i play the suona in chinese orchestra and i must say it takes a really long time to even play a full song. but once mastered it can truly play beautiful music. youths these days see the suona as a very loud and noisy instrument. I wish that the younger generation would learn and preserve this art be it traditional fols suona or concert orchestral suona
Yes, I think the suaon is a wonderful instrument, but people just aren't used to that kind of music anymore. I love the sound that a suona makes.

I heard multiple ways to play suona with semitones. The most one I can find on internet is Guo Yazhi's Huoxin. The other one is Keyed suona, which is not my favorate. I also found a way with an extra thumb hole, and also a special skill by half-lifting fingers. Do you know which way is the most popular, and suggested for new learner? Thx!

Amazing.. I never realised that the suona has evolved to be able to produce notes. Such a powerful and unique sound like that of a bird.. its really a major contributor to the uniqueness of the Chinese orchestra.. seemingly 'cacophonous' and popularly used in weddings and funerals .. such a memorable sound.. its an instrument loved like only a mother can for a son... really glad that the instrument with its now wider range of notes and continuous refinement has started and hope it will inspire the entire Chinese orchestra to attain newer heights of musical harmony and beauty and perhaps one day win back the hearts of the Chinese youth

In my past, when I was young, I always wanted to learn to play a suona. I like the sound of this instrument very much. And in my youth I always wanted to play a saxophone.
Unfortunately, I never did either.... or learned. Too bad...

Nah, it actually is a saxophone. They used tons of saxophone in the soundtrack for that game.

Suona got into Cuba because of Indian and Chinese laborers, not just Chinese. In India, its called Sannai(variant of Nadaswaram). It was predominantly a black musical instrument from Cuba.

Suona is a kind of oboe instrument, also called Suona, Surna, Golden Koujiao, and Horn. It is called "Dehe" in Hokkien, Cantonese, Hokkien, and Teochew (Jiaoping: Di1 Daa2; 啲打) , "Blowing", and "Blowing" or "Ba Yin" in Taiwanese.
The traditional suona has a bright sound and a large volume. The tube is made of wood and is shaped like a circular cone. It was introduced to Xinjiang during the Western Jin Dynasty. There are paintings of suona in the wall paintings of the Kizil Caves. It was introduced to the Central Plains from Persia in the post-Yuan Dynasty and began to spread among the people. Since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, it is often used by the people.
Sorna is written in Persian: sūrnāy, sūr means strong, and nāy means flute. It is a different kind of "reed flute" that is mostly used for parties, feasts and other lively and lively occasions.
The modern Chinese Orchestra popularly uses an improved suona, the hole is changed to a circle, and the average temperament is adopted.
Modern China imitated Western symphony orchestras and established national orchestras, but there are almost no brass instruments in traditional Chinese musical instruments. Therefore, when composing the composition, the composer changed the suona, which was originally a woodwind, to a role similar to the brass in a symphony orchestra. Therefore, Suona is mostly used for the majestic and imposing passages. The traditional Suona’s tube has 8 sound holes, which are used by the index finger, middle finger, ring finger, and little finger of the right hand, and the thumb, index finger, middle finger, and ring finger of the left hand to press the sound. The way of pronunciation is to hold the whistle made of reed in the mouth to make it vibrate and produce sound, and then the sound is produced through the vibration and amplification of the tube body and the bowl.
Suona can control the whistle with its mouth to control the volume, pitch, timbre, and the application of various techniques. Its tone volume changes greatly and can make a very smooth portamento. Suona players must have the skill to adjust the whistle according to the timbre requirements of different music.
Traditional suona can be divided into small suona (also known as sea flute), high-pitched suona, and big suona according to the range and instrument size. Among them, it can be further divided into various tonal suonas, such as small suona in G, small suona in F, and treble in D Suona, high-pitched suona in C, big suona in G, etc. (tonality refers to the sound played when the bottom 3 holes are released). The common range of traditional suona is 17 degrees, and the most commonly used D high-pitched suona has a range from low A to high a, and the highest b is less commonly used.
The modern improved keyed suona has added buttons and semitone holes to expand the range and stabilize the pitch. Generally, it can be divided into keyed high-pitched suona, keyed alto suona, keyed tenor suona, and keyed low-pitched suona. Due to the differences in different regions and manufacturers, the shape and the way of pressing holes are also different. The most common keyed midrange suona sounds, and the common range is generally 18 degrees.

I play Scottish bagpipes, this instrument looks extremely similar to the bagpipe chanter. The holes are the same. The fingering even looks the same. I bet I could play this easily.

In Persia, very popular instrument, the Suorna, سورنا. Played in weddings.
It is a Persian instrument.
It is not used in any Arab country as far as I know.
The ancient Chinese could not distinguish between Arabia and Persia
We play "zorna" in Algeria. The player is called "zarnaji". I read that the word is also used in Syria and Iraq. Certainly an Ottoman heritage. But overall, this kind of instrument is played in all the Arab world with different names like mizmar or ghaita.

I grew up in Aden, Yemen where these instruments were played on festive days.
The NAAN bread of Ningxia, Xinjiang and China was also made in Aden..... broughf over from Hindustan. We also called it NAAN.
I thought it was derived from the sorna...
in the old time, Arabic have a good exchange with China, only only music, also food. A lot of interesting things come to China, and changing during history, that having some Chinese thing merged into together. I think now, we world should do the some. Accepting different cultures and develop together...
