The 85 was the first prime and only lens that I owned for about a year. I've always recommended it as a must have focal length because it's so versatile, especially if you have the space. Love you passion for this focal length and appreciate all the videos over it too!

  • @Louis87777

The point regarding this being a more uncommon lens and thus stands out is great!
Ironically, before I understood what crop on APS-C was I got an 85 (ie: 135) and loved how it got me tighter compositions and of course interesting compression.
Then, when I went back to my 50mm (ie: 85 essentially) I got to appreciate how 85 feels both not too wide nor narrow compared to an actual 50 or 135. Love this focal length!

I have a Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 L from the old times. It is smooth. Recently, I purchased the FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro.
I do not have enough room for the 85mm when I take pictures indoors in ambient light. The macro proved more useful than I figured. It is great for pointing out details. At full open f/2.8, I get separation if I want it. The need for bigger apertures does not rise often. Portraits call for f/4.0 f/5.6 unless you actually want only the left nostril in focus.

It's just true, Martti, I#m using the 85 1.2 ii too. To use 1.2. or 1.4 ist a riskful gamble with the dept of field. In the meantime I went back to usable photos when Ttking portraits roundabaout 4.0 . Greets to Suomi ;-)

my use of focal length depends on my mood. whenever I wanted to take random photos on the street, I take a wide lens with me, usually my xf 18-56 mm. This is my go-to lens during the day. But whenever I want to be intimate with my photography and want to take photos in artificial lighting environment, I always use my canon ef 85 mm and man you can't believe what photos I take with this set up

I think you are spot on with the 85mm prime lens. It is the sweet spot in so many situations and gives images which are distinctively different from the ubiquitous smart phone. After all if you have the 85mm on your A7C (what i use), you can always pull out your smart phone for the wide angle if necessary

I shoot adventure photography including a lot of overland/off-road. The 85mm is my go-to glass when there’s room to move around on the terrain. Like you said it requires additional length to get more in the frame than just the subject. I use the 50 and 35 on tighter wooded trails.

All are Nikon D lenses but as far as I know should work well on my old d810 and d4s. I just can not jump ship to a mirrorless camera systems with the amount of DSL equipment I have. I am totally agree! I am shooting 90% of my photos with a Zeiss Planar 1.4/50 on my Canon APSC DSLR (80mm equivalent). The sharpness and the character of these lenses are amazing. And the 80-85mm range is way more useful for a prime lens: you can compose for the detail, get further away from the people (pandemic edition) and even shoot some far away cityscapes without cropping out a 40% of your image in post (the case with a 35 or 50mm).

My challenge for you is to make a video with just a cell phone. And make it a cinematic as you possibly can without using a gimbal and just using the stock camera app that comes with the phone with the time lapse feature the slow motion and whatever the features are that you can use at the highest resolution and see if you can make something. That can trick people into thinking it's a DSLR or mirrorless camera now that would be more impressive than using a DSLR or mirrorless camera I think

Around 6:46 into the video of you trying to get the buildings in the frame. That was a sweet shot! My lazy self would have just turned my camera to portrait orientation and just did a pano. Haha! But it wouldn’t have been as great as yours, since you were low to the ground.

    Hi. Loved your review
I’m still new to photography, i have the Z50 nikon, with the kit lens, and the 50mm f/1.8s
If you were in my shoes, would you buy the 85mm f/1.8 S, or the 24-70mm 2.8 S? Or something else entirely. Not having any specific photography goal such as weddings or landscape photography. Something general with vlogging
    Thank you

Nice video. I've just upgraded from my old APS-C camera and picked up my first full frame camera. Currently saving for the 85mm 1.8 and plan to pair it up with a 35mm 1.8. Should make for a good travel kit with the 24-200mm kit lens I got with the camera.

Love the video! Maybe you could do the complete batis line up! "How 25mm lens can boost your photography in 2021", "How 40mm..." and so on for the 18mm and 135mm (would love to see it).
I love the Batis 85mm, but right now it is my least used lens. Often I just tend to go with my 135mm GM. I was even considering selling it. But now...man...this is tough. NO! I cant sell a Batis lens! It feels to damn nice in the hands.
    Keep it up, Jason!

    I got the Sigma 56mm f\1.4 for my Sony 6000 (APS-C) and it's my favourite lens (300€).

I just bought an 85mm as my first prime....I needed to have that sigma 85mm, 1.4. It puts my kit lens to shame. This video helped me justify the high price tag, thanks!

I think you and hines are on to something here with the 85mm but when I’m traveling to a new place and just want to photograph the cool place I’m at, I feel this focal length is very limiting. Even a 35 is sometime limiting to capture that “big thing across the street”. I like 24-40 for walk around personally, but I’ll break out my 85 to feel artsy.

I just like watching your videos. Second lens I bought for my a7C was the Sigma 85mm 1.4 DG DN :)
