andrew kb I’m a cop and I agree with Bobby. I think we’re gunna see a shift back to more traditional police uniforms. The truth like with a lot of things is the best solution is somewhere in the middle. The new uniforms are being made of flex materials for comfort and range of motion. It would be nice if they could sew a durable hidden pocket or two in the shirt to maybe get the radio off ur belt is a good comprise.
Bobby Brady They don’t look like the military. Oh, unless you’ve never seen a soldier. Also this is flawed logic...there equipment is still there it’s just all clumped up on the belt which would look even more worrying because it seems like so much gear in one place.
Randy Finfrock was totally thinking that from my military days. If you have to tell anyone I’m in charge they don’t respect your authority and talk made shit behind your back and dislike a lot of what you say and do other then this Molle issue.

As someone who was once vary delinquent as a teenager and into my 20's, I can tell you that the police's ability to intimidate me was probably what saved me on several occasions.
Yup, and the mere presence of a uniformed officer is part of the force continuum... a certain level of intimidation must be present otherwise the whole thing doesn't work.
@@dubber1416 it's not just the fucking vests. It's the military vehicles, low profile cop cars, and their attitude towards the general public. The weight on the belt WILL affect the person wearing the heavy belt. After only about 10 yrs my hip and back IS paying the price. I think the vest helps in many ways.
My favorite part was when this chief called out all his younger officers on a news report and basically called them entitled. I'm sure these officers really appreciate this Chief and his leadership.
Well if they don’t like it they can always find another job! You do what your Chief tells you period! You don’t go in the Army and start telling generals what orders you are and aren’t going to follow! If you don’t like the Chief rules find another job!
You are probably not too far off with that assessment. In order for the upper echelon of police administration to get to the levels they do over the course of 25 to 30 years, they typically spend very little time working in the lower ranks. This is especially so in a large department with many layers in the rank structure. A couple years as a patrol officer then a promotion to sergeant. A couple years as sergeant and then a promotion to lieutenant. So on, and so on. They don't get to spend any appreciable amount of time in the lower ranks doing the actual policing. They never get the road experience a veteran patrolman gets. They get moved up to being someone's assistant paper shuffler and spend the rest of their careers having very little clue what it's like to be on the street.
EXACTLY. I grew up watching cops on tv, the actual show, take down crack heads by body slamming them straight to the pavement. amen. using the taser was the highlight of any episode we used to laugh so hard! I admit I had a violent gene or two but who doesnt.
I've always said that the more a person feels that they have to assert their authority, or basically saying "I'm the boss", the less qualified or competent they are to be in leadership.
That’s not what he said! He said he wasn’t going to allow that uniform that’s his decision as Chief! If they can’t follow orders they need to find another job maybe one where they can tell the boss what they will be wearing to work! But I doubt they will find it!
That why civil servants and politicians must be forced to take a civil service exam. Then present a resume of leadership roles they have held with in the community. They must also have at least 20 or more character references. I would also make it mandatory that the applicant go before a confirmation committee. Comprising of 9. Three people to discredit the candidate. Three people to prove the candidate a capable leader. Then three people who shall remain neutral but will vote for or against the candidate. If it is a politician who seeks an elected office. They would only be able to run for office after the have taken the civil service exam and receive a thumbs up vote from the civil service committee. I would also add that only the candidates who scored the highest in the exam should only be allowed to run for office.

True that the 5 year old sees that as awesome. However, those of us who know something about this country is that police should not look like soldiers and even being a military veteran should automatically disqualify you from being any sort of civilian law enforcement.
he made the right decision. especially during tyrannical times like this, we dont need cops to intimidate people and threaten to violate our rights. they have the exact same load-out whether or not they use a molle vest and most officers spend the majority of their shift sitting inside their car so back pain isnt a problem. when cops wear tactical vests and look like soldiers, they become more likely to violate peoples rights because they feel a sense of power over people.

