I'm 36 and I listen to this music all the time. My mom was 63 when she passed last Xmas and raised me on this. Stephanie Mills, Chaka Khan, Tammi Terrell.
I remember the pre Woodstock lawn party on the national mall back in 68'. The redd sisters opened the concert with this and set the place on fire. Man what a time! 😂😂

The Redd Sisters were an R&B/Soul group from Philadelphia, PA that was active from 1963-1972. The group consisted of sisters Lashonda, Jamesetta, and Henrietta Redd. Originally starting out as back up singers for local Philadelphia groups recording under the label Philadelphia International, the Redd sisters started their own group in 1968. Lashonda, the oldest sister, wrote most of the groups material. She would often compose her arrangements under massive consumption of alcohol; particularly beer and whiskey. Jamesetta would handle lead vocals with a 4 octave range. Henrietta, a classically trained pianist would arrange the melodies. The Philadelphia house band, Mother Father Sister Brother (MFSB), were used on all their albums. Their first album, Roses are Redd and Violets are Blue, was released in 1969. It charted 69 on the billboard hot 100 and 5th in the R&B/Soul category. The writing credits for every track were credited to Lashonda Redd with the exception of Pound Town which credited all 3 sisters. In 1971 their breakthrough album, Sexy Redd, gained critical acclaim by the majority of critics and spawned their first and only Billboard 100 and Billboard R&B/Soul #1 hit Rich Baby Daddy. Despite writing credits going solely to Lashonda Redd, Jamesetta Redd claims she exclusively wrote the lyrics. Even though the album proved hugely successful, the sisters would shortly after disband. Henrietta Redd was murdered in 1973 by her child's father after an argument regarding male spousal support. Her husband demanded money and then shot her in a drug induced rage. He was later apprehended by authorities with stolen cash and jewelry. He is currently serving a life sentence in the Michigan Correctional Facility. Upon hearing of her younger sister's death Lashonda Redd fell into an even deeper drinking abyss. She died of alcohol poisoning 7 months after Henrietta was murdered. Jamesetta, torn by the loss of two sisters, would leave Philadelphia and start a solo career in Detroit, Michigan. Her first album, At Last, was released in 1976. It spawned 3 top ten billboard 100 singles and four other top 50 singles in the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. Jamesetta currently survives her two eldest sisters and resides in Petersburg, Virginia as a piano and vocal instructor. She is 83 years old.
Thanks for this. Its so hard to find info about these amazing pioneers. At their time, they were wildly popular among younger audiences, but after the tragedy with Henrietta (I recall a Behind the Music that touched on it and the subsequent fallout) it was over. People have no idea how groundbreaking “Roses are Redd…” was when it first hit the scene. A particular favorite or mine was “Roses are Red, I am Blue”, and can’t forget about “Shake Yo Dreads”, which was a stunning call to Rastafarians and actually deeply inspired the likes of Bob Marley, likely laying the groundwork for his more universally loved albums.
