    This storm apparently had wind gusts around 140 mph in and around CR. For reference, that's equivalent to a Category 4 hurricane or an EF3 tornado. I can't imagine how terrifying these storms must've been. Sending love from your northern neighbors in Minnesota 🙏

      @@CarlJohnson-rt7bc for the SW side on CR where i live, we had 140+ wind speeds for almost 40 minutes straight. I was home alone while on the phone before the service cut off. It was around 1:00 i believe when the power went off and didn't turn back on for another 1 and a half weeks. I was babysitting a 9 year old who was hysterical and wouldn't calm down. His dad came home and said his truck (a huge ford) was being lifted off the road while driving home. The worst thing about it is that KCRG had lost their radars in Tama and KCRG is located in Marion/outer CR. so their only option was to start tornado sirens and hope people would listen. A very scary storm and something all Iowans will remember, even though it 5 months later Iowa is still re building our cities.

    First off... we were warned. The sirens began about a half hour before the storm hit. I was in north Iowa City when it hit. It was a wall of wind and an incredible storm. About twenty minutes into the storm we went to the basement.
    I’ve never seen anything like it...

      I was in Cedar Rapids. I agree with you 100%. But in Iowa the sirens don’t don’t really scare us as we probably hear them about every other month. That storm was absolutely ridiculous. Just an absolute wall of 100 mph wind for 30 minutes straight. We couldn’t have been prepared for THAT.

    Wow, that was one big blow that kept going and going and going.
    There was a Derecho here in Southern Illinois back in May of 2009. Thousands of trees down. No electricity for almost a week. People saw F0, F1, F2 tornadoes spin up within this Derecho and boy did that tear things up. Crops could be replanted because the storm hit in early May. Damage to trees can still be seen even after 11 years! I'll never forget seeing shopping carts at Wal-Mart go flying across the parking lot and crashing into cars. Never will I just see a normal everyday thunderstorm heading out of Missouri and crossing the Mississippi River on radar and think there's not much to worry about. Given the right conditions, another Derecho can and will happen again.
    Bless you, all.

I have never seen this much widespread destruction in my 57 years. How can you report when there wasn't power or cable anywhere? Lol I'm just saying everyone did a pretty shit job of warning any of us. The tornado sirens didn't even go off in most of the city. And they had plenty of time to alert people since it had hit des Moines earlier. Almost everyone I knew had no idea of how bad it was going to be. I've heard dozens of stories of people who were outside in it because they had no idea it was going to be remotely bad.

    • @heatherstub
      @heatherstub 2 роки тому +1

      @@michaeldickson5495 I wonder if you could have done much better? Consider the fact that they were announcing 100 MPH winds before it hit, approximately 25 minutes before the storm entered Cedar Rapids. They were also describing what they saw outside the windows before they evacuated the studio. The NWS was also issuing severe thunderstorm warnings 15-20 minutes before they arrived. This thing developed very rapidly, so it would have been difficult to tell just how intense they'd become. If people would just think to stop and tune in to a radio station or weather radio, they'd have known well in advance about this situation in enough time to get to safety. But again, they had no idea that this storm would become so intense, because the derecho was building strength very quickly which is how they usually perform. They did the best they could do. If I remember correctly, there's even a video here on YT where someone got a warning nearly 15 minutes before the derecho hit Des Moines. I also heard the sirens through the time when it all started going down outside the studio even past 50 minutes. I'm hearing it with headphones, and they started going off well before the storm started in Cedar Rapids. They stopped for a short time and went off a second time just as the storm hit Cedar Rapids, and they stayed on for over 20-25 minutes.

    8 days without power in Marion. 8 days. I was in Stanwood at the time, and got a txt from my mom that it was coming and it had just hit there. Less than 1/2 hour later the power went out in Stanwood. It sounded like someone was throwing rocks at the building. There were trees down everywhere, and only one way out of town. 30 was clear all the way back to 13. When I got to back to Marion, I had to go through a maze just to get home since most intersections were blocked. There was a 21" tree down on top of our garage, pinning 2 cars inside. The waiting list was at least a week to get the tree taken care of. I got discouraged, and went on a prayer walk down the street- praying for whoever had damage in the neighborhood. Then when I got to the end of the street, I saw a telehandler putting shingles on the roof of a house with no damage at all. It didn't seem fair that they were getting help and not us. Turns out it was a contractor from out of town looking for work. He drove by our house within an hour, and said he could get the tree off our garage. Then 4 people from church came over and helped us get our cars out. Then the contractor showed up and the tree was off an hour later. Prayer is all that got us through. There is no other explanation. God hears our prayers.

