  • Ken Saro-Wiwa was a Nigerian activist and a martyr, a brave and inspiring campaigner who led his Ogoni people's struggle against the decades-long defilement of their land by oil companies. Unfortunately, he ended up paying for it with his life. Today, the struggle still goes on and the legacy of Ken Saro-Wiwa lives on.

Each time I watch this it reminds me of the legacy of good people lives for ever. Today Abacha is gone, Ken is gone, but Ken is remembered for good deeds, Abacha for wickedness and evil.

He put Ogoniland "on the map," the man says...Why ? because he was such a superlative writer, that is the sentence after sentence. perfect. (His daughter Noo is damn good too). I found his book I think in the British Council library in Dar es Salaam, in 2000, is where I discovered Ken Saro-Wiwa. from the USA. thank you.

The unjust killing of Saro-wiwa still represents a scar on the conscience of the nation called Nigeria.
What saro-wiwa stands for remains at the core of the problems of the Nigerian state. It remains an unresolved and unaddressed direct indictment against Nigeria. Nigeria can therefore not find rest until there is justice for Saro-Wiwa.

I wonder if we can still have this kind of selfless leader in our world today. I heard about Ken since early 90's, but sincerely untill his death I never knew how powerful he was. I'm proud to be an Ogoni. The struggles of Ken has only embolded me. U can kill a messenger but u can't kill the message. For me, living life means nothing if that life cannot be sacrificed for an idea that one holds so dearly. I love my people and I'm happy Ken has given me a voice.... One day, justice will reign in our land!

This just shook a sad and powerful reminder of how the colonial powers would use agents of one African ethnicity against another to achieve their goal of manipulation as during the slave trades. Seeing this for the first time, and seeing the struggles for Ken Saro-Wiwa's struggle for his people, the Ogoni people just showed the magnitude of a man he was to stand up for the rights of his people and in essence an example to others facing such dire straits to do the same in respect to their own concerns.

Indeed a true son of Africa and great Nigerian patriot.May his legacy inspire more NIgerians to fight for freedom of speech and equity.Fondly remembered and idolized in India through Ken Sarowiwa Hall near ISBT in New Delhi in 1993.The Hall hosted an international seminar on language and nationalism which i was privileged to attend alongside famous Kenyan writer Ngungi wa Thiong'o with whom we shared lunch reminscing on "Decolonising the mind".That was the period when gatherings of more than three people could earn you the brand of a traitor and a prison term.Peace and blessings to the Ogonis and others who find themselves in such injust social and economic situations.

KEN SARO WIWA could not believe what happened to him.
    Lesson:
DO NOT SABOTAGE YOUR OWN PEOPLE'S EFFORTS TOWARDS THEIR LIBERATION.
He never, in his wildest dreams, believed Abacha would confirm his death sentence!
From Oputa panel's revelations, on the day of his execution, he was unable to face his fate with fortitude because he believed that his sentence would be commutted by his BEST FRIEND, SANI ABACHA.
When they came for him, he kept on asking if Abacha was aware?
He Resisted being led to the execution point, kept on protesting for time as he expected reprieve would come at the 11th hour.
To calm him, he was shown the execution order signed by Abacha, but he frantically denounced it as fake, demanding audience with Abacha immediately.
The officer commanding the squad, a junior officer told him, the only report his superiors would listen to would be report of his death and nothing else.
Wiwa reverted to telling his killers how close he was to Abacha; the afternoons they spent playing tennis at 2nd Artillery brigade in Port Harcourt in the 70s, the nice evenings they used to have. That during the Ogoni protests, based on their old times as friends and best buddies, he had expected Abacha to have called him and asked him the least Ogoni would have accepted.
Wiwa pleaded and pleaded for his life to be spared. His pleas fell on deaf ears.
"Oh God", he screamed, let my pleas work. His eyes were greasy with welling tears.
Why should today be his last day on earth?
What crimes did he commit? That he asked for his people to have a share of the wealth that comes from their land? The land that no longer supports farming or fishing because of pollution from oil spillage.
He mistook the officer's dark reflections for contemplations of pity!
Any independent observer would conclude that Saro Wiwa deserved pity and more. He had worked for it. His efforts during the civil war shortened its duration and saved thousands of Nigerian soldiers' lives.
You see, while Biafran soldiers blocked Omanelu and Isiokpo axis through Elele Junction, Saro Wiwa was able to organise guides who guided the Nigerian soldiers to infiltrate through Etche, Alulu, link up to Ihiagwa and Nekede, connect Obosima and cut-off Biafran soldiers who had successfully blocked the 3rd Marine Commandos Advance led by Black Scorpion, Benjamin Adekunle.
Wiwa was rewarded with appointment as the Civilian Administrator of the port city of Bonny.
And it was really this bit of history that was the bone of contention.
He rightly or wrongly believed he had equal stake in the territory called Nigeria, having staked his life and helped in defeating those who were neigbours to him - the Igbos.
So, the shares of spoils of war, for which oil was the paramount spoil, should be extended to his people, because, without their efforts, it would have been impossible to subdue Biafra in the battle field.
Remember that the 3rd Marine Commandos were eventually routed from Owerri, just before the end of the war, wherein Black Scorpion among the few to escape, had to escape dressed as a woman, for which he was court- marshalled and dishonourably discharged. Benjamin Adekunle, the Black scorpion, died a pauper, neglected by the federal side he fought for.
On the other hand, Wiwa's erstwhile partners in conquest/crime, Fulanis, believed they had more than adequately rewarded him by making him an administrator of the city of Bonny and also making him a commissioner in Rivers State.
So he should keep off the oil, whether it was drilled from his village or not.
Posterity would judge who was right between him and those Abacha represented. For me as a scholar, I believe his requests or demands were quite in order.
Eye wey see deal, dey follow share. The child who pounded the pepper is entitled to a share.
Wiwa's fate had been decided the day he asked about the oil.
The recipients of the message were people from the oil-producing communities. None would dare ask questions about "our oil" after Ken Saro Wiwa's execution.
At that point, the captain gave his orders and he was lifted up, struggling and protesting till he was tied up and killed.
When the question of the whereabouts of Wiwa's body was raised at the Oputa panel, one of the soldiers giving evidence reported that it was completely dissolved in acid.
☝🏾This is an intelligent narrative beautifully written.
But I should add that Mr Saro-Wiwa - like Adaka Boro, and many other "Niger Delta" youths who would betray their new republic - had studied at secondary schools and university on old Eastern Nigeria scholarship.
It should also be noted that because of Saro-Wiwa's betrayal, he was also rewarded with countless number of "ABANDONED PROPERTIES", including some previously belonging to Chief John Anyaehie (late father of Barr Nnamdi Anyaehie), CoS to Governor Uzodinma).
Late Sani Abacha and late Saro-Wiwa onced lived together in one of the ABANDONED PROPERTIES he had seized FROM IGBOS..
Ken Saro Wiwa's Son, Ken Jnr, also died very young. He died suddenly in London on 18 October 2016, aged 47, after suffering a stroke.
Another son, who had mental health issues, died last year, 2020, of Covid.
Finally, recall that, before Saro-Wiwa's arrest, he had run to the SAME Enugu and the SAME Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, whom he had betrayed, to ask for Igbo intervention in his murder case. It was then that Ojukwu sarcastically uttered that immortal word "Okokorokoooo" (Cock crowing in the morning - Good morning) - to the frightened Ogoni man.
The meeting that Saro-Wiwa attended was at Hotel Presidential Enugu, built by Michael Okpara who had given Saro-Wiwa scholarship to study at Government College Umuahia - and also betrayed by Saro-Wiwa!

