Devs flat out lied about the map being infinite and procedurally generated. They also lied about the player being able to go as far as possible before they ran out of fuel or died from storms, while also being able to find really good loot and upgrades, etc.
+Turtle Power the only thing they got right was that it would be dangerous, since you start losing health almost immediately after you get the warning that says you're entering the Big Nothing.

If you want to get into the Big Nothing it always work if you do this... Go to the area outside of the map between the Dunes and Jeet's Territory, where the map tapers, it looks like a sideways V. To the East of the map. Drive down the valley. You have to have the Interceptor. As soon as a storm hits, wait for the dust to hit you, and drive into the Big Nothing. You have to be outside of the area where you get the warning, and definitely outside of the area that causes damage. Optional: Before you get in, you can call the Magnum Opus and drive it near the edge of the damage area, then when the storm hits, push the MO with the Interceptor, and when the storm stops, which should be after a few meters, you're ready to get off and get into the MO. I rather do it like this because the MO handles better. You don't have to drive off that drop, keep going clockwise around the outside of the map. The drop is not only to the northeast, so careful don't fall.
Remember, you can't do it if you're not INSIDE the Interceptor. That car makes the the difference. But like I said, get the Magnum Opus near the line where you start taking damage(don't lose sight of the Interceptor or it will disappear), push it with the Interceptor, you'll take a little bit of damage(have canteen full), and the storm should stop soon. Get out, get in the MO and enjoy your ride. Now, don't go left once inside the Big Nothing, you'll run into some mountains and you'll start taking damage. Go up and then start going right. If you fall from the drop keep near the edge, going right, and don't crash against it too hard or you'll glitch the game. Keep going and you'll see ramps to get back up.
I wait until there is a storm and head out into that....sometimes you are beyond the kill zone after the storm abates and can continue to drive all around the big nothing. I have driven to the plains of silence and its just salt flats that seems to go on forever.....but I will say this.....The Big Nothing is formatted and could easily have been inculcated into the game...Its replete with mountains and gullys, old roads and car graveyards......After seeing this area (And its HUGE) i have found a scrap icon on the right hand side of the map up naer the top end, yet there is no scrap.....I believe they did have plans to make Mad max as big as the big nothing but finances curtailed that (Drastically).....its magic driving out there, and be careful of the edge cos once you fall down onto the salt flats there is no way back....

can the citadel be seen in the distance anywhere in the game? cause in fury road they have a clear view between the citadel and gastown i just thought itd be kinda cool if you can at least see it somewhere
The game just didn't do a great job of explaining that, but yeah they are the same thing. Max wanted the "Plains of Silence" a.k.a. to have solitude out in the Big Nothing
i believe it was explained a nuclear winter made alot of the earths oceans retreat into the artic and turn into glaciers. so when the earth heats up again the water will come back.

No matter what you do, you always reach a "kill wall" unless you use mods.

After restarting I could not go back out into the big nothing without dying. Most likely a one time glitch related to the death race.