This police chief thinks kids are scared of all the gadgets on their person? I beg to differ. Kids love this stuff. Other than the ones with parents that have trained their children to hate/be scared of police.
Even as a security guard I hate it when people come up to me and tell me their kid is being bad and ask me to scare them. Every one of those kids gets a high five, a smile, and a good chat. When the parents get mad I snap at them and tell them to stop teaching kids that uniforms mean they are going to be punished or that they should be scared of a person with a badge on. A person with a badge is the first person you want a kid to run to when they need help. Drives me nuts.
FFXPD took this same approach to thier fleet vehicles when they considered the Charger. They chose to not go with the charges cause they were to intimidating. I'll continue to were my outer vest for one of the best reasons, it's much easier to cool off in the summer, and it's more comfortable while in the car.
Children are naturally curious individuals, if they are scare then they have been taught to be by their parents. Kids go to cops more often than not because they believe them to be the good guy no matter what the cop has on his chest.

I’ve been a cop for over 30 years. The statement the chief makes “We have officers they have never been said no to before” really bothers me. If that’s the case, maybe the chief needs to look at who they’re hiring & retaining. If an officer had that type of attitude, they should have been weeded out during the academy or FTO. BTW, our department authorizes external carriers as an option, not mandatory.
Probably missed a chance for a reply but which style did you use do you agree or disagree with the chiefs opinion regardless of how it was presented?? Thanks for being a copper
I just retired after 28 1/2 years. I can tell you; at least in my department, in the last 10 years we've hired a lot of officers like that. Why?, because we and other departments across the country have lowered their standards and it is no longer important if they have the ability to do the job but whether or not you check certain boxes if you get my drift. As I have been told by those in our Command Staff, it is all about the "optics". This Chief is doing nothing more then placating to 1% that is the squeaky wheel... a true politician.
John Gross Cops “weeding out” other cops? 😂 Thanks for the laugh. Best joke you’ve told us so far. I, however, would love to see law abiding Police Officers “weed out” the Crooks On Patrol (COPs).
As a rank and file patrol officer myself, I don't agree with everything that the Toledo Chief said, but I don't agree with everything you said either. Having been in the military most of my adult life and now having transitioned to a Sheriff's Deputy, I agree with the Chief that the militarization of our law enforcement is not what we should be moving towards. We are public servants first and foremost. When dealing with the public, perception is a very important thing, especially when we have to deal with some of these SWJ idiots. Now, it should NOT matter what we look like as long as we do our job well, but that is NOT the world we live in and protect. As for the 5 yo child that's gonna be intimidated by the 6'3" officer with a TacVest, I call bullcrap on that. No kid is gonna be scared by the positioning of the officer's gear, those 5 yo kids are gonna think that our gear is cool, so I agree, total cop out. However, the Chief made a good compromise with allowing the suspender system for the duty belts. Having used one in the military I can say that it accomplishes the same goal as the TacVest. And these comments about "I am the King"...the Chief hasn't said anything out of line. He works for the citizens of Toledo and the Mayor. The officers of the department work, in turn, under him. Basic Chain of Command. Assertion of Command is necessary at times to enforce good order and discipline. A good leader uses both assertion AND influence to guide those under him. The "because I said so" is sometimes part of leadership, though it should NOT be the only thing. Sorry man, but I don't see anyone bullying with this story. Keep up the great videos and stay safe out there!
