The pipes sound nice without being obnoxiously loud. To answer your question, I think that it is fine that you do not make a shift through the turn. That practice gives you one less thing to think about and allows you to concentrate more on properly executing your maneuver while watching for other drivers and other hazards. Thanks for the ride. Very pleasant bike.
I really love how these VT700's were basically maintenance free bikes with hydraulic valve lifters and no need for valve adjustments. Whereas the newer generation VT750's, like my brother in law's 2001, went to mechanical lifters and thus require routine valve adjustments. I like my hydraulic lifters. :) I own a 2003 Harley Sportster and a 1997 Honda Pacific Coast 800 and neither requires valve adjustments. It saves a lot of time and or money over the length of ownership.
I do shift while turning at times...I have an 86 700c...Never go beyond 80 as it just doesn't feel comfortable at that speed. Mine seems to need the choke on a bit to run smooth.
i've only replaced the upper level gaskets on the front cylinder and i need to replace the tires. whatever it is that's sticking only happens once in a while though, because i've ridden it for hours and it's started just fine
Being a lightweight and all, i did ..momentarily get mine to 219 km/hr..138 miles an hour..it headshook a tad at 127..and it idled like a rock lol (= that was a canadian version. Great bikes..if you tend to them well ! (=
thanks man, the bike has been rebuilt since this video stay tuned and you can see the updated video in the future! it has new paint and some new features
@@davidmcmanus5627 Man, how did you dig up that comment from 7 years ago? :D I had just bought my first bike then - 88 Honda Shadow - and must have been overly excited. Now I couldn't agree more - in fact, I'm in the process of converting a motorcycle to electric to replace my Shadow!
@@r_rumenov Oh, I'm just skilled at finding conversations that no longer matter. It's a talent. Pretty awesome for the electric bike. I designed an electric delivery scooter and was seriously considering manufacturing it until I discussed the likelihood of being sued for electrical failures or for accidents based on other people's driving skills. I figured maybe building an electric scooter for myself, but no one else, would probably be better. I also bought (I think) all of the components for converting my 76' Honda CB125S into an electric bike. I'm not sure I'm going to, now. Think I'll probably trade it to my mechanic for labor. I recently bought a 150cc scooter, which is nice and quiet, but goes the same speed as my car, and as I use both for delivery, I can save more money from insurance and maintenance using the scooter than the car. So, for now, that's what's on my plate. Best wishes for building that electric bike. Ride safely! :)
no problem, it's mainly about the size of the bike this bike was very small, about the size of a ninja 650 (even the engine performance is the same) if this bike was a VTX1800, Madura 1200, Goldwing, etc... it'd be a completely different story. Also this bike is MUCH quicker than i demonstrated in this video. This video was made when i had this bike for 1week. So i was not very experienced this was my first motorcycle.
hello i have a 85 shadow, i notice your oil light is on. any idea why? I had my bike serviced at a ride now location but my light is still on.. also, are you aware of how to flush the coolant from the bike to replace it?
tonyo1o the oil light is ALWAYS on before starting the bike when the bike is running the oil light is not on. The orange light you see on the top left is indicating that the left Turn Signal running light is on (my right turn signal running light did not work) the light you see on the bottom of the cluster to the right is the Over Drive light (6th gear) I would imagine maybe the sensor for your oil temperature is broken which would warrant a replacement. The best way to clean the coolant would be to empty it when the bike is cold. I would refer you to the Service Manual here: www.physics.wisc.edu/~mkauer/motorbike/1983_vt750.pdf you will see in Chapter 6 it goes in depth on how to replace the coolant *this manual is a must have for a antique honda shadow VT owner. thanks for watching!
about the shifting, i always downshift right before the turn, it's just what i have always done and i feel more comfortable doing that, and on mine if i'm riding it hard from take off i'll shift at 6k or a little more, and you go fast
I've never had problems with the starter button getting stuck. Nor my starter motor. If your starter motor is getting stuck it might be going bad. If it is going bad you can find them on Ebay from $30-100. I've replaced several things since I first got the bike. rear brake pads and lots of fuses and wiring inside of the headlight.
I have the same bike 8500 rpm redline , dont know the topspeed becaude its kind hard to hold on after 130 with no bug sheild my will run 125 in 3rd then 4 5 6 just short gears at 80 i can about 150 miles on a full tank , no it want hurt. The engine at interstate speeds high rpm motor it loves to rev and will take anything you throw at it down side is its alittle heavy for a 700 and it can be a hand full in tight turn other than that. I have nothing bad to say about it it hauls ass for ricerocket
