    The wind was REALLY BAD during filming, even with an external mic and windscreen. I took most of the wind noise out in post, but that also muted the recording in a few areas. You will likely want to have CC on during playback. Thank you.

    This is becoming my go-to channel for flashlight reviews. Seeing actual use testing in the field is super useful, so thanks very much for your efforts.

    Nice review, Jim! Came back to watch this after checking your P18/17 comparison.
    I was thinking I'd trade my L19 2.0 + Fenix PD36 TAC setup for a P18 by itself (+headlamp, obv.). My problem is that effectiveness gap between the two. Now thinking I'll keep the L19 (it's just so damn good lol), but trade the PD36 for a TK20R V2 or a P17.
    Both are the best either of those OEMs have done yet. That said, I think the P17's emitter (runtimes & output) outdoes the TK's SST70 that I'm not a huge fan of in the PD, even with the neat USB charging port.

      The L19 V2 has made it to the permanent left-shoulder light on my basic SAR load out. It's performed extremely well in extreme cold and heat (by TX standards) and I put it through 2 1/2 hours of continuous rain exposure. I'll probably film another rain exposure test of it in the near future. Thanks.

    Thank you for the review. I'm trying to decide between this light and the Fenix TK20R v2.0. I'm excited to see your tactical review of the P17.
    It would be nice to see how the p17 and tk20 compare in terms of light colour and which one is better for penetration into the woods for identification.

      @L5-SAR  Рік тому

      I may do a comparison review in the future. The TK 20R V2 has a very aggressive step-down in Turbo. The P17 held a higher output level for a longer time. A lot depends on the distance involved as well as what distances can you actually make an identification. For me, it's about 150 yards tops with good atmospheric conditions and without a magnified optic. For longer than that and with the possible use of a magnified optic, I'd consider the P18 or a real long-throw light. Thank you.

    Great video! You know not having the battery capacity indicator like my Fenix or Olight lights is the only downside to this light. Otherwise, I love my P-17.

    I believe that the P18 has greater throw and may be better for heat as it seems to have more thermal mass in the head (although I am guessing). Thanks for the review.

      P18 is not pocketble, but I agree with you

    • @L5-SAR
      @L5-SAR  Рік тому +1

      The P18 has nearly twice the peak candela at the top end, so it is more of a thrower. I hope to get my hands on one and provide both a full review and comparison with the P17. Thanks.

    Great video, would you suggest this over the tk16v2 for all around tactical use

    • @L5-SAR
      @L5-SAR  9 місяців тому +1

      Excellent question. The technology curve always moves onward, so what I use at one time is often different 9-12 months later. At present, I'm using the P17/P18 as a helmet mounted light. The form factor is larger than the TK16 V2, but higher lumen output and peak candela will likely make up for that for most people. I have not taken the TK16 V2 out in about a year. Thank you.

    How do you compare the P17 with the Nitecore p23i? Which would you choose, please?

    • @L5-SAR
      @L5-SAR  Рік тому +1

      Two different types of light. I'll try to do a comparison video in the near future. Selection of one or the other would be based on mission specifics. In some cases, I might prefer the P18 over both of them. In general, it depends on terrain and expected line of sight. Also, am I doing a tracking search or a targeted area search? Big difference. With a lot of tree lines and greater line of sight, I'd look at the P23i and P18. With lesser line of sight, I like that larger hotspot. As line of sight decreases and width of search area increases, I want a more floody light. Thank you.

      @@L5-SAR thanks for your comprehensive answer.
      I got a P17 and I miss a little more throwing, the hotspot os too big, as you said. But for medium distances and open area is amazing, great runtime at turbo and high.

      @L5-SAR  Рік тому

      @@matheusmf4135 I just posted the review of the P18 - probably the thrower you're looking for. I have filmed a P17 vs. P18 comparison, but it probably will not be on the channel until this weekend or early next week. Thanks and good luck to you.

    Sir, which do you think is better for tactical use, nitecore p23i or acebeam p17?

    • @L5-SAR
      @L5-SAR  Рік тому

      You ask extremely good questions! If you put the Acebeam in Tactical Mode1, it's similar to the P23i in Daily mode. The P23i has a more penetrating beam, which is helpful in Urban tactical ops in the presence of photonic barriers. For wilderness use, it can be helpful for looking through gaps in trees and inside tree lines in winter. The Acebeam has a wider hotspot which increases peripheral situational awareness inside the ranges that most 'tactical' situations occur. Honestly, you could go with either one and have a really good light. For those in law enforcement and private security, the accessories available for the P23i may also be a deciding factor. Thank you.

    Have you tested the Acebeam L35? And what light do you think will be more interesting than p17 or l35. I choose between them. The plus of the 35 for me is also the equipment: it is a case, the presence of a tactical ring, a spare button and the size of the head of the flashlight. 17 has 3 modes and control at the end. There is no way to evaluate the light of these lanterns in person. Therefore, I would like to hear your professional opinion.

    • @L5-SAR

      No, I have not. If Acebeam sends me one, I'll do a thorough field test. Thank you.

    Would you recommend this p17 for a police Duty light?

    • @L5-SAR
      @L5-SAR  7 місяців тому

      Wow. A great question. I think it depends on your beat. The P17 is great for line of sight inside say 100-150 yards. The wider beam can be helpful in parks, parking lots, alleys, and for general sweeps from inside your patrol vehicle. I personally think it fits better mounted on a vest than on your Sam Browne, though. The P18 would probably be a better choice for more wide-open areas, perhaps a more rural beat. You'd probably want to pair it with a small admin light. Just off the top of my head :). Hope that helps and thanks for your service.

      It's not a pure flood, more of a wide hotspot and still has a generous spill.