But don't you think that kowtowing to the SJW's and (trying to avoid name calling) let's just say, those who have vested interests in hamstringing the police by claiming that police "scare" them (which we all know is a hustle) is making the problem worse? - I mean, I'm not a cop, but as an observer of human behavior who's been around over 50 years, it has always seemed to me that authority should be polite, civil and decent while also presenting as a force to be reckoned with, should one decide to offend society. -- I work with kids .... and nothing about the officers' equipment scares those kids because (at least in my neck of the woods) kids know cops are the good guys. -- And just because in some cultures, single moms raise their kids to hate and obstruct the police, instilling in them the preposterous notion that cops are racist murderers, out to abuse a badge, I don't think that's a good reason to reduce the options of an officer, all so he can seem less "intimidating." - I think it's safe to say that the presentation of law enforcement should be, "Hey, here comes a good guy, a defender of society and the peace ... but should I get out of line, he looks like he and the system that backs him up will swiftly and if need be, forcefully ensure that I don't get far with my decision to be anti-social. - Prioritizing a "disarming" look over effectiveness is, IMHO, just giving in to a very ideologically dangerous and sinister movement within society.
As a veteran myself, I'm not sure I understand what exactly the "militarization" of law enforcement is? Yes, appearance is important for community outreach. But the last the I checked the difference between LEO and military was what their job entailed, not what clothes they wore. The issue is not our appearance, it's the media painting cops who have more equipment on them than an old Rusty revolver and a shiny black hat as "militarized". Wearing a plate carrier or a molle vest isn't exclusively military. In fact, my hunting gear comes with molle. It's just an attachment system. I think it's a disservice to paint us as militarized off of little more than aesthetic.
Personally I dont think either way is more intimidating I really havent ever noticed the difference. It doesn't look more militaristic in my opinion it literally just holds the gear in a different position.
@@redtra236 - I agree. I see it as just another hustle. If you work with horses, when they're getting to know you, they'll try to step into your space. If you move back and let them, that tells them they can test you. - Same in the human world.
@@2ManyNamesTaken Why don't the cops just follow orders blindly like they expect the rest of us to do? Why is there a culture of people who feel like the cops are just there to abuse their power, because they have been the victims of such power. I hope that you do have "good cops" in your neck of the woods but in the numerous places that I have lived and videos that I have seen, the police abuse their powers and violate the peoples rights most of the time. Why do the cops, prosecutors and judges have immunity when they trample someones rights? I thought that we all had the same rights and equal protection under the law?
I have seen police wearing those vests interact with children, even in my church, and unless they acted intimidating with them, they didn’t see them any differently than anyone else, vest or no vest. The vests also work to prevent injuries and spinal damage overtime. So wearing their gear on their belt would not only do nothing to improve their image, but actually cause actual physical harm to them.
My son is a deputy Sheriff who had to have spinal surgery after two years on the job. The Sherrif also believed that vests were too "military looking" but changed his mind allowed them, with my son in charge of selecting new gear. As all deputies carry both pistols and AR-15s they chose equipment that allows pouches for extra magazines. Glad he works for a department that cares.
Apparently the “chief” didn’t understand the acronym. Pass out some books so these people get an education. “MOLLE” is an acronym for Modular Lightweight Load-carrying Equipment. It is used to define the current generation of load-bearing equipment and backpacks used by a number of NATO armed forces, especially the British Army and the United States Army. They all have phones with the worlds largest encyclopedia at their fingertips. SMH...
To me the main issue is green vs blue. When the modern police was founded in the late 1800s by Sir Robert Peel, he insisted that the bobbies (British cops) only wear shades of blue, dark blue, etc to differentiate them from the army, which wore red. I don't like it at all when I see cops in the US wearing green like they are in the Army. Wear whatever tac vest you want, but don't wear green. In a republic like the US, we should have a clear and solid wall between police (domestic) and army (foreign wars).
I imagine old officers are probably more upset than the young ones. They are the ones who have been doing the job for years on end and probably don't appreciate their routine being changed for such frivolous reasons.
Dave Demo one of my co workers had to get surgery because all of his duty gear put a strain on a disk in his lower back. Now he wears a load bearing vest and he’s good to go. I think load bearing vests are great. Some people don’t want to embrace change.

