I had good luck some years back using a piece of thin wall brass hobby pipe that I filed some cutting "teeth" onto its tip. Drilling in reverse did the trick for me, just barely into it the screw bound up inside the piping and it just ran itself out, saving me the need for a full plug. Looks like this worked out well for you and will be of assistance, thanks!

Without any special tools… use a 3/32 drill alongside the screw, pop the screw sideways and remove with needle nose. Fill with wood glue and a couple tooth picks broken flush. Not pretty but quick and effective.
