Otis Davis' joy here is a thing of beauty. First man under 45 seconds in the 400. Amazing. And his upright running style brings to mind Michael Johnson, as Kenny Moore noted in his book, Men of Oregon.
I saw a photo of this finish when I was a teenager and it inspired me to run the 440 yard dash in high school and college. Cool to finally see the live coverage after all these years!
I had the immense honor to meeting Mr. Smith!!! He's an US Army Veteran... I was filling in a the Jersey City NJ Veterans Clinic, guess who comes in for lab work!!! Yes, I lost it! He's up there in age, but still has the fire burning for the sport!!! What a great gentleman! I was so messed up I didn't take a picture!!!!
This is the heartbreaking moment for India where Indian MILKHA SINGH ji miss by Whiskers for Bronze medal ,if he win bronze medal then he is the first Indian athlete to won Athletic medal in the Olympic , He is a inspiration for many Indians forever , miss you sir , RIP SIR 😔😔😔💐💐🙏🙏🙏
According to the description of the video, Carl Kaufmann was the world record holder. This is incorrect. The world record was held by Lou Jones, USA, with a time of 45,2 seconds.
I read about this race as a young boy, great to see the video. Looks like Otis had a slight backward leaning posture, like Michael Johnson or am i wrong?
Carl Kaufmann lief auf dieser Aschenbahn 45,08 über 400m. Damit würde er heute locker Deutscher Meister werden. Wo sind die großen deutschen Läufer geblieben?

I had a lot of respect for milkha singh till I came to about this lie of his....so much for publicity.....so much for making moolah....
He was leading at 200 m. In a way that since Milkha singh was running in the outer lane. So obviously the guy who is running in the outermost lane was just few yards before him.
He never looked back. The other 3 athletes were simply faster than him. He made up excuses later that he slowed down after 200m or that he looked back or whatever else.
no. milkha singh is faster than 3 athlete. in the movie for an interest farhan akhtar looked back. the reality is milkha thought he cannot finish the 400m race .so he drop his speed. sohe lost the race. mind it milkha singh won helms trophy because he was the best 400m player.
@@tapaskumarhalder6197 Otis Davis and Carl Kaufmann both ran under the world record in this race. They were obviously the fastest athletes in this time. As for the Helms Trophy, I had to Google it and didn't even get much information about it. It's a small prize and it doesn't even say anywhere that Milkha Singh won it.

I saw Otis running in Manchester, UK shortly after the Olympics.

Milkha Singh, the legend... You made India proud...
Bro seriously 9 years ago are you still active?
I remember watching this on television: they flew the tapes from Rome to New York (before satellites). Great, exciting race. Those were the days.
Carl Kaufmann is my grandfather ☺️ I'm so proud of him! I wish I could have met him before he died ❤️😔😌🙏🏼
Really?
wow respect
@@manigill4868 no one cares
He run so brilliant at the end for the win he jumped to the rope also
Respect hope you're shining his legacy
Karl Kaufmann = einer der Besten zu seiner Zeit
Can you imagine what times those guys would run nowadays with all the tech we have - spikes, track surface, diet advice, sports science!!!!
He had less then 11 400m races under his belt before this!! Even more impressive! 👏
RIP, Otis Davis.
All of em have left us :\ RIP Legends
Actually, Otis Davis lived to age 92, passing on 14Sep24
@@alanmazursky6566 Wow! Thanks for the history! It makes me happy to see him rejoice at winning gold.
Cool video. It tells a great story in just 80 seconds.
RIP MY FRIEND
This track! Every time under 50sec would have been good.
Milka Singh in 400m Finale with a great chance...Rare Thing in Indian Sports Arena..
Very cool that his bib number was also 400. I hope he kept it

00:56 .. O GREAT MILKHA SINGH
Milkha Singh will live forever... Only a runner can understand what a 45 sec 400m is.

Maximum Respect!
Lots of respect for any guy who competes for a nation that didn't see him as equal.
What does that mean?Still bitchy after all these years.Get a life.
44,9 👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Such clean athletes...such genuine good sportsmanship...kaufmann's head did arrive first if horse racing rules were in effect then...his dive!
In running it's the breast. Today a few hundreds of a second would be between them. But a great race.
Milkha had a great chance!!
Those guys didn't hit the tape at the same time. The black guy won clearly.
The "black guy" is Otis Davis...one of the best ever.
well, he won that race..the white guy was clearly second.
coolro yes but the timing was different then
White Deutscher dived at the tape...fell to the track..at top speed...real guts!
Formidable !
great runer

Genial!
RIP Milkha Singh.
great!
when did milkha singh look back? I think that was the reason he lost right?
He never did. He just made lies about it afterwards and put that in a movie
