I took an advanced Literature Seminar in Fantasy as an accelerated course this summer. We have to read 4 Conan stories, including this. Thanks to these Conan audiobooks, I have been able to listen on my way to and from work. It has me ahead of schedule and I have enjoyed listening very much. Thank you very much.
my pleasure - i am still looking for some decent recordings of kull stories - kings of the night especially... oh and there is a decent course on weird fiction here on YT - you may look for michael moir
The Priestess; "A god must have his sacrifices. When I was a child in Stygia the people lived under the shadow of the priests. None ever knew when he or she would be seized and dragged to the altar. What difference whether the priests give a victim to the gods, or the god comes for his own victim?" Conan "Such is not the custom of my people," Conan growled, "...the Hyborians do not sacrifice humans to their god, Mitra -by Crom, I'd like to see a priest try to drag a Cimmerian to the altar! There'd be blood spilt, but not as the priest intended."
Live it. Awesome opening Conan n that girl stuck in the desert n lookin like they r screwes n Conan is about to mercy kill her til he saw the city such great imagery its a great opening to this story and aswell as a awesome n fantastic story. Robert E Howard is genius writer. He's in a class of his own. Peace
Wonderful escapism from the news of the sordid Boris wanting to give his father a knighthood. I find the characters in the Conan books preferable to the UK politicians!
This story is awesome and the narrator voice is perfect. It was written in 1934, and it stood the test of time. Natala; "Is he dead Conan?" Conan; "He is dead as Prince Amulric body, transpierced by 40 Stygians arrows"
I don't think it's fair to this story that this is considered one of the lesser good ones. It has so many avant-garde ideas: tentacle pron, hack-n-slash onimusha levels of fighting, a bit of bdsm? the inhabitants are in some kind of chemical virtual world (the matrix, sword art online).. this is advanced stuff for the 1930s.
Underated gem...this just shows the greatness of Robert E Howards writing that they would call this story just average when people today would never make an story as good....I love this story but then again I enjoy n love all of Robert E Howards work especially Conan and Solomon Kane
Nemesis the warlock I’ve got a book, ‘The Complete Chronicles Of Conan: Centenary Edition’ by Robert E. Howard, it’s in there under the title: ‘The Slithering Shadow’. But let me tell ya, I don’t care what you’ve named it, I’m just glad that it’s here to enjoy. Thank you.
Xuthal of the Dusk was Howard's original title for the story, but it was changed upon publication by the editor. Later efforts to get back at Howard's original tale involved removing all editorial alterations, including the title change.
Narrator's voice is the best I've heard so far. Absolutely perfect.
Pre AI - refreshing half a dozen years scrolled forwards.

Cybrarian.

It's a pity Nutella's sisters Marmite, Ovaltine and Bovril don't make an appearance in this story. Still, I suppose they're not to everyone's taste.
Lol what? XD nutella? (Only half finished the story at this point)
Fantastic story! Definitely in my top ten
Fantastic narration!!!!!!!!!

Or American politicians because none of them care about their own people.
Simply outstanding, by CROM! 👏🤓
shows you do not understand Howards world at all. good job repeating catchphrases

46:18: I always chuckled at Conan's insult.
You can tell REH discussed monstrosities with HP Lovecraft
Lecherous frog like demon-creature is a recurring theme. Appears 3 times in REH stories, and possibly comes from Clark Ashton Smith Tsathoggua

Conan; "He is dead as Prince Amulric body, transpierced by 40 Stygians arrows"
Wonderful, thank you.
Wohooo!! Love it! Thank you man.

41:27 ooh! I wonder if Howard thought out the possibility of the Wine Conan Drank at the Absent Host's Dinner being said Wine... Hmmm 🤔
Lol, Conan is legitimacy offended while actively ignoring that he killed a man and poisoned the well in his first minute.
As is his want by Crom.

I thought this was titled ‘The Slithering Shadow’?
I am only aware of this title, that being said... some have two, i ran into this only once however. Would you care to supply the source for the name?

@@taelonar5973 thank you for the answer
The Slithering Shadow was the original title. In some later publications it was for some reason renamed.
Xuthal of the Dusk was Howard's original title for the story, but it was changed upon publication by the editor. Later efforts to get back at Howard's original tale involved removing all editorial alterations, including the title change.
People griping about pronunciations of 90 y/o fantasy words presented in a well done and FREE audiobook are weak
welcome to nerd culture i guess - dont get me started on how 2 pronounce Cthulhu ^^

I must say it bugs me too... although the voice itself seems great so far.