No dog in this fight, but didn't different organizations start issuing and using the vest due to balancing the load out to prevent injury from having to carry heavier objects at waistline? Different experience, but I remember what it was like to be dressed in green running with a pistol belt with my crap bouncing around unsecure due to limited ways to fully attach it. Switching to the LBV made a significant improvement on mobility, functionality, and ability to have the adequate supplies on hand to do the tasks that were thrown at us in a training environment let alone real world applications. Just imagine the ridiculous waste of money involved, here. There goes everyone's raise and new equipment for the next ten years. But, hey. They don't look intimidating anymore. 🤷♂️
@Michael Gamble The "Tac vest" is the body armor and I saw three or four weapons. Their pistol, pepper spray, an expandable baton and the taser. And they do more than just write tickets. How many years have you been a LEO to tell them what they need to do their job?
Michael Gamble because writing tickets is all they ever do, right? And they have what, 5 weapons? OC spray, duty pistol, baton, taser & maybe a knife? But sure, exaggerate.
@Michael Gamble Yes you do if you are going make such asinine comments when you obviouslyhave no real idea what police officers do. And soldiers don't walk around war zones with tasers and pepper spray.
I guess my biggest gripe about the situation is if the vest helps an officer do their job and mitigate pain during their job then why are you taking equipment away from that officer!
well also a Tac belt is what most officers wear so why is a carrier vs- a Vest different its the same gear just localized in two different locations, hence why I also think this chief is stupid and I feel like you'd also agree with that point @Steve Siefelin
I wore a duty belt for 13 years and the result was horrible back pain and injury. I switched to the vest one year ago and it's been amazing to finally have hip and lower back relief.
I had the opposite experience. The vest caused back and shoulder pain. A properly fitted and distributed belt I believe is far better than putting everything on the front of your chest.
Sounds like some cops who work under him are spoiled children. He made a change to ppe that's it. He didn't ask them to modify their behaviour at all or anything.
He is in charge. Someone always is. I was not in law enforcement but I had many bosses over the years. Here is what I noticed: If you came to work when scheduled, did the work the boss gave you to do, and followed all the safety rules then you never had a problem keeping your job. By the way, some jobs were less desirable but nothing anyone could not do. And no one bothered you as you did the less desirable work ; those jobs did not last long and everyone ended up assigned them eventually.
Sir. You are correct. I’m a deputy in Arizona and we use the Molle vest. I’m my opinion the outer carrier looks better, it breathes better and my waist thanks me at the end of the day. Thank you.
Maybe the chief used the wrong word. Instead of “intimidating” maybe he should have said “alarming”. Example: if cops saw a civilian wearing a Molle vest and open carrying (which is legal) I suspect the cops would be alarmed.
The chief had no vest when he was a patrol officer. He noticed that his patrol officers like the vest and his morale destruction instincts took over. Why does the uber-concerned about intimidation chief wear a uniform?

That's usually the case in public service. The ones that lead never did. Like a participation trophy for them. They like it.

I view Sheriff > Police Chief since the latter is a lackey for the civilians who run the municipality, so I have to think the chief didn't let everyone wear such gear for so long and then suddenly roll out of bed and decide differently.
New headline: Police Chief makes uniform decisions based on feelings of five year olds.
Should change from five year olds to the feelings of the chief
I can't think of one time when I was 5 that I was afraid of the police, and I don't think a vest would change that. The only people afraid of a vest are people who want to shoot cops
@@averagewso Police are terrified if YOU wear a vest, are you saying they want to shoot all civilians? I get that some of them do (all ATF agents basically, though they love shooting dogs they will substitute with humans when dogs are unavailable). It seems double standard, I live in a state where its illegal to bear even a flintlock, so I'm pretty sure they would freak out at you trying to be safe (yet in the same sentence complain that you weren't wearing a seatbelt when they pulled you over). I don't get why anyone would be scared of you wearing anything from a bicycle helmet or a freaken Juggernaut suit when seemingly half the population is running around terrified with underwear over their faces, but oh no, you wear something that stops something actually dangerous and that's when people think you're crazy...