Reading the scriptures, the prophets and several of God's messengers including JESUS were killed and so do we also have in our contemporaneous society. I don't think the Ogoni people have any problem deifying a great Ogoni man like Ken Saro Wiwa but they will definitely have serious problems glorifying a betrayal like Odumegwu Ojuku. My question is what is the difference btw the sacrifices made by Ken Saro Wiwa and the sacrifices by Jesus Christ of Nazareth that's read about in the Bible?

This is really painful. I wonder how his family especially his children have managed to live through the pain of how a lesser man in relation to the quality of the human spirit executed a quality human being like their dad. The pursuit of justice can be very expensive. May his rich soul continue to live in peace.

  • @kinneebo5374

Ken Saro Wiwa story is a story of a great man with great will. The fact remains that Ken was murdered by multinational oil companies particularly Royal Dutch Shell. These companies instigated the Ogoni crisis and engineered the execution of Ken and other innocent Ogonis. Shell needs to take responsibilities for the Ogoni crisis, because the company and its partners were responsible for what's happening to the Ogoni people including the destructions and killings in Ogoni villages during that period. The Hausa-Fulanis, Yorubas, and Igbos in charge of the so called federal govt of Nigeria were apprehensive and freaked out about the stoppage of oil and the implications for the petrodollars that's fueling Nigeria's gross corruption, but careless about the destructions cause by oil drilling in Ogoniland.
Ken knew he was going to be killed but he made the decision to fight these giants like those multinationals that operates in the Niger Delta and the Nigeria government. Even when it was obvious that he was going to be killed, Ken still refused to botch or run away just like Odumegwu Ojuku did during the Igbo Biafra War. Here is what many people didn't know about the rush to execute Ken. The rush to execute Ken before the 30 days clemency period elapses was triggered by one Igbo man name Emeka Anyaoku, who was then the Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations. This Emeka Anyaoku advised Abacha that if Ken was not executed immediately that it would be difficult to carried out the execution after the Commonwealth of Nations convened and reconvened. Like Abacha, this Anyaoku is an evil man and he’s going to rotten in hell. The good thing was that Ken completed his work before he was murdered, he's now looking down from heaven. May his soul rest in peace!!

Ken Saro-Wiwa is not the angel that some of you like to make of him. Ken Saro-wiwa preyed, promoted and profited from the death of the Igbos. Ken Saro Wiwa in collaboration with the wicked Nigerian government confiscated the properties of hard working Igbos and made it their own in the name of "abandoned property". Stop deifying this benefactor of genocide.

    • @kinneebo5374
      @kinneebo5374 3 роки тому

@@donatta1857 Ken Saro Wiwa and the Ogoni people had nothing to do with your so called abandoned properties, the Ogonis activities were mainly to defend themselves against the onslaughts from all side. I don't think the Ogoni people have any problem deifying a great man like Ken Saro Wiwa but they will definitely have serious problems glorifying a betrayal like Odumegwu Ojuku. My question is what are the difference btw the sacrifices made by Ken Saro Wiwa and the sacrifices by Jesus Christ of Nazareth that are read about in the Bible?

IPOB is alive now to correct the wrong of many years. How I wish the Ogonis will join the struggle for liberation. No one should sit on defence in this struggle for together we will win.

Ken Saro-Wiwa saved his people. Very few stands up to the might of their government and that of West companies. It's frustrating and disheartening to see people living in such dangerous conditions and looking at their rivers contaminated to the core by oil. coming from those served pipes. The Nigerian government neglected the Ogoni people for years earning money from Shell oil companies at their expense. It's a pity Ken had to pay with his life to later get attention. At least Ogoni people are now recognised in their own Motherland Nigeria. Thanks to him and those who embraced and supported the struggles.😢😢 Long live Ken Saro-Wiwa!❤
