Garrison Brothers is polarizing. Some people think their bourbon is disgusting, while others love it. I like that crazy Texas funk, so I am a fan. Also, I like how Garrison Brothers and other distilleries outside of the core territory of bourbon are expanding the stylistic range of this type of whisky. I have a bottle of Balmorhea, which is the double oak variation. It is rich, complex, and powerful - definitely not an easy daily drinker, but a very interesting drink for those times when I want something different.
When I buy an expensive bottle of booze (i.e. US$200 or more), I am looking for more than high quality. I can find plenty of options for high quality, well crafted bourbon in the $50 to $100 range. When I buy an expensive bottle, I want a unique experience. Balmorhea, which goes for around $200, provides this. Now, I want the Cowboy Bourbon too. I might have to grab one if I see it. Its availability is intermittent and spotty, so it might be a while before a bottle shows up.
That's a great point about the unique experience having some inherent value in and of itself, Heather. Well said!
You all sold me on this bottle. I've never seen it here in middle Tennessee but I may just ask some friends in Texas to pick up a bottle and send it to me. This thing sounds just about perfect!
My favorite Texas Whiskeys are Still Austin Cask Strength and Belfour Bourbon. 🥃
100% Still Austin is the BEST Bourbon in Texas
I do need to try some of these. I absolutely adore balcones
Great video. If you get a chance, go visit Fredricksberg and Garrison is not far away. Great tour. Erin will probably love the Hill Country Vineyards nearby.
9:00 Have y'all considered guessing the MSRP before you reveal the price? Yet another dimension to your awesome review.
Great question. We have considered it and even done it in the past, but retail can vary so wildly (and for reasons beyond sheer quality) that we settled on reacting to the price before finding out what we’re drinking as a happy medium.
If you get a chance try Elijah Craig Barrel Proof A123. I say this because of the comment you made about this bottle reminding you of a high proof Calumet 16. I had the same feeling between Cal 16 and ECBP A123. It's not the exact same tastes - different distillery and 20 proof points different - but it's like they are first cousins in experience provided.
We have tried A123 and like it a LOT. We’ll have to revisit with that thought in mind.
You all heard it here... Josh said he'll pay $220 for a Texas bourbon. And Erin said it was okay. 😁
Slowly and surely chipping away at her price shock reflex. 😂
Commenting on a post where a dude in the state group who just watched the GB Cowboy Bourbon doc clearly just algorithmed this up for me. Such a fun place to visit/tour…I still wanna do their volunteer bottling, but for me, I need to decide if Still Austin Red Corn or Blue Corn is the Best Texas has to offer…maybe batch 2 Red Corn.
The Red and Blue are both so good. Tough call between the two!
Happy birthday, i love garrison brothers, I've only had the small batch at 94prf and cask strength single barrel at 128prf. Haven't seen the cowboy yet, but i will buy it if i find it. Great vid thanks
Happy Birthday. Love watching you two. Rewatched your Arran 10 video. Totally forgot I got a gift set (bottle and 2 glasses for half the price of the bottle). Will have to have a pour.
Cheers to that LeRone! Enjoy!
drinking game per this episode: Take a "sip" every time Josh says 'co-mingling' lol
😂😂
Happy belated birthday Josh . Hello Erin .I grabbed a bottle of there plain 94 proof bourbon about 3 years ago before the word got out
about them for I think 35 dollars , while not high proof it had a nice flavor and finish with some oak . Live stream was fun to watch but
what was the water for ? Hope ya'll enjoy the rest of your vacation .
Thanks so much Walt. Cheers!
@@stuffandwhiskey I still don't get why Erin was drinking so much water ?
@@WaltKrause oh, no clue. We’d have to rewatch to see. Probably just because she was thirsty and/or limiting consumption so sipping water instead of whiskey. I have the opposite problem in that I keep on sipping whiskey and forget to drink enough water. If only we could even each other out in that regard. 😆
@@stuffandwhiskey I was just wondering why every body was saying hydrate . Hope ya'll are enjoying Chicago . Could be why my last
tasting hit me so hard .
