Hey shroom, I live on the Georges river and that spiny fish is called a bullrout also the estuary stone fish, I've caught baby's like under 5cm and touché s the spines and no issues but I've caught an adult once it was around 35cm, yes very dangerous I believe they are in the stonefish family so avoid hands or skin contact Great vid Pete
yo shroom jus a quick tip with some fish like bream and ludrick sometimes the best option is to jus free spool it and when you see it running you set the hook as the little fish will pec kbut the big ones will jus pick it up and run and i find with the free spool it tends to trick the fish and you can catch alot more doing it
Thats a bullrout aka an estuary stone fish. I have caught a few before on bait. Fishing the same way you are now haha baiting jigheads and letting it drift down rock walls. Caught a massive one at swansea Bridge at Lake mac. Went 40cm!
Thanks Ham, that's huge! Can't beat jigheads for simplicity haha. It was light enough to basically waft around on the bottom because of the depth, current and wind
@@ShroomFishing exactly! Throw on a generous length of 10-15lbs fluoro leader. A worm hook with a number 0 sinker and drop it off a breakwall. I have caught many big bream doing that. Often just pull my plastic off and throw a prawn on and let it drop.
Awesome stuff, going back to basics, seems a lot of people miss this. Id also suggest a garden earthworm on a jighead, slow retrieve , also gets smashed by bream, flathead, whiting.... If you don't have any earthworm handy, let me know , I've got a good supply here👍.
That wacky looking fish you caught looked like a Sydney rock cod which if you pick up without getting spiked it is harmless and also give you hands a quick was in the water after holding it
Very entertaining video champion, You need to head back to the canal, the other day there was 3 different packs of salmon busting up on jelly prawns, at the same time, the noise could be heard down the canal, they were right at my feet at one stage, but I still haven't managed to hook one , even threw the small MMD SOFT PRAWN, but no hook up, i can feel the lures touching fish as i reel it straight through the packs, might need to get a metal casting jig with trebles, but that wouldn't be real sporty, as you could jag them so easily, but would rather a lure in its mouth, a bit more fair, great work champion, braving the cold to entertain us,
Thanks as always Anthony! I just can't seem to run into them, I had my fly rod and they knew I was coming! I'll see if I can swing by and catch them in the act, I reckon I have the answer!
Sick little night sesh by the shroom all I ever use when I’m bait fishing is small jighead and prawns but It usually goes better then that session did 🤣🤙
Mate, really enjoyable video to watch. You caught everything except the kitchen sink ! Gee that Bullrout fish looked a nasty piece of work. Looked like a busy session though. Cheers 👍
When using the jighead rig you might try feeding the hook in thru the tail first instead of like how you thread a plastic on. This way stops the fish from getting a good hold of the tail which can rip the prawn off, tail first lets the hook sit inside the meaty part of the prawn.
Servo prawns are ok, my uncle used to take me out in the tinney as a kid, we would grab a packet of servo pranws and catch fish, silver Bream, Black Bream, flathead and other stuff.... you need to do a video to find them big Sydney Black Bream, they are there man..

Thanks a lot Stephen! It has been hard but luckily night fishing is still possible. Bream have been sparse and flathead are MIA for me haha. That was a big fat crab for sure 😎
nice video man😀, question for your next podcast when tieing leader to lure (jighead or hard body) loop knot or uni knot? and why in place of the other?
I am guessing it is leatherjackets that are taking your bait, hence it is best to peel the prawn as suggested by ronmb81. Maybe about a metre or two off the bottom and not have too much slack on your line. But great vid, brings back my fishing day when I was young. Have you tried Jeffery Street Wharf?
We didn't lose too many baits Fai mostly because night fishing it's a lot slower but usually decent fish are on the end of the line. I usually peel and throw in weightless and wait for it to go off like a hand grenade lol Not recently

Hi mate. If it looks like a bullrout that’s enough for me . Steer clear. Packet prawns are a very poor bait. If you can buy Australian fresh prawns from your fish market they make a much better bait. By the way bream love the head of prawns so whole prawn is a good option. Another bait challenge, cheese or garlic sausage. Both great bream bait at night especially amongst oysters
