Dear Tomislav, I did finaly make the jump and followed every advice that Richard Raffan and you have shared other the past year: one of them was to invest in the Vicmarc serie: so I ordered to Marco two Vm100 with 55mm Shark Jaws and Dovetail 100mm and no standard jaws at all. They came all the way up to Mexico! I could'nt be more satisfied. I just begun this great adventure of wood turning and again, Richard and you are my distant but so present Mentors!! So, from the bottom of my heart, thank you!!

@@tomislavtomasicwoodturning you are very much welcome. I think I have seen all of your videos (most of them more than once), and most if not all of Richar's ones. I went for Henry Taylor's tools (the ones you use more) and am only missing a proper shear scraper as yours are made from old tools reshaped...and I do not have old tools yet! Also went for the Herald Record Power as my workshop is really small, I do use the swiveling head for almost every project. Now I need to find proper wood to work with, not so an easy job here in Mexico...first thing is to avoid buying wood illegaly cut by local mob...Anyway, soon enough I'll share my process and hopefully someday share it.
I know that Boris is quite common there, I even share my last name with a Slovenian politician that worked quite hard during 2nd world war for freedom and a democratic Yougoslavia....
I do hope we meet someday, in Croatia or in Mexico! Richard's is too far away for me!!

I guess vicmark is a good Chuck, never had or used. But you still have to go thru 8 screws to change the jaws. Barracuda now has eliminated that chore but limited on jaws. When will someone else improve on that. Chucks and jaws have been the same forever.

Indeed, not much has changed over the years, idealy you have to have chuck for every jaws you have, that way you don't have to change it...but if this is a hobby for someone then that option is not viable..... Easy wood tools have I believe quick change jaws and few jaws more...might be worth the look

Everyone seems to very keen to slag off nova chucks remember you get what you pay for, they might not be the best but they cost less than half what you will need to pay for a vicmark, when i started witching Tomislav he was using a green lathe which small, underpowered and frankly i would not have tied a rope to it and used it as boat anchor. Good on Vicmarc! I can't imagine a more worthy recipient.
I've been using nova chucks -- available locally (SC and MA) and made in NZ when I started. Now I have many sets of jaws and I am constantly frustrated by the lack of overall quality. A small (mini) chuck was even recalled. So I've been meaning to switch to Vicmarc for some time. Already have a Vicmarc lathe. And a VB36. And Steinart now has a chuck body that bolts directly to the spindle that takes Vicmarc (or Axminster) jaws. That's a long way off ($$$)
It's meaningful that I've seen a Vicmarc in your previous videos. You've gone to some trouble to get the best. Now I have no excuse.

Maybe 30 years ago when I wanted to get my first chuck, my friend who sold me my first lathe said to call Craft Supplies USA and get a Super Nova. When I called them, the tech told me that if I was going to spend the money, the Vicmark chuck was the better chuck. I am sure all of the current big name chucks are quality items, but no regrets at all about staying with Vicmark chucks. The production bowl turners I know all use them.

I have owned both the Record Power and I just switched over to Vicmark. The Vicmark chucks are much better made, have tighter tolerances, and have a much better and more complete line of jaws than anyone else on the market. They are also easier to maintain, and unbelievable as it may seem, the company even has videos on how to maintain them!!! They do cost more money, but they are a lifetime buy. If you want to go large, then the VM120/150 can do anything else anyone would ever want to do on a non commercial (CNC) woodturning lathe.

I have two lathes, one with 1"× 8tpi and one with 1"× 10tpi.headstock spindle. I have two Oneway Talon chucks for each lathe with a variety of Jaws that I can interchange if needed. What I like is that they can be ordered with taperloc inserts that can be changed if required to suit the spindle size. The Jumbo screw fits into all the jaws even the largest with gives 3 1/4" register when turning a blank. I also like the fact that they can be completely stripped down to body only if dust gets into the spiral. Love your videos though, very informative no matter what the subject and always good to learn something new.

That is my one buyer's remorse, buying Nova after buying a cheap Amazon chuck. It should've been Vicmarc or OneWay, possibly Easy Wood Tools. But, Nova has not let me down on any of my five jaws, so I shouldn't feel that way. I guess the speed of jaw changes on EWT, or travel of Vicmarc would be worth nice. I always thought Richard was cranking that thing more than the 20mm range I had. I never realized it was double the distance. So, what's next? Save for CBN or start changing over my chucks. :) Great demo, Tom!

Wonderful to see a precision item still made in Australia, a rare thing these days, since we moved so much of our manufacturing off-shore. Almost all locally made items are expensive, with the result many of us doing wood turning as a hobby have to buy the cheaper less well made ‘imported’ equivalent. Nice to see that a viewer has gifted you a Made in Australia product, where it will be put to good use on a daily basis, and where it’s quality will let you enjoy using it. How do I know which spindle gouges are good for bowls and which not? Is the KS HSSE 16,5mm spindle gouge usable to rough out big chunks of logs to get them into bowl form?

Hello Dave, thank you for kind words and I'm honored that you like my work on UA-cam 🤗 thank you sir 😀
Life does interfiere a lot with filming videos but luckily everything is ok, I just found out that many viewers don't have the time to watch every day video if I post every day, I value everyones time that they and you have taken to watch my videos, so I upload every other day or every third day..... And honestly it does free up time for commision work as well so a lot of organization involved to find the time for everything ☺️
Spindle gouges - I would start with AVOIDING spindle roughing gouge, the one with U shape flute, tall paralell sides and tang for handle.... Those can be confused with regular spindle gouges but they are only for spindle work.
More modern shape of spindle gouge, machined from round bar are great for spindle as well cross grain work.... They have shallow flute and in most cases flute follow outside curve if you look at the end of it.
Those can be used for bowls, spindle gouges are cheaper they bowl gouges so there is economy aspect as well. There is a learning curve to use those the way you see but on my mind well worth the time..... Ks hsse spindle gouges are great and I have video with that gouge how to make a platter and newer , how I rough out elm bowl with GURTOOL spindle gouge, that one is 16,5mm.... Awsome tools and I believe I did close ups of the flute designs so you can see it better what works for cross grain ☺️.....
I hope that helpes ☺️ I could make a video on this subject 🤗.
