Stumpwork: An Introduction to Wired Slips

- Stumpwork is a three dimensional embroidery technique utilizing padding and wire. This tutorial will focus on wired slips which are 3D elements created using wire, fabric and floss. You will need plenty of patience to tackle a stumpwork project but you only need to know a handful of stitches to create these dynamic additions to your hand embroidery art.

A quick hint for wayward wire tails. I use a small piece of low-tack tape to tape the very ends of the wires down to the fabric. That way they don't catch my thread every time I try to make a stitch. :)
Don't be scared by the time stamp, really great helpful tutorial. Works nicely at x1.25 speed.

I started freaking out when you were starting the close cutting but these are so beautiful and really open up some awesome possibilities. Maybe a long term project though, that's a lot of really close work. I've been a long time watcher, I did a double hoop as like my third project because you made it seem so accessible. Thank you for the great tutorial and sharing your knowledge. I'm new to 3D embroidery but I'm going to try using some fabric paint (no heat fix) after couching the wire. I have a feeling it could work to hide those bits after cutting out. I guess we'll see 😊

Its quicker and easier just to interweave the wire seperately then stitch it on. No need for fabric. If you want it puffed add a bit of fabric underneath when you stitch it to the main piece. Interweave like ''figur 8'' until nicely packed. No worries about stitch direction that way. Do a straight stitch around the edge later if you need the stitched well locked in.

I would have thought for sure that the buttonhole around the wire would mostly be done after the fabrics been cut out to hide the edge of the fabric. In my mind you go through and tack it down quite a few places but the last step would be finishing it off at the edges after cutting
I have found you can just baste the wire firmly with even regular weight threads, fill, cut out leaving a *tiny* bit more than normal and then basically wrap the wire with embroidery thread once it's already cut out, if that makes sense? Sorry I'm totally self taught so I'm not sure all the proper names for things, but that has worked for me. Or just using organza for stuff even if it doesn't require the sheerness haha

Jessica, you mentioned that pliers were useful for pulling wires and needles through fabric: I've tried all sorts of hand tools and found they didn't grip the needle as well as I wanted, and they sometimes caused gouges (can't spell) on the needle, which meant it wouldn't pull smoothly through fabrics after that. I bought these, from Amazon, and they're brilliant! They really grab the needle, they also work on jars and bottles, and I am so glad I bought them. I bet you'll find them on Amazon USA too.
