Add this guy to my top 5!!! No gimmicks and it wasn’t like an infomercial for some product! Just a guy spreading his knowledge of a craft and that’s what I like to see!
Seems like I get two types of comments, your voice is soothing or your voice is too soft and annoying. I guess I can't please everyone. Anyway, thank you very much, and the fact that you liked the video is great.
You know its funny, I really didn't have a good reason for wanting to build a skateboard, other than a mild mid life crisis, but when I saw The Shop Apprentice and how happy he was, the whole world and everything in it made sense.
Watching you make your skateboard made think about the skateboards I used to build back in the mid 60’s. That’s when skateboarding first became popular. Today’s skateboards are allot safer with the wide truck tires, we only had a hard composite type truck tires like what was on roller skates back then.
Hey Mike, your not that old, my oldest son is 33, and he skated a lot, this gave me the idea to build them a new skate! And yes Blink 182 was a group he liked, like No Use For a Name, Green Day....Great video like always, and thanks for the idea!
Every single video of yours is even more interesting from another. How do you do this? I think the apprentice inspires you a lot, doesn't he? I think that is a hidden trick of your success. Well done keep it going, please
Thank you very much. Maybe I'll included the story in a video some time, but my shop apprentice is the reason I started my UA-cam channel, so in a way he is the key to my success.
This is a great video, my niece and I are going to try this. If you don't have a vacuum sealer, what would you suggest to just to get the curve for the long boards
They make hand pump operated vacuum bags. They are less the 50 bucks I think. So that's an option. If you don't want to go that route, you will need male and female bending forms and a bunch of clamps.
I can just imagine how cool my kids would think I am if i could make them a skateboard. haha You make it seem totally achievable Mike! Just gotta figure out the vacuum press situation...
Thank you Josh. Look up Lee Valley vac press kit. You can get a bag or two and a pump for under 100. Plus it will work for other small projects. Give a skateboard build a try, it really is a quick and fun project.
Ahh reminds me of the 70s we would hit the parking garage downtown and race down 7 floors until we get cough by security ,the boards we use where more like a log with wheels ...lol
Thank you! I Wish. I'd have to charge too much. If I could make them a hundred at a time, I may be able to get the price to a reasonable point, but a couple at a time, just take too long.
First Jonathan puts out a humidor video now you’re putting out a skateboard video? Y’all are making sure I know what I’m doing! Veneer work is so tedious I find sadly.
Its an Amana cutter and bearing set. Part number 61292 plus the matching bearing. My shaper has a 1" spindle so I use a 1" to 1 1/4" reducer. Overall is a really nice cutting tool.
If you don't have a wide belt, using the planer with a sled will work. The other option is to find a small local shop with a wide belt and rent time. I sand stuff for a ton of small time makers in my area. 63 and still on a longboard is awesome. I hope thats me.
They are not structural. You could easily make a board with only the 1/8" plywood layers. Its just a question of how many layers is the right amount for your weight, which comes down to personal preference.
Damn! Where did you get that monster bit for the shaper? Do they make something like that for routers? Also, I've looked for vacuum kits and they are really expensive. Can you link to one that's affordable? God bless.
The shaper cutter is from Amana. They make all manner of flush trim bits for routers, nothing even close to the shaper cutter though. Look up white side router bits. They have a few innovative flush trim bits. Here is a link to a more affordable vac kit. www.leevalley.com/us/wood/page.aspx?p=51167&cat=1,43314&ap=1
Thank you Barbara. I wish I had an answer, guys who do good work are hard to find these days. The current market seems to reward speed and lower quality vs finer craftsmanship. Unfortunately, I don't do long distance deliveries of large projects. Smaller projects, I don't mind shipping.
Hey man if you're fifty years old and do five ollies a day just to "stay in the game" - like this middle earther - you can call yourself an old dude that shouldn't be riding a skateboard. 😎 Until then - keep on truckin'. ps - I'm definitely making one of these!!
The Boardroom is my incredibly awesome, totally hilarious name for my wood shop. I say it like its something we all know because its a joke thats supposed to be obvious.
They're both a type of skateboard. What you're referring to as a "skateboard" is a double kick board. Cruiser boards were the original skateboard. Longboards are just as much skateboards as double kick boards.
Add this guy to my top 5!!! No gimmicks and it wasn’t like an infomercial for some product! Just a guy spreading his knowledge of a craft and that’s what I like to see!
Wow, thank you very much. Thats my style, just show what I know.
Great video Mike! So much fun and we had such a great time with you, the Mrs. And the apprentice!
Thank you Jonathan. It was a pleasure having you guys out. Lets do it again sometime.
Best part about this video that included Katz-Moses is he didn't try to sell us something, infomercial style. Love your work Mike!
Thank you.
I love the way you made your bent tamplate. Very easy and simple for an even curve. Thanks
Thank you.
The Shop Apprentice was pleased as Punch! It's a great thing to have this type of video of him.
He was so excited. That is a very special moment I was lucky to catch on camera.
Woodworking aside, Mike Farrington has the most soothing voice on the internet! Another great video.
Seems like I get two types of comments, your voice is soothing or your voice is too soft and annoying. I guess I can't please everyone. Anyway, thank you very much, and the fact that you liked the video is great.
Well Mike, the big smiles from your son at the end of the video says it all. Best apprentice ever. Great work again.
You know its funny, I really didn't have a good reason for wanting to build a skateboard, other than a mild mid life crisis, but when I saw The Shop Apprentice and how happy he was, the whole world and everything in it made sense.
Now I see my problem of why I can't stay on the board. I'm not wearing rain boots like the apprentice. Great job!! It made his day.
Ha! The boots are key.
Mike your the man! the details the description the process the flow of your style and the work is just flawless. Defiently top notch !
Thank you very much.
Was never a fan of skateboards, was a inline skater myself. But this right here inspired me to try and build one. Great video
Thats great to hear. I think you will have fun building one.
Watching you make your skateboard made think about the skateboards I used to build back in the mid 60’s. That’s when skateboarding first became popular. Today’s skateboards are allot safer with the wide truck tires, we only had a hard composite type truck tires like what was on roller skates back then.
Technology has really helped skateboarding. These were fun to build.
Hey Mike, your not that old, my oldest son is 33, and he skated a lot, this gave me the idea to build them a new skate! And yes Blink 182 was a group he liked, like No Use For a Name, Green Day....Great video like always, and thanks for the idea!

