Many people are turning to a more minimalist life as they begin to realize that seeking a highly materialistic life does not lead to happiness. Many people are seeking a life of less possessions and less spending, and are finding that it is making their lives richer. Minimalism, to me, means more than just living with less, but it is about developing habits that lead to a life of contentment.
In this video, I share 5 different minimalist habits I practice in order to live a rich life.
1. Emotional Intelligence
As humans, we all experience different emotions that affect how we feel, act, and behave. And although we can't avoid these emotions in our lives we can control them to an extent. Emotional intelligence “The ability to identify and regulate our own emotions as well as understand and influence the emotions of others.” When you focus on identifying emotions and let them pass, it ultimately leads to a richer life as you are able to look at negative experiences in a positive way. Also, it allows you to shape a better world around you as you are able to impact the behavior of others in a positive way.
2. Practicing Patience
In many of my videos, I have mentioned that I spent about 3 years of my life in South America. The biggest lesson I learned in South America is patience because in South America, nothing ever goes to plan. Patience allows you to live with less stress and anxiety because you don't focus on things that are out of your control. When you practice patience in your life, it makes your life richer as you don't spend too much time worrying about all the things you can't control.
3. Being Present
We live in a very busy society where we have calendars full of events, deadlines to meet, and constant distractions. And because we live these busy lives we are often living more in the future than in the present. In the chaos of life, it is important to take moments where you don't worry too much about the future and do activities that allow you to be present. When you focus on being more present, it leads to a richer life as you gain more experiences and memories.
4. Getting Rest
One of the biggest lessons that I have learned since being my own boss and having more responsibilities is the importance of rest. We live in a world where rest is often discouraged and a sign of weakness; however, rest is the key to productivity. When you take moments doing calming activities like reading, walking, or napping, you are able to come back to a task with a clearer mind. And when you develop the habit of taking breaks, it leads to a richer life as you are more calm and productive.
5. Gratitude
I believe that minimalism is about being content with what you have instead of living a life of constantly wanting more. The best way to achieve this lifestyle is by practicing gratitude in your life. And this means recognizing all of the things you do have and being grateful for those things. When you practice gratitude in your life, you will realize that the materialistic portrayal of being rich is just an illusion. And when you are grateful and content with what you have, you will be the richest person on planet Earth.

What's another habit that has enriched your life?
Thanks for the great video! Great question.
I take time to slow breathe as often as I can, and concentrate on my breathing. And do you know what? When I’m breathing I’ll say to myself that this breathing is me. I am flowing in and out of my lungs like a wave. Just try it, Mr. Williams and see if it calms you and gets rid of all the stress.
Not buying things on credit, especially new vehicles. Paying cash for a good used car. Eliminates a lot of stress!
Drinking cold water 💧 often. Slowing down. Those make me feel good and I don't like being rushed.
@Sonia I live alone and this is so important. I light a little candle too and always use a place mat
@Sonia I love this, Sonia. I love how you make your meals although alone special and appealing. After reading your comment, I'm going to reintroduce meals at the table too. A great way to treat ourselves kindly. Thank you for the inspiration, Sonia, as I too live alone.
"Slow living" I live this now since learning its value after my cancer journey. A whole year to lay in bed and get a new perspective on what my days consisted of up to that point. I don't have a ton of money, in fact I'm still catching up slowly but surely from a year of no income (it's own lessons). Despite my financial status at the moment my life is so rich!
Well said ! I hope that your life finds new light and happiness with each day on the journey of recovery .
I too learnt the value of slow living during Covid period. Also Covid period helped me see the difference between who are the toxic people and who are authentic. I truly value calm living style now.
My son has enriched my life. He reminds me of what we ought to see. He loves going to the woods and blowing bubbles. He loves sticking his hand out of the car window when it rains and running through the snow...😢😢 I love you Olly.