  • @akibawolfproductions
    @akibawolfproductions 3 роки тому +3

    Okay so for some context for those saying "I wish I'd had warning" Derechos form without warning. To radar they simply look like a major thunderstorm event (severe/supercell), however, they can only be confirmed AS a Derecho when a storm chaser enters them. Most Derechos can produce tornadoes but for the most part, they are straight line wind storms with a shit ton of rain, hail, lightning (usually sheet), that can last from a few minutes to a few hours.
    For context, yes I've been in one (hell I took a "shower" in one just for laughs - regretted it later when I got a cold...ah well....such was the life of a teenager). Anyways, we only knew it was a Derecho because thankfully, storm chasers had been staging outside of my hometown because another weather event had been popping up on radar (oh look it's a supercell that went bloody EAST while the Derecho came WEST -_- fml). When they confirmed the storm was NOT rotating and showed no signs of rotation, it was quickly determined that we had a Derecho en route and our town's sirens went off giving people a 15 minute lead time.
    And unlike those in the previous video to this one....we heeded those sirens and took shelter. Thankfully, ours was fairly mild (sustained wind speeds of 70MpH) but we still sustained damage to various buildings, trees, etc.

    • @brandonjvl1987
      @brandonjvl1987 2 роки тому

      I'm not trying to be rude honestly, but do you know the meaning of the word derecho? It means a line of severe thunderstorms that moves over a area equal or greater than 250 miles. It has nothing to do with chasers etc. Must severe thunderstorm warnings issued for a non derecho or derecho is by the national weather service by radar (radar indicated). When something like this happens the national weather service has a clear knowledge of what's happening. Only reason why the wind reports kept getting higher is yes because of the spotter reports. But there has been many derecheos and straight line wind events that have been warned many counties in advanced from the storm many times. Being from Southern Wisconsin it happens many times a year (severe thunderstorms warnings issued counties in advanced and up to a hour ahead). Spotters are crucial although doesn't need to only be confirmed by them. In many locations (depending on region) sirens are activated when winds are over 80mph. In my location it is 80mph. People that are weather aware will have well more time to prepare before the sirens go off. Even in this video you see what's called a blanket warning (many counties warned well ahead of the storm, some 40+ mins ahead).

      1:58:44 The meteorologist explains a little bit about the storm origins. As far as the warnings, Severe Thunderstorm Warnings are usually issued for up to 1 hour. If you want more advance notice than that, you have to look for the Severe Thunderstorm Watch, which was issued for central Iowa at 9 AM. It was extended into eastern Iowa by 11:30 AM and deemed a "particularly dangerous situation."

For 4 days we had no cellphone service no internet service and newspapers weren't delivered, and no electricity for 6 days. I have 2 battery operated TVs that used to be used in these cases, that are worthless now! 80% of this broadcast, and ALL of the info put out for the next several days didn't exist to most of us. I used to live in Buffalo NY and Lake Erie always had a moderating effect on severe weather, except of course during the early winter with the infamous lake effect snow with thunder and lightning. Some of the thunderstorms that develop in the lake effect are severe themselves and just add to the wind and the snow coming down

    One thing I'm afraid of is that continued Global Warming will start making what I call SUPER DERECHOS possible! I define a "super derecho" as a derecho that packs winds of 200 mph or greater -- the literal equivalent of an EF-5 tornado! Here's how Global Warming will enable super derechos: the increased temperature of the atmosphere will increase the amount of water vapor that the atmosphere can hold; and the heat, along with the increased moisture, will increase the average CAPE (Convective Available Potential Energy) that any given thunderstorm can tap into. Derechos just LOVE high-CAPE environments, especially ones with unidirectional speed wind shear. This means winds that change speed with height, but not direction. We have already seen in the past 50 years or so, that Global Warming has been increasing the average intensity of thunderstorms. So, I'm afraid that 140-mph derechos like this one will become an at least once-per-year occurrence! The new "extreme" derechos will be those 200+ mph super derechos. To get an idea of what a super derecho will be like, look at the city of Joplin, Missouri. Now, take the EF-5 tornado damage that that city experienced, and expand that EF-5 damage to the ENTIRE city of Joplin. That's what experiencing a super derecho will be like!
