@@susankirkland3852 It has a very very long history, started as Jack Hall early eighteenth century, evolved to Sam Hall mid nineteenth century and so on . Well worth looking up the history of the song as "Sam Hall Chimney Sweep" so as not to confuse with Johnny Cash song of similar name. ☘️🙏👍
This is a song called Jack Hall. It’s an English folk song about a Highwayman and dates from the early 1700s. Fantastic version, thank you for sharing and of course Jeff Beck RIP
Ooi I discovered Jack Hall played by Sam Carter on Later... With Jools Holland some years ago on the BBC, which I can’t find at present. However, here’s a recent performance by Sam for anyone interested. It’s fascinating how these old songs are re-interpreted in such different ways! ua-cam.com/video/7sItmXs2cFY/v-deo.html
@@watfordkev Thanks for that link I enjoyed that version best so far and could hear the words / story much clearer. I couldn’t work out from Eric’s recording. Cheers
Very nice rendition of this ballade and a fitting tribute to the greatest electric guitar-player since Jimi Hendrix! This is what 's called to pass things on through song by one of the greatest troubadours still alive.....!
I spoke to Jeff in 2001 after a gig in Amsterdam and asked him who is the greatest electric guitar player ever and he said without hesitation ,Jimi Hendrix ofcourse .... Then i said but at this moment ,and he pointed to himself and put on a cheeky smile.... So i'm sure he doesn't mind me saying that......! No offence intended mate....!

@@keikom7881 Ok,so the song is called Sam Hall, written in 1707 about a crimainal-google Sam Hall folk song and there is a wiki page and other stuff.I am English and not a folk song fan, definetely a Beck fan tho!,but the arrangement has an Irish sound to it and Beck did some interpretations of Irish stuff, probably why Clapton chose it.Hope this helps!
They were friends. No doubt there are personal reasons, that we will not fully appreciate, for the choice of song here. I’m sure that Eric knew Jeff’s music probably better than us and that the choice of song here is appropriate from one friend to another.
Jeff did not alway “rock out” as you misleadingly stated. During his 2014 tour he played “Danny Boy”. An old Irish folk song played in pubs at closing time and, more importantly, at funerals.
@@dadgad0 You're probably right. I just didn't really like Eric's performance and song choice. I've followed Jeff's whole career and have seen him many times. The memories I want to keep of Jeff are either from Blow-Up where's he's destroying his guitar or when he's playing a white strat with Tal or Imogen or Vinnie or Imelda and it's loud with feedback and whammy bar and harmonics.
@@Notes-From-Underground66 I know Jeff's music pretty well, I've seen him a dozen times and followed his whole career. I know the tune "Danny Boy" but I like "Greensleeves" better that he did on his first album better for that type of tune. My best friend is Irish so I get it. Really lovely tribute to Jeff from his good friend Eric… a lot of emotion in his vocals here.

This is the first time that I've heard Clapton play Celtic music but it's fitting because it is the soul music of Britain.
Do you know the name of the song by any chance. I know I’ve heard it before and it’s driving me nuts. Very beautiful
Oh it’s called Jack Hall… I see someone on this thread named it 👍

I just checked it out and I think Jack Hall - Longford Row (2011) is the version I’ve heard before

Richard Thompson did a song called Sam Hall on his wonderful 1000 Years of Popular Music album which is a variation on this. Isn't Eric singing Sam?

Irish I think-somebody said a Celtic song-definetely sounds that way especially at the end,its not English pretty sure of that.