@@waltkrause6318 ah okay! Yeah I’m notoriously bad about not hydrating enough during livestreams, so folks try to remind me. They’re just looking out for me for the next morning. Really appreciate you tuning in!
"I don't have to have it at that price........ do I have to have it at that price?" 😂
The 2023 Cowboy Bourbon is even better and at 140.9 proof as well. They are usually 6 or more years old as well which is forever in Texas. They use smaller barrels as well.
Love the riding the rollercoaster with friends analogy
I'm glad you guys got wood drinking this wonderful whiskey. 🤣I love Garrison Bros and I have a more expensive bottle from them that's finished in French limousine barrels. I picked it up when I was there for a tour. It was a great place to visit.
You guys always crack me up! Hope you had an awesome 40th!
Thanks Mark! And it’s been an awesome celebratory trip. Cheers!
Interesting that the bourbon was close to its price point of $200+. Was always interested in Garrison but the price always kept me from buying. Will need to get a pour myself to see if it'll be worth it. Thanks for the review!
Welcome to Texas whiskey! BAM!
That green wood is there.. But it's surprisingly good.
Happy Birthday John! Question how would you rank this against Joseph Magnus Cigar Blend? JMCB goes for $200 in my market. As good as it is, this is right on the edge of its worth for me.
JMCB is a different (and preferable) beast to this for both of us. If we could find one at retail then we’d definitely buy one.
@@stuffandwhiskey Thanks! JMCB is one of those bottles I weigh others against when bumping up against the $200 mark. RedBreast 12yr Cast Strength is my Irish at $100 that I weigh other Irish's against. Ardbeg Uigeadail & Bunnahabbain 12 are my Scotch's. Thanks again for your incite and help! Hope you had a great Birthday! I can get JMCB on Allocation days I'll grab the next one for you guys when it's available.
Happy 40th Josh!!! I hope you have an Outstanding Day!!! Sorry I missed the livestream last night but I hope you had an Amazing time and that you felt the love this community has for you and Erin!!!
I have had a couple of Garrison bourbons before and found them delicious, however at upwards of $300 CDN a bottle I have to draw my per bottle expenditures somewhere and $200 CDN is about my limit. Garrison Brothers is a stellar distillery though.
Thanks so much! It was an awesome birthday weekend, livestream, and trip. We're back home now, settling into everyday life again, and definitely feeling the love!
Does this have the same Texas funk I get on Balcones?
Great question. Balcones is more FUNK funk whereas this is more interesting funk. Not sure if that’s a “quality of product” thing or if Balcones and Garrison Brothers profiles just differ that much.
Happy birthday! I hope you are feeling okay after the livestream. It was a good one. I keep seeing this at my local store, but I just can't pull the trigger.
Thanks Peter! Feeling amazing today, surprisingly.
Happy Birthday Josh🎉🎉🎂🥃 welcome to old age😂
Garrison Brothers is so horribly expensive, at least here, that all I've ever tried is the boot flask (which cost as much as a fifth of plenty of other bourbons). And it was AWFUL. It's one of only three or four whiskies that I've found completely undrinkable. It was like someone took the clippings after he mowed the lawn, ground all the juice out of them, and poured the juice into vodka. The only way I'll try Garrison Brothers again is if it's a free sample.
And on a more positive note, happy birthday, Josh!🎂🎉🪅🎊🍨
And if you wanna get into football, then HOOK 'EM HORNS! 🤠⭐🐂
Thanks for the birthday wishes, and for letting us know to never try the boot flask Garrison Bros. That sounds horrible!
I was actually turned on to Garrison Brothers whiskey by a Specs employee. They were out of the cowboy so I got the Balmorhea. It is delicious too.
The battle going on in Josh's head is entertaining to watch.
Happy Birthday, Josh. I hope you have a great day.
Thanks so much! Cheers!
I always have a dram at 11am on Mondays. My boss looks at me funny, but I don't care.