I used to live outside the city for 11 years on an acreage. I loved it, due to the fact growing up on the farm, had the quiet and space. But on the farm, we were there to make a living, so all the equipment we had and work we did was to make the place run. An acreage is work after your job is done. Riding mowers, quads, etc, etc. And all the maintenance of that equipment. I moved back into the city 4 years ago, and all that stuff got sold. I went from 5-6 engines to maintain and items to fix, to now none. Less stress when you own less stuff
I think learning patience in spending money - learning to not use money to get stuff done instantly - is a skill all of us need to learn. Thanks for another great video Agustin and for drawing my attention to patience & rest.
Yessss. Patience… You’re right. This has been my biggest nemesis as a highly impulsive person.
I buy everything I possibly can secondhand at thrift stores. I don't feel deprived at all, actually the opposite, finding treasure is so much fun and my home is so cosy and inviting. Yes, I might have to wait to get the object I'm after, though I've found this has made me incredibly patient and it reminds me that I can always get what I need, it just takes time.
I liked your last quote. A variation on it I have heard goes: “Wealth is not about having everything you want, but wanting everything you have.”
Hi Austin! Well for one, I have a gratitude journal I write in it daily, reminding myself how grateful I really am. Coming from a family where “worth” was always measured by how much money you have, how big your house was, etc, and me running up credit cards to try to match…I now know that my fabulous daughters, a successful nursing career, a lifetime of “ still” playing piano professionally, and still able to hike ( yes with arthritis lol) and 100% debt free, this great grandmother says Austin, continue your brilliant videos! And as I’ve said, they belong in the schools! Blessings 💕
Hello everyone, I love listening to music while cleaning, exercising and doing chores. Music makes me happy. Paying a subscription to listen to music is very affordable.
I do listen to music too when doing chores or motivational speaking.
We are building a Japanese garden. We have numerous pathways around our property. Those pathways are so relaxing to wander around. I was going to talk about this cabin we rented. It was under $100/night and is amazing. But the Japanese garden attracts birds and other creatures. It's so calming.
Really enjoying your videos Augustine. I’ve already been onboard with minimalism for about 5 years, but your videos are just great reminders of all the benefits that a simple, slow life provides. And your videos are very calming. By the way, I’m 2/3 through the book Shantaram. You were right. Just excellent! Great story and amazing writing. Keep up the great work!
The habit of communication. It’s especially powerful in personal relationships.
Minimalism = FREEDOM. 🎉🇺🇸
My habit is trying to make people laugh and (in my craft tutorials especially) trying to show people an honest account of what "normal" looks like. Have fun, see mistakes as lessons, use the supplies you have, don't just curate them.
Hi Austin, I love your videos! I so get your way of thinking and agree with your views of modern life. Thank you ( All the way over in Derbyshire England) xx
Derbyshire? Sounds very English with funny accents! Haha, thanks for watching and supporting!
Great video! Learning patience has helped me tremendously in my life. A "habit" that helped me is learning to build community no matter where I am.
I noticed the same thing when I visited Northern Thailand. They are so much happier.
Thanks for sharing your experience in South America. I enjoyed hearing how they handle everyday life!
talk about minimalism or downsizing in books, I think many people have lots and want to know how to downsize (books specifically!) your vids are great! thanks Austin
Despite being a frugal minimalist I sometimes engage in emotional spending. I tell myself I have the funds but all I do is borrow from other budget categories. My Dad used to say "Borrow from Peter to pay Paul and from Paul to pay all" So true✌🏾
Thank you for all your hard work making these videos. I have learned a lot from them. I have changed so many things in my life for the better. I feel so relaxed and have less stress. Loving it! ❤🙂
Excellent video! I took notes. One of your best yet, Agustin! 🙂
Just found out your channel today! Enjoying it a lot!
The other day I walked into a big box store where people were rushing around and started wanting to move faster myself. I walked out instead.
Thanks, man! Love from the Philippines!
Very good as always!