Nice Video.... I'm sooo glad that Katz & yourself teamed up or I wouldn't have found your channel as soon as I did.
Thank you. Great to have you onboard.
Well, that project kept things rolling right along.
Nailed it.

Way to go dad with the shop apprentice.

Nice job guys, shop apprentice seams satisfied with your work 👍
Ha! Thank you.
Don't think you are too old to skate.. i started in 1979, and i'm still shreddin'.. :) Yup.. i turn 50 next year.. :)
Nice, age is just a number. Keep at it!
@@MikeFarrington 52 .. and still shredding!.. had a motorcycle accident last year, but i now use my 27" board for Therapy!
@@JanBinnendijk Love it, I'm trying to stay fit so I can keep at it as well.

I will do a shop tour at some point. I just haven't had the time yet.
Yes please, your shop looks awesome!
I was thinking the same thing in the last video of yours I watched.

@@MikeFarrington Amazing! I didn't know LV had a small kit like that. We have a LV locally so I will check that out, thanks Mike!

What shaper cutter reducers and bearing are you using on the delta shaper?

I’m here to kick ass, great shirt!
Ha! Thank you. I have gotten some weird looks from people trying to figure out what it says.
....and if you don't have a wide belt sander. Old is 63 and longboarding. You still look young my friend.

Awesome video! Structurally, how important are the veneer layers? I feel really bad using an amazing piece of wood and covering it with grip tape lol
They are not structural. You could easily make a board with only the 1/8" plywood layers. Its just a question of how many layers is the right amount for your weight, which comes down to personal preference.
Which Glue did you use ?
Titebond 3.

8.5 is kinda small for a longboard most are from 9-10 inches
After making a few of these over the years I agree.
What sander are you using in the vid?
Its a Mirka Ceros. They don't make it anymore, the newer ones are called Deros I think. They make some really good sanders.
Love blink
Totally.
How would a person in another part of the country find a quality craftsman like yourself? Or will you deliver my new kitchen to New Hampshire?
Thank you Barbara. I wish I had an answer, guys who do good work are hard to find these days. The current market seems to reward speed and lower quality vs finer craftsmanship. Unfortunately, I don't do long distance deliveries of large projects. Smaller projects, I don't mind shipping.

Mirka Ceros, its no longer made. I think they make one called the Deros now.

What ...!!! No likes until now ...!!! What is wrong with you people ...??? The only logical response to this build is a big (like) .

so how old are you 85? come on. i am 45 and i still skate.
great work man.
you are as old as you feel .
Thank you. I agree, you are only as old as you feel.
Why is it called the boardroom???? He says it like it's something we all know about....but I don't get it??

Skateboards and Longboards are 2 different things... the term is not some new fad

Betwen the Hammer and the Anvil........ nice Judas Priest reference \MM/
Thank you Doug. You picked up on that quick! Its a great song.
its my favorite band..im going to Portland tomorrow and they are having something this weekend called Headbanger Con i may have to check out ha
