Hey, I just found this series and will start watching. What's in the background? Looks a lot like the '38 Chrysler that I have in the background when I work on my TR3a.

That is a 1938 Buick Special. It belongs to my shop mate Steve. I believe it just got sold so something else sure to be there soon. On the other side is a BMW E3 Bavaria. Thanks for watching!

Well, fortunately, 4 speed transmissions are pretty cheap and you should be able to find one pretty easily. Let me know if you have any issues finding one and I’ll make a few calls if need be. Cheers , Tush

Thanks Chef. I have a few options for 4 speeds. Any chance you know of an OD unit?

Not a complex transmission to rebuild & parts are readily available. Get the circlips & thrust gaps correct, its well documented.

The case crack is a show stopper on this one. Saving the good internals for a better rebuild candidate.

Unless it's a TR3'B', someone has replaced the original with a TR4 transmission (full synchro)....There is no difference in the bellhousing except the starter bulge....It's better and easier to replace the starter with a modern hi-torque unit.....The mounting flange on later transmissions (TR 250/ TR6) is significantly thicker but will still bolt right in to a TR3 with no issues...If it is just a broken bolt flange on the tailshaft, that can be welded by anyone doing aluminum welding, as long as it fits square with the trans body......I've owned and maintained my TR3A (1959) now for 52+ years....I've kept a TR4 trans as a 'spare' for 20 years, even though I've rebuilt the original due to worn synchro rings, instead of just swapping it out,....Have fun, wish I'd found your post sooner, but I tend to cruise the roads more than the internet........... I'd definitely stick with a tr4/tr6 transmission with it's full synchro design ( Post chassis #6000)...AND, just so you know, TR3's with and overdrive came with a 4:11 rear diff,.....non overdrive cars have a 3:73 diff...I have a non-OD with a 4:11 diff. and I've travelled all over Canada, but the rpms are higher than norm at hwy speeds...(Just never bothered installing the 3:73 gearset that's been on a shelf for countless years)...Yeah, it puts about 27% more wear on the engine, so oil changes are even more crucial, haha....Oh yes, the OD cars and the non-OD cars have different speedometers as well...Mine is a non-OD speedo with a 4:11 diff, But, when Canada went metric it actually 'corrected' the readings (almost).......John (west coast, Can.)

Awesome information. Thank you. I do have a replacement TR4 transmission 4 speed. Got word the diff is in good shape and back together. Should be a roller soon! Thanks for watching.
