Spotting the fire engine on the bridge above the burn isn't real smart. Nor is allowing traffic to continue flowing across the bridge without first checking for structural integrity.
They knew exactly what they were doing, that's the difference between those that know what they are doing and those that don't. That was a very professional job by people that know that a little smoke from a trash fire is not likely to do any serious damage in the open, just don't do this in an enclosed space. that bridge will withstand much more than that little fire. Likely not even damaged at all. Do you know how a chimney works? One place where you might need to know is in a tunnel fire.
I can't believe that the Stockton Fire Department, the Stockton Police Department, the California Highway Patrol did not close the bridge. You have a fire beneath what appears to be an old bridge of what appears to be riveted construction. Someone needs to assess any structural damage due to heating of both the structure and the roadway. It would be better to err on the side of safety.
I am sure they will look at it, but it is not damaged because it acted like a chimney, where the heat is taken around the structure. In the time it burned, it did not get a chance to heat up enough to make it unsafe. Consider how much fuel could be put there by homeless people. (Not a lot).
The bridge was already structurally damaged, before the incident, as obvious as the damage to the cross member at the end of the bridge was. Luckily being a swing bridge, the entire weight of the bridge can be supported by the turntable, but the additional weight of the vehicles, especially the Semis, made their crossing the bridge exponentially more dangerous. The heat from the fire could have started the concrete deck spalling and result in an imbalance of weight and caused the bridge to collapse. Many people think that fire cannot truly damage a bridge, but look up the Atlanta I-85 bridge collapse, and if you find the raw video, you will see and head the concrete spalling , just before the collapse.
Even a concrete bridge can be damaged by a hot fire. Chemical fire in Dallas was one such case, and gasoline tanker another. Concrete splintered and shattered like glass exposing rebar.
The damaged cross member is not an integral part of the bridge. That damage is way old and has probably been inspected dozens of times since it happened.
That was my question too. As well as several other things done that I had my eyes wide open wondering WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU ALL DOING! This was handled so unsafe and the firefighters under the bridge with out mask. My heart still goes out to our first responders. Thank you for all you do!
WRONG: Rig placement, lack of Officer/IC 360 size-up, lack of mandatory hi-viz vest use (engineer at a minimum as he was in traffic), lack of traffic control, lack of proper PPE wear and use. RIGHT: Well they did manage water and not run out before the fire was out. So aside from the major safety violations the fire was extinguished and everyone went home in one piece. If I was the BC or station Captain and saw this video I'd have that engine officer on paper before the end of shift. This is not how a professional department operates. I've seen rural all volunteer crews take safety much more seriously. Lax operational safety at the minor incidents breads contempt for SOP's and then everyone wonders what happened when a FF dies at a bread and butter room and contents structure fire.
Everyone driving over a bridge that is becoming weaker as the fire heats up the steel. Traffic should have been stopped and not permitted to cross the bridge until an inspection and testing by a structural engineer was completed and the bridge structure was deemed to be safe for use. Bizarre.
