Magic loop! I use them for everything from a flat knit afghan to gloves - including the fingers. I always had problems with dpns slipping out of the stitches especially when I had to set my knitting aside to answer the door or take care of a child issue or answer the phone. Magic loop is just easier!
I love magic loop. I am a loose knitter and the metal dpn’s slip out and fall, the bamboo ones are too grabby (sweaty hands?). I don’t like juggling all those points around in my hands. Magic loop keeps it simple, one needle in each hand. I go up one size for sleeves.
Hi Kim I only knit Magic Loop. I did try double pointed needles, but they were too finicky. I only knit with magic loop with 40” cords. I decided that if I only use 40” cords, I only have to have one needle per size. I don’t I have many needles of a size with the 40” cord. I don’t like the very short cords that some knit sock with. You should use what works for you. Great video.
Oh how beautiful that blue and grey roving was! I hope you dye more wool in blues and greys again soon. I’m enjoying the Learn to Spin Yarn class and am eager to get to take advantage of some of your amazing dye work one day soon. Thank you for the podcasts. I love them and am learning so much!
BTW, I've never liked magic loop, so I fully support your move back to dpns! I also do a thing on hats where I just pull out a loop of cable half way around, but don't divide the sts where I am knitting, so there is never a chance for a gap to form. For the cabled slippers I am working on I work the cable rounds on dpns, then use a 16" needle for the rest rows...in my case it is mostly for hand comfort, but I've also noticed how much tighter I can knit with magic loop on small circumferences.
Love the colored roving! I’m a dbl point mitten maker. I’ve read through magic loop directions a few times over the years and figured it wasn’t worth the brain space. First socks more than 50 yrs ago. Old dog. To heck with new tricks. I do switch between English and continental in case of soreness, but I’m a loose knitter so not much bother either way. Lovely spot you have there!!!
Just found your podcast - what fun! Now I need to binge watch from the beginning. Cheers from a northern neighbour in BC. I tried magic loop - really tried - but I'm back to my dpns
I never have liked Magic Loop, although I have done it. My preferred method of making small circumferences is 2 circular needles, usually 24", (socks, etc ). I usually use DP's to finish the top of a hat, or work thumbs or fingers of gloves, but that's usually all. I always make 2 socks at the same time on 2 circulars, with a short-row heel instead of a heel flap/gusset style.
I learned how to do magic loop when it was the big new hooha way back when, but found it to be too fiddly and went back to my dpns. But hey, always fun to try new things out :D Absolutely loving your experimentation with color in rovings btw! I’m in Fiber Club, and can’t wait to see what’s next.
So much gorgeousness in this episode! You know, I clicked through to look at the blue/grey fiber to fully appreciate it's color as soon as I saw the newsletter, and it was already sold out! But those colors, AND the green/pink "cones" of roving were both so pretty. Love the views of the river and the PLANTS in the cottage! Fun to see all of your sweaters - I missed, were they all hand-spun? Have been wearing my Jacob sweater every day...
Wonderful video! Wonderful projects! I agree, I learnt on circulars and magic loop for all my projects... I've just switched to dpns and I LOVE them so much more. I'm even a bit emotional about it because I taught myself and I wish I'd had someone to teach me dpns a couple of decades ago. I went from straight needles to circulars, to dpns. How amazing is it that we have sp much choice?
I'm so glad you found me. Thank you for sharing. And I'm so glad you found dpn's!!! Good for you for teaching yourself but I get that all the extra help would have been lovely!
I just do not like magic loop. I hate how it pulls at the stitches at the place where the cable folds. I use Chiaogoo needles so the cable is really flexible and I’ve tried it with 2 sets of cables/needles but it still pulls at the stitches terribly. Maybe because I learned on and am comfortable with DPNs but seriously, I just avoid magic loop if I can. I recently had some project where the cast on was done with magic loop but I tried it with DPNs but nope! Didn’t work so had to go back to magic loop so it does have its place. Always good to have lots of tools in the tool box!
I recently bought 400g of carded wool and am excited to start spinning it. The concern for me is that I just learned to spin, have gotten pretty good with it but I only spin on a drop spindle. My question now is: how do you spin soft fluffy lightweight (woolen spun I guess) on a drop spindle? Is it even possible? All my other spins are pretty tight & dense which is fine for wrist warmers and such but I’d like to use this new wool for a bigger, less dense project.

Forgot to mention…. That hand-spun sweater in those natural tones is gorgeous!!!
Thank you!
I never liked magic loop for lots of reasons, and have gone back to dpn 100% in the last few months.
I always preferred dpns to magic loop, maybe because learning to knit socks with dpns was such a proud moment for me! :)
Makes sense! Miss you!
I'm not a magic looper. Love my dpns and that magic clanking sound while changing advancing to the next needle.

Spinning overlooking the river is so peaceful. I would love a chance to do that!
I love dpns. I never got the hang of magic loop. I love your episodes Kim!
Thank you!

100% always knit, spin, crochet, make with however and with whatever works for you!!!

I was a double pointer, now a pretty solid magic looper. Probably good to use both for body ergonomics. Beautiful rushing river!

Do you watch the Knitting PT? She really helps with ergonomics for knitting. If you are having pain they are super helpful with techniques.
I'll mention her for sure

that mitten pattern is always big so it should be fine. And I have only used magic loop once and did not like it.
Loving my second one on Dpn's even more!
i do not like magic loop at all! i’m. double point needles!
