    Another reason we need fast trains in this country.

      You pay? I will rather drive. Oops, don't forget to build a Metro in Canberra, you pay again.

      Any car thats not a V8, isnt using $80 worth of fuel to go from Sydney to Canberra... Half the time too.

      @@IBLOWN Usual absurd underestimation of real cost of driving: "It's just the fuel"!
      Drivers wildly underestimate the real cost of owning and driving a car. They sleep easier not knowing just how much they are really tossing away.
      A car takes 3-3.5 hrs to do the trip, a whole lot worse if there is one of those massive traffic jams in Sydney. Canberra to Sydney at 85¢ per km (ATO/RACV rate) works out to be $242.68 (cheaper to fly). And that does not count the cost of parking at destinations or circling blocks endlessly trying to find a spot or a parking station. Sydney parking is +$26-$35 per day. Canberra it is $13 per day.
      The train does not cost $80. It is $50.84 full fare, $28.25 concession, and takes slightly over 4 hrs from Kingston to Central. Add transfer times to final destination.
      Zero chance of being wiped out by a semi en-route as well.

    Definitely go back and make a weekend of it. So many amazing things to do there and the night life is reasonable too. The war memorial and cockington green were a couple of my favourite attractions.

    I've done the trip in reverse. In an ideal world this trip should be well under 3 hours, thats without investing in fast rail and just improving the current rail. The train would get far more use if the trip was under 3 hours each way.

    • @peterbreis5407
      @peterbreis5407 7 місяців тому

      In an ideal world the trip will take under 3 hrs from city centre to city centre, with trains leaving every 3 hrs or better. That would let you catch a 0600 train, arriving at destination around 0900 and returning 8-9 hrs later.

      The train is constantly full from my experience taking the train - its not the speed of the journey limiting passengers, its the frequency, the times the trains leave Canberra are also inconvenient. Though I wouldn't say no to a sub-3 hour trip.

    • @JustinWatson23
      @JustinWatson23 14 днів тому

      @@the_clawing_chaos the speed isn't stopping it from being full thats for sure, but a sub 3hr service say 5-6 times a day would probably also be full. I also look forward to the new R set trains coming..... sometime maybe in 2025! Wifi and power will be appreciated by business travellers.

    Ridiculous to spend 9 hours travelling, plus transfers because Canberra's train station is inconveniently out at Kingston. Not even in Kingston itself, actually a kilometre away.
    We can dream of the day they move the Canberra Station into the City and get the train trip under 3 hours, and let you use the Opal Card. Like that's going to happen!

    Canberra buses are actually pretty good on weekdays, much better than most Australian cities of similar size, but there are definitely problems. The buses are made for local workers and students, not for visitors, so they don't run to tourist spots and they don't run very often at night or weekends. Still miles better than Newcastle buses post-privatisation.

    I dont think we are ever going to get high speed rail like Europe or Japan (350km/hr+) I dont think it will ever get the funding, but I feel like they could do something about straightening the tracks or something I believe the XPT train averages like 80km/hr if your lucky, if they could just get 150kms/hr+ then the train would start making a lot more sense. Even more if canberra had a station in the city centre.
    Unfortunatly if your not driving the coach just makes so much more sense (3 1/2 hours) city centre to city centre.
    Great video!

  • @peterhoz
    @peterhoz 19 днів тому

    So if you catch a train to Canberra, you cannot buy a ticket for the bus unless you ride illegally to a location where the tickets are sold. There's no agencies near the train station that sells the MyWay ticket. THIS IS STUPID! Obviously designed by people who don't actually use public transport!
