Whenever I pick this collection up, I never go back to this one-- I had a bad experience at university when coming across it many years ago. But I think I have healed, and may have to go back to it tonight. "Use the Small of the person to represent the Big of the country." What a fantastic way to word that---I think I have found my favorite way to sum up a lot of the literature of this time haha😅

I need to get started on this collection and chime back in on these past videos with my opinions and interpretations. I feel like it’s one I’ll enjoy because I’ve always enjoyed watching each of the discussions through the journey through the book so far. Thanks for including the historical background of the time because hopefully I’ll remember that info when I get started and have a better understanding of what I’m reading. Hopefully. 😂

Krypto's analysis seems based on his idea that Jimmy is a little 'behind' the other young men in his understanding of upper class life, and that he even helped at the butcher's shop. In the story he is a little bit a fop who, "did not study very earnestly and took to bad courses," dresses the part, and wastes his father's money -- more due to drunkenness and peer pressure than bad habits.
Jimmy may rank lower due to his father's background and his Irishness, but he's not so grounded.
I think it's interesting that we have the paragraph about Jimmy's general carefulness and respect for his father's money. I also think it's interesting his father approves of him occasionally wasting it and of the social circle he wastes it in. In classic _Dubliners_ fashion, we're kept from the conclusion of these things changing, or any word on if they do.
This is a beautiful story. It’s a shame it’s written off as a time-period allegory. You did a great job of discussing it!

Villona is happy with his lunch-compared to the others who are always searching. He is at least for the moment content. Others are searching for Kierkegaardian "this or that" and never really finding that sweet spot, chasing wealth, religion, women, ways to avoid, and the fantasy is better than the reality so far in Joyce's stories and the devil you know is better than moving forward. What is winning? As in real life, it is a valid question for those who are questioning.

I see Jimmy being representative of all of Ireland, and at the same time he also represents a bit of Joyce as well.
Brian mentioned a similar thing about auto fictional element.
Villona, the Hungarian. What is his signficance? Why is there a Hungarian in this story?
Presumably to represent Hungary. Their economy was a bit lower compared to Britain and others that were quicker to adapt at the time
I always thought this story was kind of autobiographical - jimmy Doyle = Jimmy Joyce - and both Jimmy’s were kind of middle class and felt a bit like imposters perhaps, impotent, and forced to play a game he can’t win.
