kill you to play around to see how certain things feel and how your body responds. I'll never understand the people who mindlessly follow just 1 person's way of training.

The best part of the training is discovering angles and connecting to
      The lift.