I would have to agree with you. First off as a USMC vet I want to say thank you to all our law enforcement officers out there across the country you have a difficult job and in time right now I couldn't imagine being in this profession. Know you are appreciated and there is still a lot of good Americans who support you. I would think that when it come to what you need to carry your tools you should use what works for you just like the trades everyone uses different styles of belts boxes bags etc. Be safe out there people and keep up the good work.
"I'm the Chief of Police, and I make the calls."
Hey you do outrank everyone in that department, but that doesn't mean you should shatter moral, personal preference, and blatantly disregard personal health just because someone looks a little fast.
its politics and optics. hes doing it for himself.
Or they could just quit, sue for health reasons, etc. He has orders he has to follow as well, consider new hires that will now look elsewhere, it all adds up.
@@Rekhan4242 It's not that black and white. If that was the case they wouldn't have a police force.
Could not agree more.
That’s when you leave that department on the spot and find another career or better department, I got out the field because of this kind of crap everywhere I looked.
(they should have been weeded out during the academy) Yes, in my class we started out with 33 and at graduation, only 8 of us graduated.
@@SR-dh1vj Agreed, and thank you for your 28 plus years of service. Hope you enjoy a long and pleasurable retirement.

Cops “weeding out” other cops? 😂 Thanks for the laugh. Best joke you’ve told us so far. I, however, would love to see law abiding Police Officers “weed out” the Crooks On Patrol (COPs).
Sounds like a control issue that the Cheif has personally.

Ah yes, when another Chief becomes more politician than officer.
-
I mean, I'm not a cop, but as an observer of human behavior who's been around over 50 years, it has always seemed to me that authority should be polite, civil and decent while also presenting as a force to be reckoned with, should one decide to offend society. -- I work with kids .... and nothing about the officers' equipment scares those kids because (at least in my neck of the woods) kids know cops are the good guys. -- And just because in some cultures, single moms raise their kids to hate and obstruct the police, instilling in them the preposterous notion that cops are racist murderers, out to abuse a badge, I don't think that's a good reason to reduce the options of an officer, all so he can seem less "intimidating."
-
I think it's safe to say that the presentation of law enforcement should be, "Hey, here comes a good guy, a defender of society and the peace ... but should I get out of line, he looks like he and the system that backs him up will swiftly and if need be, forcefully ensure that I don't get far with my decision to be anti-social.
-
Prioritizing a "disarming" look over effectiveness is, IMHO, just giving in to a very ideologically dangerous and sinister movement within society.

Same in the human world.
@@2ManyNamesTaken Why don't the cops just follow orders blindly like they expect the rest of us to do? Why is there a culture of people who feel like the cops are just there to abuse their power, because they have been the victims of such power. Why do the police have to fill a quota of inmates in the jails and prisons? I hope that you do have "good cops" in your neck of the woods but in the numerous places that I have lived and videos that I have seen, the police abuse their powers and violate the peoples rights most of the time. Why do the cops, prosecutors and judges have immunity when they trample someones rights? I thought that we all had the same rights and equal protection under the law?
What I heard was “my officers’ health is not important enough to change my mind about a weak public.”
Maybe they should start banning spoons when officers fail physicals too.
He seems very cocky about his job
This is just like banning certain types of stock on an AR
He sounds like he's on a power trip. Would not want to with with him
My son is a deputy Sheriff who had to have spinal surgery after two years on the job.
SMH...
I'm guessing he didn't like the vest because they didn't have a pouch for his tampons.
Personally, I feel safer when I see LEOs with MOLLE vests
thats because you dont carry a weapon because you want the police to defend your life for you instead of you defending your own life like an adult
Same. It makes it seem they are more ready for the job.
"I make the rules! No one else's opinion matters!"
Very effective leadership style here. The officers don't matter, just the chief of police.
This police chief is a perfect example of when you start to substitute with soy milk in your coffee.
Eric Thomas 😂😂😂😂
The vest also takes the weight of equipment off of the hips and onto the shoulders. This is a serious issue over time.
Luke Smith Sadly that police chief doesn’t deserve to be in the position he’s in.
Yeap...i need a hip replacment.
Holy shit.. that chief literally just had an "Ok Boomer" moment for that "some young officers never heard no"
Alex Martinez 😂😂😂😂🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂
I imagine old officers are probably more upset than the young ones. They are the ones who have been doing the job for years on end and probably don't appreciate their routine being changed for such frivolous reasons.
@@DaveDemo3 I highly doubt this chief was on patrol for very long, if at all.
Dave Demo one of my co workers had to get surgery because all of his duty gear put a strain on a disk in his lower back. Now he wears a load bearing vest and he’s good to go. I think load bearing vests are great. Some people don’t want to embrace change.
I actually live in Toledo Ohio and he actually isn't wrong most cops out here get away with alot of shit. Like a buddy of mine got arrested at the mall due to "public intoxication" after only drinking one beer from a restaurant that's inside the mall.all because the cop saw us laughing and having "too much fun" in the food court