😂😂
Happy belated birthday Josh! If it's that good that would be like a birthday gift. Otherwise spending $220 on a 750 ml bottle of bourbon just seems silly. I had a $300 bottle given to me and it was really nice. I immediately looked for the same company with its less costly products because they usually fall pretty close from the tree. They ended up having a $40 bottle that was along the same flavor profile just a little less refined but still delicious. I might get the $60 bottle next time. But the $300 bottle was a treat.
I’ve had to different bottles of this shared with me, both were fantastic.
Unfortunately for the price point, they REALLY need more consistency.
Green wood is live wood as opposed to cut and dried wood.
Happy birthday 🎂🥃
Only had two samples of Garrison, and both were really expensive, and really awful. Glad you found a really good one. Because Calumet 16 is our there, one store has Calumet 15 down at $99. If you even have a thought that it's as good as this Garrison, then it would be a hard no for me even if it was that good.
We’d definitely rather drink Calumet 15 or 16 over this 90% of the time. The worth here is when you want that shock and awe of the wild ride the other 10% of the time.
What better friend to enjoy it than your wife?
Great video.
If there is a way to buy, Frey Ranch Cask Strength (your pick), please let me know.
It’ll be August-ish before it’s bottled, through the distributor chain, and at our retail partner for sale. It’ll go out to all the channel’s respective Patreon communities in tiered order.
I have this batch
To me ALL Garrison Bros. Tastes Burnt/Charcoal... there are much better Texas Bourbons for a LOT less money, like Still Austin, Balcones and Yellow Rose
ROLL TIDE!!! Josh!!!
It’s a pass for me. Wouldn’t be around my area anyway.
Garrison = great! #teenspirit
Fresh cut wood? Is that what you’re trying to say Josh?
There we go!
I'd have a difficult time speaking $220 on a bottle of whiskey.
Us too! That’s a lotta money for a consumable product.
Go Dawgs! UGA!!!
We cannot support nor condone this comment, but we still appreciate you watching. Cheers and Roll Tide/O H!
@@stuffandwhiskeywell no buddy’s perfect. Respect your elders young man. 😂
@@stuffandwhiskey well I shoulda kept my mouth shut on that one 🤣🤣
@@Mykkus haha, man that was a wild game! I never felt comfortable even with the big lead, and thought y'all had it with the big play near the end.
Roll Tide!
Like to have a bottle
220$ is worth it? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 No thx
I wish i were 40 now.😢
I've had the Balmorhea and Cowboy from Garrison, and if I'm buying..... I'm getting a Balcones store pick. 😁
That’s exactly what I thought to myself, maybe even three store pics.
Garrison is top tier. Will be visiting their distillery later this year. So delicious. And ik how crazy it sounds but when this is mixed with strawberry lemonade, OOF. It’s almost like a mixed berry pie.
If you like what this is doing I implore you guys to try and get your hands on some Balcones Texas Pot Still Bourbon and their 100% Texas Rye. They both have similar unique flavors and they're usually $30-40 on the shelf here in New York. The Bourbon is easier to find here but hopefully, you can find them there. Cheers!
The rye is coming up on the channel soon! It’s… different. 😂
Ive had a couple garrison brothers now and they were all awful for me. Especially the cowboy bourbon. Some coworkers and i tried the cowboy and we were all like "i would be angry if i paid $50 for that". Yes they have a fudgey quality to them but its overshadowed by a complete lack of any developed flavor and overwhelming sour oak and medicinal alcohol. Add on the price point and they are an extremely hard pass for me. I get they have a very specific market that they appeal to but you dont know if youre part of that until you try it.
You’re typically spot on….
Garrison Brothers in one word…..
Inconsistent
Interesting! We didn’t get the sour oak or medicinal alcohol. Proof for sure, and very dry oak on this one.
@@johncashion8428 i would believe that. Honestly. Ive heard people rave about some and say others are terrible, plus my luck is pretty bad.
@@stuffandwhiskey tbf the cowboy bourbon i had was the 2021 not 2022, but it was pretty recently
howdy from san antonio. I'm commenting from 30 seconds in, but I'm looking forward to this topic :-)
ok, I now have seen it. I haven't had it, but stay away from their entry-level bourbon.
Also the green quality just sounds like he means wood thats still alive
No bottle is worth more than £100
