I remember going to high school for the first time (8 years ago). The best advice I can give is hang out with the right people! Just because they’re your friends, doesn’t mean they have your best interest at heart. Friends come and go throughout high school but as long as you have one true friend, that’s all you need ❤️❤️

yeah columbia is an ivy league school, which is hard to get into. (not saying it will be hard for Karli she can probably get in bc she’s smart) but their acceptance rate is 7% and you have to have a 4.17 ish gpa and have to score in the 75th percentile on ur sats. And I know this bc i will be a junior this year and Columbia is one of my dream colleges too!

    • @sonne6210

Yah it’s my freshman year and I’m taking one AP class and the rest are all honors, if you’re school offers s magnet like mine does I would recommend applying for it. It gets you first choice at all the good classes and the classes are more secure.

Haha I don’t even have lockers at my high school. Most of the high schools in California are like that and there isn’t a “hallway” either because it’s an outdoor type school. The classes are inside and everything else (where we eat lunch, walking out of the classroom for passing periods between classes) is all outside :) the only lockers we have is inside the gym just for freshman PE but they are like 12” by 12” just for like PE shoes hahaha

Hey Karli! Just wanted to give you some Columbia advice. They're really interested in students who are politically active, so joining Model UN and similar clubs would be a great idea. You can also try to get leadership positions in your student council, yearbook committee, etc. Best of luck!!

hey karli i’m in the grade above you and also looking at columbia. i just finished freshman year with a 4.67. just focus on your goal and do whatever you can to achieve it. take honors, aps, do extracurriculars. but most important, surround yourself with good people! good luck this year!

MaddieK well out school used to have lockers and they way they used to work is you would get your books for the first three periods and go to ur classes (you carry the books around it your backpack) and then at the first break you can go back to your lockers for the next 2 periods and then after the second break you can get your books for the last period of the day and at the end of the day you can go back to the locker, but they took them away and brought these dumb cubbyholes that you are supposed to put the backpack in and the backpack won’t fit but it is full of book 😭😭😭 so I would appreciate having lockers.

I have locks that arent attached they are hanging on the hole from the handle then every time we unlock them we have to take them off so I would rather have something like yours we had to request their lockers this year though because nobody used theirs last year cuz everybody care their book bags around in high school at least and my middle school and high school are in the same building so it's not really that hard for freshman to get ajudsted but good luck carli and remember all the other freshman has been went to school there either so you're fine you'll do good just believe in yourself

Applying to colleges is so exciting! Have backups Karli! I had a dream school too but still applied to 8 others. Also it is much easier to get into a top school like Columbia if you go to a community college first and then transfer. Just keep your options open! :)

If karli tries to get a 4.0 every year in high school, her average is still gonna be 4.0 bc 4.0 multiplied by 4 is 16. Then 16 divided by 4 is 4. So she’ll need to try and get higher than a 4.0 in one of her years in high school. Just trying to help♥️♥️♥️ but I like karli’s mindset. Especially in high school, it’s easy to get wrapped up in boys and drama but if she has that mindset already, good for her

    • @mycolorisorange4916

I love education. It is my favorite aspect of life and the most vital to one’s success as well. My dream school for higher education is Harvard University. I’ve wanted to attend since I was five years old. I’ve always been the student who loves reading, testing, working, studying, and generally, anything that pertains to school. You may hear many say this [a statement about their goal of going to Harvard], but they don’t enforce mentalities upon themselves that enable them to be persistent and have a higher chance of getting in. My sister graduated from Harvard this year and I have stayed in campus many times. Everytime I entered, it was more than an overjoying emotion that was able to release extensive amounts of dopamine from my brain. It is the only place I feel is fitting for me, even only at 13. It is one of my aspirations in life (which all regard academics.) I love to see that there are others who are willing to share their education with others and are as passionate about it as I am.😄

There is no way Karli can get into Columbia the acceptance rate is low and if you want a 4.1 GPA you have to take advance classes in high school definitely junior or senior year..... my sister graduated with a 4.16 and didn’t get accepted to Columbia she was also Valedictorian

Karli I am not trying to put you down or anything but Columbia is a pretty high target to go for! It takes a lot of work and dedication as it would for any Ivy League in general. You have to start your journey starting now. Take the most rigorous course work that u can that is offered at your school and try to be involved in the community but I honestly think UA-cam will be such a good and strong background for you when you apply, considering your following. And as much as grades r important, they r not everything- I think the best way to view the college admission process is that the first stage is looking at your academic background, they just want to see if you are in their academic range (I would say the 50th percent tile so if i was u I would do a lil bit more research to see what that is for Columbia specifically) and then from there there you move on to the next stage- where they will see what sets you apart from the other applicants which is where they look at your extra curricular and essays so that’s when it’s your time to stand out! I read in a study that in 2018 About 75% of MITs applicants were qualified academically which is crazy because out of all of those they could only admit about 4%! So what set them all apart! (That’s it for now lol i know that this rlly long)

At my school in the UK, our lockers don’t actually have locks, but you can attach your own padlock to it if you would like too, personally I don’t see the point as it takes so long to open it and I don’t keep valuables in my locker, just books and my sports kit so that’s ok :)) xx

  • @chloe_3787

2:49 that is possible at a lot of schools. I mean, maybe not yours I guess, but a lot of the time, honors courses are weighted so you get 150% credit for the course though that's obviously not how it will read in the gradebook. That's the best way I can explain it. I ended my freshman year with a 4.5. Also, this just made me laugh becuase I hear so many people mispronounce it, it's valedictorian not valevictorian lol.
And don't worry, you'll be fine in school. I was so nervous my freshman year, but by second quarter, I knew what I was doing. Try not to stress, but I know it's hard. Study, ask questions when you have the opportunity, pay attention in class, hang out with the right people, and keep yourself out of trouble. Good luck!

At my high school we don’t have lockers, but the school is huge so I guess maybe they don’t have them because they already know it will take to long to go to your locker. The thumbprint locker idea sounds like it could be so helpful! ☺️💜

I can’t believe how fast time flies. I start school on the 15th of September( actually the 17th, because the 15th is a Saturday, 2 more daysss of vacation 🎉🎊🎊) and I just don’t wanna start, not only is it school but it’s also 12th grade which is my last year- can you believe it?! Also, since it’s the last year, I have exams, and uni preparation, and I don’t wanna leave school forever 🤷🏻‍♀️. Actually, my locker looks almost like Karli’s but you open it with a key, which I like better, and it doesn’t have a shelf. Also, I share it with a friend. And you are lucky to have your schedule, I will have mine probably one week after school starts. Good luck and don’t be scared ❤️

in australia we don't have lockers, we put everything in our backpacks, but teachers tend to keep heavy textbooks in there classrooms so we don't have to carry them, we just carry work/writing books and seniors will carry a binder.