As a resident of Toledo it does not matter where your gear is to me, it’s there anyway what’s a few inches matter. Nonsense the typical Toledo way.
Attitude > Appearances
It's not about moving it a few inches. It's about a duty belt vs. a tactical vest.

Being intimidating “Looking” as a police officer is a good thing in my experience. Being able to deescalate a situation by your appearance and not having to use force of any kind is exactly what the police department should want.
Yeah, last I checked, being intimidating can help deter crimes and violence. I mean, who’s going to want to screw with someone they know can kick their ass? Knowing that police intimidate people makes them feel safer because it makes them safer through deterrence

Spot on, Officer Mike. My experience in the Cdn Army, lo, those many decades ago, we were told that one salutes the rank of office; not the person. Salutes are mandatory; respect must be earned through leadership-ability.
The external vest is a great option and it really does help to aleviate injury and pain, which translates to longer careers and more importantly reduces sick call outs.
Btw.....That second guy is a total Yes man. We know which desk we can find him under. 😜
I would say he is a good example of how things appear is more important than fixing underlying issues. Or, he is that out of touch and needs to, look to more laid back departments, where a lot less is expected from officers on a day ro day basis.
That's crazy Stanislaus County Sheriff's department is switching to them.
He's being paid by the company that makes the other vest to switch over. It has nothing to do with the way the officers look wearing molle vest

Sharm you were right until you used the derogatory term "boomer". Agism is as bad as sexism, racism, etc.
Weather you like the decision or not. He was right. It is his choice to make. If the officers don't like the decision they have the choice to stay or leave.
I’m 44. I remember growing up in Tennessee and knowing the police officers in my community. They wore slacks, button up shirts, ties, and their hat. Their belts had a revolver, extra ammo, night stick, hand cuffs. Some had bullet resistance vests that were worn under their shirts. I live in Houston Texas. The cops in my community mirror what I looked like as a deployed Ranger. I don’t like it. I’m certainly not intimidated by them. I kind of feel sorry for them that they need so much crap. But hey, when you live in Houston and have cops that lie to get no-knock warrants and murder innocent people like the Pecan Park raid you kinda paint a target on your back.
Charles T well spoken !!!

Old school Chief who’s bent on being old school for the sake of being old school. Suspenders are a poor option for a load bearing vest. The belt never seems to stay in the same position. Also, all the weight of the belt goes right down onto your hips when seated.

Obviously Michael is counting all the bullets as individual weapons.
@@IratePuffin Why don't we just go ahead and let all of them drive around in tanks and carry RPGs while we're at it too, huh?
I guess you missed the part where he offered a solution. They are issuing duty suspenders which are supposed to accomplish the same thing.
Same....life saver. I don't have lower back pain anymore.

He’s the chief so he is in charge. And to be frank he really doesn’t owe his staff an explanation.
Thank you.
He makes that decision for his officers safety, from behind a desk, not out on the street
Maybe the chief used the wrong word. Instead of “intimidating” maybe he should have said “alarming”. Example: if cops saw a civilian wearing a Molle vest and open carrying (which is legal) I suspect the cops would be alarmed.
Joey Fernandez thank you !! A very good point !!!!! Very true,,,