I don't want to call you a liar here, but I own this bike too, and it cant make it anywhere near 125, in top gear (at least not stock). Its stock top speed is somwhere just over 100...
do you ever have problems with the starter sticking after a long ride? if i ride for about a half hour, fill my bike up with gas and then try and start it sometimes the starter will stick.
yeah, i don't do it often, but you get going really fast, once you ride even more you'll be able to tell how fast your cycle will slow down from down shifting, i hardly even use the brakes for turns
They are great putters, awesome idles, even better at 5500-8500 though...I burned the front cylinder out of one..the back cylinder compensated too well lol..lesson learned ! (=
That bike is a beauty! Would you consider it different from an '83 in terms of seat height and riding? Also would you recommend it as a good first bike for a shorter person?
Nice bike. I just picked up an '85 500 and I'm getting it fixed up and ready for the road. The bike is 10 years older now than it was when you made this video so I have to ask: Still got it?
Ah yeah I'm a little more experienced now I shift at 4k in town sometimes 3k to keep rpms and gas mileage down low. If I am having fun I'll shift at 6-7k I hate shifting through corners and I mostly hard brake and downshift before most corners now
This thing is pretty fast It won't struggle at 70 mph at ALL. This could cruise at 85 easy If you ask me. The mileage is probably 50-70 miles per gallon. The other day I rode it I'd say it could get about 200 miles a tank. This bike has plenty of power and torque 60ft lbs of torque 72HP. It's engine specs are about the same as modern day Kawasaki Ninja 650. I want a supersport bike though. If you want super fast this thing sits in the middle of bikes, It'll keep up with any big cruiser though.
I'm thinking about buying the same Honda but i was worried it'd choke itself to death in high revs when going 70~ mph (120 km/h).. guess it'll do fine if this video is an indication. How's the fuel consumption ?
Haha yeah that makes sense. I have the same bike its a pretty fun starter bike. and if you need them to pick up they still have the power do to so, so they are a good bike
so I have a 1996 ninja 500 that a guy was wanting trade for a 86 vt700 shadow. do you think that would be a good trade? what is the top speed on the 700?
In high gear you need to have carbs working good if you want to drive 60mph not mention good battery since rpm so low charging is at min with lights and depends on wind, accessories ect. Bike likes u to ride her 80mph in 6th.
Yeah the wiring in this old bike is very much a pain in the ass. It could easily be a wiring fault. If you make a video of it I can give you a better diagnoses as to what the problem is
I had an '84 700cc Shadow. If you wanna get scootin, tach that puppy up to 7k. After 1st gear, you can pin the throttle without it getting squirrly on ya. She'll do 130 if you ask her to. =D
and yes i am going to service it myself i had a 150cc moped and i modded the engine and serviced it completely on my own using youtube and google to learn from
it has 6th gears and i am glad our roads arent that bad there are parts of town that have bad pot holes but not where i live, i live in the nicer part of my town. if i leave my town and go north the roads get very bad
I sold the bike to my dad, he still has it. He should make videos but he doesn't! I will be going home this summer and i will probably make another video while i am there on this bike
I never did but it shouldn't of been too expensive to replace ($50) on Ebay. This bike needed a lot of different repairs but most of them were very inexpensive did you install the new CDI yourself? the bike had a bad coil that was replaced but that was only like $20
The pipes sound nice without being obnoxiously loud. To answer your question, I think that it is fine that you do not make a shift through the turn. for sure i just sold the shadow but it had 55k miles on it when it went and it still ran just as good as the day i got it
i like the sound. so soft and warm
I do shift while turning at times...I have an 86 700c...Never go beyond 80 as it just doesn't feel comfortable at that speed. Mine seems to need the choke on a bit to run smooth.
I have Honda VT 500 c 1985 . Fuel consumption 3,5 lit / 100 km . Great bike.
DANG DUDE!! You take care of that! Not many bikes like that around any more!
Can't wait to get mine running looks like a good cruiser and hey good on ya for keeping the rpm low doing that will keep that bike nice forever
i've only replaced the upper level gaskets on the front cylinder and i need to replace the tires. whatever it is that's sticking only happens once in a while though, because i've ridden it for hours and it's started just fine
Being a lightweight and all, i did ..momentarily get mine to 219 km/hr..138 miles an hour..it headshook a tad at 127..and it idled like a rock lol (=
that was a canadian version.
Great bikes..if you tend to them well ! (=
The bike sounds great. I am looking for one of these as a second bike to turn into a bobber style.
thanks man, the bike has been rebuilt since this video stay tuned and you can see the updated video in the future! it has new paint and some new features
Loud pipes save lives, brother! Be safe and ride on!
They're also obnoxiously loud and startle people. Practiced driving skills make a better difference.

