Thanks for the pictures and music. My uncle drew beet into that factory with his lorry . I helped out loading the beet with an old chaseide loader into the cleaner and then went for the spin , usually from Wexford up to Carlow. Very fond memories..

It was indeed. She took a fair bit of swinging to start of a frosty morning. And make sure to keep your thumb out of harm's way 😉

It's sad to see a factory like that close down,it created a huge amount of work for road haulers and agri contractors as well as generations of workers in the factory itself

This video was really a great production! Music was so well chosen. First video of yours and I'm gonna subscribe. I just wish I had the chance to see the finished project.

I got my first ever wage packet out of the sugar factory....My da (Leo Farrell ex Eire Og !) used to drive for sugar distributers....his mate didn´t turn up one morning....so i spent the day moving sugar around the back of the lorry for him....his boss (Mick) heard about it and stuck 5 pounds in a real wage envolope for me...i was 5 !!! Maybe thats where i got my work etic from !! MAKES ME VERY SAD to see what has and is happening to Carlow and Ireland in general......all the best from a Carlowvian abroad !!

I remember in May 2005 being stopped at a restaurant/ filling station in Urlingford when the convoy were en route to Mallow with the turbines & other equipment, some sight. Tragic to think then that after only one more season the entire industry was confined to history. Greencore and it’s greed left a huge void in Irish agriculture that was never filled. Not to mention the spin off industries that also benefited hugely.

To think of the men that started that factory, and had to convince farmers to grow beet, and it was all giving away, for 32 pieces of sliver from the great EU, I could be wrong but I think Britain will be proven right to have left the EU.

Our own government sold us down the river by closing this factory. The ultimate blame lies at their feet.

Yeah Britain made the right decision to exit the E.U, the E.U has cost Ireland a lot ! I'd rather Ireland be broke and have full control than be part of the E.U who couldn't give a shit about Ireland or the Irish !

Plus the Government. They put a donegal person in as minister for Agriculture. Writing was on the wall when Carlow closed.

Greencore. The Cromwell of the sugar industry. Bertie sed we didn't need . De de De jobs. We had high end jobs. The then minister for Agriculture looked confused as usual

I remember the smell from the factory, could smell it in Castledermot depending what way the wind was blowing, could see the steam from the factory from Castledermot also.
    Another EU travesty !
