that's exactly the issue. You ask them which they want to have and then you have them open up a surprise with the opposite inside. They totally think that you specifically chose the opposite of what they wanted just to spite them, or that you sided with the sibling who said they wanted the opposite.
plus all the frills, fuss, and filming. They're just overwhelmed and the prospect of having another baby in the family finally seems real. That is seriously a lot of emotion to expect a five year old to manage like half these kids were set up for a meltdown from the get go. It's not even about "not wanting a brother" or whatever.
add in that they're watching everyone around them be excited for the new baby; that can feel scary to a kid because they wonder if they're going to never have the love or attention on them again.
like not to be extra, but I'm not surprised at all that these kids start wailing in this circumstance.

The fact that so many are so annoyed or even angered by the disappointed children says how negative emotions are still stigmatized. They'll get over it, but that emotion needs to come out one way or another.