Great video, thank you xx
Thank you, Augustino for your wise words. For me, patience is sometimes hard to keep, but i try.... What i also do, is, live and let live, so i do not eat animals,as i love them all, not only cats and dogs ;-)
This is a subject that I wholeheartedly support. I try to live life as relaxed as possible. I have recently purchased a new vehicle, but it is a great value in today's market and it is fuel efficient. I have plans for it to improve my lifestyle. Material items can bring value to your life, but don't allow them to control it. My new vehicle can enable me to be more active in my life, however I have to make that choice to become a more active person.
Thank you Austin for another beautiful video. I enjoy them all but this is one of my favourites.
Good and insightful video! Thanks for making it.
Your videos are amazing, I swear!
I appreciate it!! Means a lot!
Thank you for your videos. I retired this past Jan. Your videos are teaching me to be more frugal. I really like your spirit.😊
Love this so much. Thank you
Hello Agustín... agree with you. We latinos living in our countries are happy living slower happy life. We work hard and play hard. Que tengas lindo fin de semana. Saludos desde la ciudad de México.
I was in labor one time and headed to the hospital in a calm manner. A woman cut my husband off to get onto the freeway and the moment we had to slam on the breaks, my body tensed up and I felt like I was about to have the baby then and there. Don't be in a rush, people, especially near a hospital.
I am learning to cook. I love turning flour into bread for a bag of tomatoes into tomato sauce. I love trying more flavors and eating clean.
Very insightful video thank you!
Such a good man.. Wonderful video. Thank you, friend. 🤗🌞
thank you
Thank you as always 😃
One of your best videos yet! Well said
Thanks!
Good video, Austin 👍
Como siempre tienes razon con lo que dices! I love your videos they are realistic and they open people's eyes 👀 😍. Gracias Augustin 😍 nos vemos chico.
Excellent, my friend. You sound like professional therapist haha. Good job and good content 👍
i have discovered now in my late 50s that rest and sleep are so important for mental health after a very busy week
On point!
GREAT CONTENT 🙂 👍🏼 WELL DONE ❤
Thank you 🙏🏽
Our body always gives us guidance. I allow myself periods of Niksen (the Dutch concept of doing nothing) and that has greatly enriched not only my physical health but many other aspects of my life as well.
This video inspired me to live in the present moment. Thanks
Excellent video 🏴
this is a great video austin
Thanks!
🔥 Keeping up with Augustine. 🔥
Great work, here ! 👍
Thanks!
Wow, thank you so much!
Love your vids - they are filled with so much creativity and angles that people would never look at. It's how my brain thinks too :) The thing that has made my life richer is not chasing money/worrying about trying to keep up or obtain the level of financial wealth other people have. I value my body, mental and spirit so I won't trrade/not prepared to do what other people do and trade to have those things. I love being frugal also hahaha
:) Keep up the good work
Thanks, Maddie!
Great habits!!
Nailed it once again ❤️❤️
I appreciate your content ❤
True wisdom my friend ❤to answer your question: listen to my inner voice
You save more, and don't buy things you don't really need, just buying on emotions and impulse and that material item just goes in the garage, closet or rental storage (then wastes more money).... You'll need the needed funds in your future self that you won't have because money wasn't well spent and saved.
"....the police, the fire department, and the paramedics...." Got it! Love this one Austin. Cheers.
Another great video!
Thanks!
Yes,rest is very crucial for a productive life,it's about, go,go,go,burnout is real. Also patience Is the key to life,im an Aries very impatience, I learn to take things less seriously, n let go.My life has getting easier.
Amen! Count our blessings 🙏🏻♥️
It really matters. Are you happy? What do you need more of? What is really importand? I have struggled so much with food. Now we are trying to just buy the foods we like at the grocery store. Things to make our life easier and its not more expensive then we where spending before. Less stress can help also to feel happier. It takes so much time to change things or to know what feels good. You need to experiment.