1:42 is that a one way street lol looks that way the way the cars are parked.
Thanks for the video I was wondering about between getting a sport or cruiser but I did not know a cruiser could handle so well.

For your acceleration demo, you're shifting too early for that bikes powerband. peak torque @ 6,000rpm, and peak hp @ 7,500 rpm.
yeah it aint no harley, its a honda made to scream!
what are those numbers for an 1100?
DJ X2UU my 750 makes more power than an 1100

Did ya?

+IanTheGreatAndTerrible Top speed is 127 sounds like your bike has mechanical issues.

i replaced the starter motor so i'm hoping it's just going to be the button
No shifting mid turn.

you could have gotton more from it by using it to the redline
Haha yeah that makes sense. I have the same bike its a pretty fun starter bike. and if you need them to pick up they still have the power do to so, so they are a good bike
so I have a 1996 ninja 500 that a guy was wanting trade for a 86 vt700 shadow. do you think that would be a good trade? what is the top speed on the 700?
idk about the 700c, but the 750c does about 135mph, so i would guess the 700 does about 125+mph
power kicks in at 6k rpm *bout 50ft lbs of it* so its got nice power at low rpms however it redlines too soon
Were the pipes standard or modified in any way?
ok, i have a gopro hero2 on it's way!! can't wait for summer here in Minnesota
was it full acceleration?
top speed?
In high gear you need to have carbs working good if you want to drive 60mph not mention good battery since rpm so low charging is at min with lights and depends on wind, accessories ect. Bike likes u to ride her 80mph in 6th.
i have an 83 750 shadow, i got that thing going 130 and i couldn't believe it!!!
thats wierd the more i ride the bike the better it reacts i need to replace my tires too the front one is dry rotting
ah thats cool i normally shift low at like 5k how long ago did you have your bike? i really like this bike it's a lot of fun
is this a 700 shaft drive?
3:18 acceleration. I did not go as fast as it can go.
Awesome man I will go ahead and subscribe to your channel! I just got the Drift HD Cam its really awesome
Do you still have the bike
I don't have it but my dad does, i sold it to him. I plan on making another video of it next time i ride it but i live 9 hours away from home
Yeah the wiring in this old bike is very much a pain in the ass. It could easily be a wiring fault. If you make a video of it I can give you a better diagnoses as to what the problem is
If you like subscribe to my channel I'll try and give a more in depth review of this bike soon.
By the way you should check out my latest videos I have a good camera now and I will make more videos showing the bikes performance in the near future
No and i was shifting at 4k rpms it'll go 0-90 three times as fast as this
I had an '84 700cc Shadow. If you wanna get scootin, tach that puppy up to 7k. After 1st gear, you can pin the throttle without it getting squirrly on ya. She'll do 130 if you ask her to. =D
and yes i am going to service it myself i had a 150cc moped and i modded the engine and serviced it completely on my own using youtube and google to learn from
it will go 130mph max. its funny the specifications on this bike are the same as the modern day Ninja 650 commuter bike
He is in Air Force Basic Training and can't answer you. Try checking for dry rotted fuel lines.
true haha it's also not meant to go that fast i was still an amateur rider and rode in low revs so the acceleration wasnt as good
it has 6th gears and i am glad our roads arent that bad there are parts of town that have bad pot holes but not where i live, i live in the nicer part of my town. if i leave my town and go north the roads get very bad
it sure is
Buddy rev that thing up for petes sake....it don't break at redline....!
sir your key area is missing lol
lol yeah the bike didnt have an ignition switch it was hot wired it had a little knob you twisted to start
LiveToRide you still have yours? i have the same year mines a vt500c shadow
I sold the bike to my dad, he still has it. He should make videos but he doesn't! I will be going home this summer and i will probably make another video while i am there on this bike

lol they sucked i went down with them once and they deteriorated
Overdrive is for cruising, not speeding haha
Roberto from futrurama
Light er' up
you need a bike jacket at least dude...
i have a textile one now with armor built in
