Musician strike during 1940’s created a need for a cappella and paved the way for Do wop There were many songs with elaborate vocal harmony .
The people who sang vocal harmonies in 50’s must have been inspired by the vocal only songs in 40’s.vocal harmonies are beautiful
I’m so glad so many people can sing harmony and carry the tune .I can sing melody but when I hear the melody I don’t really hear the harmony part.At age 17 they tried to teach me to sing alto.I did great with soprano.they sang the melody my ears heard best.

A great documentary about the wonderful sound of singing a cappella and how it was born. I was honored to be a part of it.

I sang plenty of a cappella with my group from The Bronx, Marble Hill Projects in the early 1960's. However my brother, who was 4 years older than me, got to go to all the shows from the early 50's. I missed out on that. This is great history. I bought records from Times Square Records. Great memories. Also Cousins Records Store on Fordham Road, Bronx. Of course, later years I found U.G.H.A. Ronnie I and his Clifton Record Store in Clifton, New Jersey.

Knowledge about the songs, the groups, group history etc was key. There are some good YT sites that deal with Slim Rose and the history of Times Square Records, one even has a short recording of Slim’s voice.

Having been born and raised in Jersey City, and a proud graduate of Dickinson High School, I was so happy to hear so many references to our old town in this video! I loved it. It brought back a lot of fond memories to this 69 year old guy. Thanks for the memories guys!

Wow! Same here, seeing the Stephen Crane Village where I grew up until I was almost 5, while that street corner singing was just outside my back door, about 75 feet from the lamp posts. I would have never realized back then how historic this would be.

Thank you Abe & crew for all your efforts and for including my husband Jerry Lawson. Below is a little more info.
Though The Persuasions were not a Doo Wop group they certainly took group harmony singing to a new place and Jerry created the new genre Contemporary A Cappella. I like to call it A cappella Soul. Do you know of any other all Black a cappella groups putting out albums today? I'd love to hear them.
The Persuasions are the only A cappella group to record 22 albums on major labels, collaborate and tour with folks like Frank Zappa
(who gave them their first album recording deal) Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, The Five Blind Boys, The Neville Brothers, Ray Charles, Liza Minnelli and many more. They appeared on The Tonight Show, Mike Douglas, Saturday Night Live, and more.
Also the only A cappella group together 40 years with all original members but one, Herbert Rhoad who passed away. The Persuasions ended in 2003. Jerry was through with a cappella. He was planning to record in Russia with a hundred piece orchestra, The Moscow Philharmonic.
But it seems the universe had other plans for him. Jerry intersected with a group from Oakland, CA who had been studying and performing Jerry's arrangements for 30 years so they were well seasoned and a perfect fit. Together they became Jerry Lawson & Talk of The Town. And Jerry recorded his only a cappella album after leaving The Persuasions. He felt it was the masterpiece of his
a cappella career. 20 tracks, a 20 page booklet of liner notes and an hour of an eclectic song choices.
Jerry spent his life preserving the dying art and lived long enough to see the word a cappella become part of everyday vocabulary. Then miracles of miracles, a TV show/series for several seasons, The Sing Off was aired during primetime on Network TV. And they featured Jerry and Talk of The Town.
And at age 70 Jerry's dream of recording with musicians finally manifested through Eric Brace of Redbeet Records in Nashville. Jerry made his debut as a solo artist with some of Nashville's top musicians. The album: Jerry Lawson Just A Mortal Man.
And coming in 2021 is the documentary about Jerry's legacy . Jerry Lawson, Just A Mortal Man. ( vimeo.com/224125842)
FYI- there is a group of singers calling themselves The Persuasions now, performing mostly Jerry's vocal arrangements. They are not The Persuasions. They are a tribute group who for some reason wants to believe they are The Persuasions. And wants record labels, booking agents and the audiences to believe it too. A real insult to taint Jerry & The Persuasions legacy that way.
For the facts and lots more info you might enjoy www.jerrylawson.biz and www.thepersuasions.org
Jerry left us July 10th 2019 and it's very painful for me. I do hope anyone visiting here will explore his catalog and help me keep his legacy alive by gifting his music. And as Jerry would say, "God Bless You Always".. Julie Lawson

This documentary gives you a lot of the history of the doo-wop accapellas. They took the inspiration of James Petrillo’s AFM Musician’s Strike in 1942 and 1948 and became the street corner sound.
It first started around 1942 when AFM President James Petrillo decided to ban all of musician’s and brought in backup vocals along with artists like Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and others had recorded many of the songs during the musician’s strike.
The Song Spinners, one of the early vocal groups had a #1 hit in 1943 in a WW2 song “Comin’ In On A Wing And A Prayer”, and it was their biggest hit during the AFM Musician’s Strike.
And prior to that came the Barbershop Quartets. They first started during the early 20th century where they sang in Barbershops. That was way before this. First, the barbershop quartets, and then the AFM Musician’s Strike of 1942 and 1948, but them together, and you get a doo-wop acapella.

There's a phrase in Italian, a cappella, that means without instrumental accompaniment. What a coincidence!

Lived on the Lower East Side, High School in the Bronx and hung out near the Washington Square Arch. One day a group of us guys (near all sang together before) did a few songs under the Arch. A guy steps out of the crowd and ask "how long you guys been singing together" We told him about "10 minutes". Short story is he told us he'd have us making records in a week. I said no - for me the music we made was free - didn't want to be managed. Anyway was going into the service 1965.

In this story when one of the guys talked about Stan Krause asking them if they wanted to sing some a cappella, there is an album cover for the album I Dig A cappella. My group(withoutme, I went into the Navy) recorded on that album. They were called The Versailles. Joe Spano was the lead vocal of my group but, I notice he is singing background on this album. I don't know why they made that decision but, Joe was the better lead. Joe went on to sing Tenor and Lead vocal with The Devotions.

My understanding of the documentary was gloss over the contributions of the Black artists and focused on the white groups who reaped the benefits. Same as the Blues, Rock and Roll and others.
