Jason Hershey (born 1978 in Spokane, Washington), better known as O-Shen, is a reggae musician, raised in Papua New Guinea.[1] O-Shen resides in Hawai'i but still goes to PNG.[2] He raps and sings most of his songs in Tok Pisin.
im extremely grateful that though i lived only 3 months in png after being born there, i am still able to fluently understand tok pisin because of my parents who spoke it constantly to me as I was growing up in australia. for those who dont understand the meaning of the song: its basically talking about how humanity doesn't have sympathy towards the earth anymore. the message is quite similar to the song 'where is the love?' by the black eyed peas but is moreso based on the environment. in the line of the chorus 'turangu save i go we' oshen is asking where all of our love for both the earth and people around us has gone. in the following verses he sings about specific ways we've become ignorant towards the earth; including our strenuous focus on and usage of money (monipes i toromwe tasol), deforestation of our environment and natural resources (noken i rausim bus is go) etc. im assuming its an observation of the country of papua new guinea specifically and overall just the importance of maintaining culture and tradition instead of focusing on materialistic things.
How about instead of worrying about whether he is white or black ( because he's obviously white) lets just agree that he is Papua New Guinean through and through regardless of skin color... He's one of those rare white PNGeans and he is far more patriotic than most black PNGeans I've ever met
Reggae music is spiritual conscious music for the world but there is so much diversity in reggae Damien Marely and Ziggy Marley are reggae artist yet they are totally different in styles. Damien Marely and artistes like Collie Budz quite like the fact that the Pacific has theyre own style of Reggae. Im part Guyanese and famz in GT love this Pacific music even the Cooliez and Douglaz love it.
That my friend is where your wrong some of these artists that ive mentioned have been requested to play in reggae festival all over the world. Naio a band from vanuatu performed at African music fests in Kenya and Africa unite in Ethiopia. The Sunshiners who are ancient i dont know if you remember them were popular in Europe especially Germany.
Matt M. There isn't a real translation in English unless a new Guinean would take the time to translate He's basically talking bout life was good before it was westernized. And people left their villages for money.
@zfdgz Thank you for this video upload. I've been a fan of Oshen, and of "Nesian" music in general, since looking up information on the Solomon Islands some time back. I've heard Oshen sing in both English and Melanesian Pijin, but this seems to be neither. What language is this? Is it the local tribal language of the area where Oshen grew up? If so, what do you know of this language? Thank you again for any information.
He is singing in Niugini Tok Pisin. It's Melanesia Pidgin but in the raw Niugini style mostly spoken in the Momase and Islands Region of Papua New Guinea.
What about spawnbreezie, J boog, Katchafire, Onetox, all these bands have reached to a certain degree a large amount of international attention. But besides the point the Pacific brand of Music has no need for world musical standards the pacific as you should understand is not a Region known for world standards but for our unique and diversity
Well you're entitled to your opinion and i respect that but why the hell would pacificans want to sound like Jamaicans or Africans???? Our sound island reggae is different which is what makes it uniquely pacifican not african reggae or carribean reggae!!! If you dont like it go to africa!!
Sophy S he's a kumul he's not american. The outer might seem that but he's one of us. He always has being. You don't get to live in png and be American. He's png
