No one was catching Pond. That was the ex San Remo car with the highest bhp v6 ever developed on the works 6r4s. This bad boy had approx 520bhp! I know because a pal owned it until it was destroyed in a museum fire and I was blessed to be driven on deserted country roads by the owner who was still at that time a paid pro rally driver, though in group A at that time. He had driven works group B too and we were driving the tiny country roads we know because we live here.
Amazing experiences - that car literally threw itself forwards and upwards in a leap each time it touches down.. the tyres grab the tarmac and immediately happens again and again jumping at 140mph with the devil / acdc / mechanical magic all happening 6inches behind your head. What A brutal, beautifully efficient machine. My dream toy.

Had a ride along in PDP 694X owned by Steve Dinmes at the NEC as part of a Sporting Bears fundraiser.
Told him it was the fulfillment of a childhood dream so we went for a bit more spirited drive than usual. At the time I'd been in top spec Ford Cossies but the Metro was so special

For me, and thousands of others, Group B will always be the pinnacle of rallying.
Lightweight cars, lots of power, muscular sounding engines, drivers visible in the cockpits, and sheer speed. There was huge interest around the world, and even my mum could name a few drivers!
I’m glad to have experienced the thrill of spectating, and I even had an amazing ride in an RS200, driven by John Taylor. Great years, I was fortunate.

I helped prepare this car at the Austin Rover plant in oxford, fantastic memories of these days testing and preparing for events, went on a recce in France with Pondy and Rob. oh and David Appleby who
brought one of the works cars when it shut down. Shane Hone or kiwi is my name.

Based on that marvellous outfit, Tony Pond could not only have selected but probably performed the incidental music!

@@davecommentator It's going to be library music from De Wolf, Parry Music or something similar. You'll probably find it on Sonne Image UA-cam channel.

How Russel Brooks was able to challenge the stage times of the Rs 200s,and 6R4 ,s losing average by 2-4 seconds and even matching them at some stages is beyond me!

Excellent point. Brookes was so understated but so efficient with speed! Also, no mention of John Haughland. All the lead drivers would admit they were relieved when he always turned up in the 100(+)bhp Skoda!

Literally i was born 1986 so sadly missed the best decade the 1980s , grew up in disappointment 90s Terrorist 00s , recession 2010s and Pandemic 2020s , I wonder what hell awaits us next lol , the people born from 1945 had the best time as they grew up in the 50s 60s 70s and 80s just much better times , I know the tech was rubbish compared to 2023 but people were friendlier , no mass flow of illegal immigrants , everyone knew everyone else , it was a safer UK than now.