Sir salamat sa mga video mo dahil sayo sobrang nabago ang aking pananaw sa buhay.
Salamat! Natutuwa akong nakakatulong sila sa pagpapabuti ng iyong buhay!
Obrigado 🇧🇷🇧🇷
Just to let you know, you speak great Spanish. As a Spanish speaker myself, I feel very proud when others speak. Buen dia, chico!
what a wise young man you are.
Living with Gratitude, 😊.. #WalkwithWisdom or #RunToDaylight
Hello fellow Coloradan! Your videos are priceless!
Howdy!
Oh I love this one. Very spiritual. 🧡 🐪
Wearing a black T-shirt. Haha!! Love it.
i'd say the emotional intelligence (at least the example you pointed out) is about controlling your actions/reaction based on your emotion. It's fine to feel your feelings, and we honestly don't have much control over our emotions, but we can control how we react based on our emotions!
I take notes while I listen to you share your nuggets of wisdom but I can not not acknowledge how good looking you are. Im just being objective here. Your haircut is clean cut, you skin is so clear, your face structure is proportioned well. 😅 Just my observation.
Thank you for all of your efforts in making your videos. It’s full of value. All the best to you! 🎉
haha, thanks! Everything looks better on a camera though!
❤😊 thanks!
Thank you!
Great video, I feel content to live a minimalism life but my husband doesn’t and I get frustrated bcuz he is wasting a lot of money. Help please to deal with my frustration.
Saludos de una argentina en Texas! Que bueno que quieras a Latinoamerica. Eso te hace mejor persona definitivamente
Being from NY makes slow living seem almost impossible ..always in a rush..no time to smell the roses..
I went to NYC last month and it is a pretty stressful place. In a way it feels like you're in a cage a bit as outside of Central Park, there is really no nature and feeling of being able to breath!
Are you in Ecuador or Colorado? Please let us know. Thank you for all your videos. So smart you are!
Colorado!
Hello Agustin, I have money at home and I want to keep it in a credit union or any safer and better place than a regular bank, I don't want to keep my recent savings in my apartment, it’s not secure here, what options do you know of and could you recommend me? please and thank you!
Thanks for sharing this! Recently I have started feeling exhausted and I figured the reason being I want everything so quickly! Just to suggest everyone reading it to go slow even if you are starting today ! 😊
Now you need to come to Brazil! And visit us! :D
One day!
You’re so wise
I think "Nos Vemos Chico" means we'll see each other later young man" or something close to that.
What are you looking upto your right for
You say some very wise things. Whence come these things at such a young age?
Smart observer
A question I have is how you mentally stay strong when you achieve the goal of freedom, flexibility and slow living.
I had a business for 8 years and had a life no one else had…. I also was extremely lonely and depressed because I didn’t have people in my life that had freedom to enjoy all that time with. I also didn’t have a sense of purpose.
So my question is- if you are able to achieve this young… how do you find that community that isn’t with people older and retired?
I’m 36 and my husband said most of my friends are in their 60s and I need to make more friends my age. Th challenge is- the people my age don’t have time to travel
Yeah, what I've learned from working for myself is that you have the freedom and flexibility, but you are still bound to society's rules. So even though I have all the time, I still have to conform a bit to the normal working hours and other people's schedules. I think there are pros and cons to both the independence and being bound by a job. You just have to choose what's best for you because you can never have it all.
❤
Ouch! Low emotional intelligence! You made me think. O no. I will definitely work on it! Especially with the taxi's we have in South Africa!
❤❤
I'm Latin American, born and raised and trust me, we aren't the happiest LOL. Anywho, love your content so much. ❤
haha, thanks!
Gorgeous hair (I'm a barber)
Gracias!
No Vemo Chico means... I don't see the boy. Do you pronounce the s? ....or no?
I'm attempting a Venezuelan accent, haha. I always got a kick out of how coastal accents don't pronounce the "s."
@@ElAgustin love your videos ❤
