Play A Simple Melody - Bing and Gary Crosby

- Bing and Gary Crosby's rendition of "Play A Simple Melody" is a joy to hear, a feast for the ear! It was a million-selling top ten hit for Bing and Gary Crosby in 1950.
It was written by Irving Berlin in 1914. During his 60-year career, he wrote an estimated 1500 songs. Incredible as it sounds, Irving Berlin couldn't read or write music, and could only play the piano in the key of - F sharp - (just the black keys).
The big band sound made me think of the Mardi Gras held every year in New Orleans, Louisiana. I made this video for those of you (like me) who will probably never get to celebrate the Mardi Gras in person.
Mardi Gras is French for "Fat Tuesday" (in ethnic English tradition, Shrove Tuesday), referring to the practice of the last night of eating richer, fatty foods before the ritual fasting of the Lenten season, which starts on Ash Wednesday. Related popular practices were associated with celebrations before the fasting and religious obligations associated with the penitential season of Lent. Popular practices included wearing masks and costumes, overturning social conventions, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. Similar expressions to Mardi Gras appear in other European languages sharing the Christian tradition. In English, the day is called Shrove Tuesday, associated with the religious requirement for confession before Lent begins.
In many areas, the term "Mardi Gras" has come to mean the whole period of activity related to the celebratory events, beyond just the single day. In some US cities, it is now called "Mardi Gras Day" or "Fat Tuesday". The festival season varies from city to city, as some traditions consider Mardi Gras the entire period between Epiphany or Twelfth Night and Ash Wednesday. Others treat the final three-day period before Ash Wednesday as the Mardi Gras. In Mobile, Alabama, Mardi Gras-associated social events begin in November, followed by mystic society balls on Thanksgiving, then New Year's Eve, followed by parades and balls in January and February, celebrating up to midnight before Ash Wednesday. In earlier times parades were held on New Year's Day. Other cities famous for Mardi Gras celebrations include Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Quebec City, Quebec in Canada; Mazatlan in Mexico; and New Orleans, Louisiana in the United States. Many other places have important Mardi Gras celebrations as well.
Carnival is an important celebration in Catholic European nations. In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the week before Ash Wednesday is called "shrovetide", ending on Shrove Tuesday. It has its popular celebratory aspects as well. Pancakes are a traditional food. Pancakes and related fried breads or pastries made with sugar, fat and eggs are also traditionally consumed at this time in many parts of Latin America and the Caribbean. - Розваги
This is the first song my father thought me to play on the guitar I was 7 now I'm 45 I have heard my father sing this many times but today was the first time I heard this song on UA-cam, this brings tears to my eyes when I think of my father singing this song with me all those years ago, thank you dad R IP❤
And isn’t it a gift when music can put you right there with hm even though he’s gone. I know exactly what you’re talking about.
This tune was stuck in my head due to the animated series "No Evil" at episode 4. Now I know the song.
Thinking of Morecambe and wise brought me here!
Boom
Oooh
Yat ta ta ta
Me too
Yes, me too.
When I was a little girl, I got my first crush on Gary Crosby. When the family would go to a reataurant I'd ask dad for a quarter for the juke box (5 plays for a quarter then). He stopped giving me quarters when he realized I was playing this song all the time.
betsy lee did a cover of this never heard this version before
That's how i found this song and wayfaring stranger.
Same. She's got a beautiful voice, and I'd love for her to hear an extended version of her cover, but I don't have Twitter or anything to ask if she'd do it.
That's why I'm here too
Maureen712 deserves serious kudos for her perceptive writing that accompanies this song. If only everyone who posted a song was half as dedicated... Thumbs UP!
I love this tune the way Father and Son did it. My Father owned a cafe and of course it had a juke box. That's where I first heard it. Yeah, I'm a little on the old side, but younger than Gary. Thank you for putting it here. Old Cap'n Kent
God bless you, soldier.
I havent heard this song in 6 years and i still sing it almost everyday
Always makes me sad........ Gary was multi talented........
thank you for this absolutely delightful mix of songs I grew up with and love to hear.
Who all came here after hearing the song in no evil?
Great. Thanks very much.
This is a beautiful video, and the song makes me think of my Mother, who played this song many times when I was a child. She was a fan of Bing Crosby as was my Father, who himself was a singer on a radio show from Easton Pa. 5 *****

maravilloso bing crosby y gary crosby inolvidables
We sang this song in grade school in the 1970s. I liked the song. I had no idea it was a Crosby & Son song. It is mentioned in an article I was just reading. Thought I would check it out to see if it was the same song I remember singing in school. Still like it.
We sang this in Show Choir. I just remembered it tonight and had to find it on UA-cam.
relly good music, thanks

Great tune and the photos gave it a lot more life. I've never been to Mardi Gras so it was a real treat. My favorite shot was the "Bud girls", of course. haha I'll never see frog's eyes the same way again. :) Thanks for the fun.

Won't you play some simple melody
Like my mother sang to me?
One with a good old fashioned harmony
Play some simple melody
Musical demon, set your honey a dreamin'
Won't you play me some rag?
Just change that classical nag to some sweet beautiful drag
If you will play from a copy of a tune that is choppy
You'll get all my applause
And that is simply because I wanna listen to rag
Musical demon, set your honey a dreamin'
Won't you play me some rag?
Just change that classical nag to some sweet beautiful drag
If you will play from a copy of a tune that is choppy
You'll get all my applause
And that is simply because I wanna listen to rag
Musical demon, set your honey a dreamin'
Won't you play me some rag?
Just change that classical nag to some sweet beautiful drag
If you will play from a copy of a tune that is choppy
You'll get all my applause
And that is simply because I wanna listen to rag
Play from a copy of a tune that is choppy
You'll get all of my applause because
I wanna rag it, ragtime melody.
