Syracuse played so odd but incredibly effective in forcing the attackers to abandon attacking multiple angles. And with far less troops he held the attackers back.
SPOILERS
He did pro move.He made em abandon siege towers, amassed their forces on just one side of walls and used wall towers to pepper em.If other players from defenders joined him they could've won way sooner.Many players just let attackers breach and fight in city streets instead commiting troops at walls.Thumbs up for this guy way of thinking.
Most importantly, he wasted 20 minutes that the attackers have to take the settlement.

I don't care if it's a siege battle or a pitch battle, if it's 20 minutes long or an hour long, if it's very close or if a team wins by a huge margin, as long as it's Rome 2
Pretty brilliant defense tbh. Funneled the attackers into a small section of one side of the wall and limited their options.

IP man and other films are cool but in reality a one vs many fight is only won by making sure you fight as little people at the same time as possible, and that's until help arrives or you can run to safety.

I think the early sally out was meant to pressure the enemies into that one corner where its easier to set up choke points on them

love this, a good infantry sally well handled can paralyze attacking armies just as well as a cav sally, sometimes even better. it takes the attackers off balance and gets them thinking in a defensive mindset, and if they dont snap out of it that'll cost them the battle

Responding to your question at 16:07, so I haven’t seen how this all goes. The sally forth might have been a good idea for two reasons
1) slows and confuses the assault, forcing the attackers into restricted avenues of attack and perhaps running out the clock
2) allows for a lot of time fighting beneath the wall where fire from wall top archers, artillery, and towers could be granted the time to rack up enough kills to turn the tide of the battle.

Gotta say, the teamwork and gameplay/strategy for both teams was some of the best I’ve ever seen. Use of gaps was amazing!

That defensive win. It looked like the attackers was going to take the win for a moment but the defenders pulled off a great last minute stand.
That sally out on the flanks was meant to pincer the attackers the focus the center walls giving the defenders a fighting chance on the flanks.
As the end game message reads *The best way to avoid being flanked is to stop the enemy flanking force from arriving.*

The moment Boii attacked Syracuse, Arverni should have attacked on the other side, the Syracuse player would have not been able to manage troops on two opposite side of the city
For me, it was really the most interesting battle in your Channel. Some nasty strats in the start, great fight in the middle ant the finał result that couldnt be certain to the last second. Really great!
I really hope you get to the million Pix, I've been watching you for à long time, you really deserve it.
There is an advantage in numbers. I know it was the elite troops that pulled it out in the end, but bringing all those cheap units let the defenders be very aggressive. If that aggression had ever lead to successful attacks on the archers, they'd have won pretty easily, from how I saw the archers change momentum repeatedly. Plus aggressive defense is just more fun to watch.
Thracian Warriors are actually pretty cheap at 420 gold per unit, wouldn’t consider them elite

Units on walls tend to get shredded by concentrated archer fire. Even if the archers are grounded and outside the city. That’s why you need throw away units holding wall. Lure attacker in, then pepper them when they start overtaking the throw away units defending the wall.

The first engagement of the sally out went great imo the second went terrible though the second engagement field placement kept the attackers from engaging that entire side of the wall so they wasnt to terrible

Defending team is a total bomb.
I think that aggressive play from Syracuse at the start put the attackers on the back foot from the start and they spent the rest of the game trying to cease back the initiative, but just couldn't wrestle it from the defenders

If I had to guess. The defending force probably pushed out to hopefully push the attackers tighter together on the corner so the could hold less choke points.
At this point without even finishing the video I don’t care who wins. This battle has been non stop action with units moving left and right it is EPIC.
I think the sally out helped his team out in the end. He was able to get decent kills and with the attackers waiting so long he was able to buy his team quiet a bit of time.
In regards to the slingers on the wall. When they're able to hit units in the sides or back, they will get a ton of kills, and I think this is what the defenders were going for.

Strategie and good communication is the key to win or lose a siege. With this in mind you can win from better players ....
Attackers could have dealt with Syracuse much more effectively. Tear them up with range then charge in and cut the rest down. Quick clean kills with minimal loses.
But you will waste your ammo on 3-4 units. Hoplites and Thureos spears are well armoured, they could take tons of missiles. And assaulting with 35 minutes left and no archers, good luck cutting through chokepoints.
Thracian warriors came in clutch
Syracuse's tactics were very unorthodox, but probably won their team the game.
Defenders killed 6480, while attackers lost 7413. I think Gorms strategy kind of worked because a lot of those 933 kills were probably from towers from beginning.

I don't think he was trying to ambush with those units in the forest courtyard. It does have a use hiding them however and was a good idea. Any time you can keep units hidden, it keeps the enemy player from knowing how much you habe left, as well as where those units are. Its a great way to confuse players and keep them on their toes. If they didn't notice those units you could flank with them later.

@28:00 I'm surprised that statue, like real ones, had his umm twig and figs hanging out in the open. I say this because the naked warrior units have a loin cloth on, but that statue is full on nudity. I guess it being art makes it ok compared to an actual living person with the naked warriors.
This is not important in any way at all to anything, I just found it surprising that they would have that in the game.

Knights vs Barons Brigade. Cuz why not. It would be fun to see be better stratigest.
Problem with the slingers was the player giving them too many orders all at once. Same with the units they were trying to pull back. IF you tell them to run in 3 different directions or shoot multiple different units nothing is going to happen.

Syracuse had a great stategy but bad execution. Chasing the Boei out of his arrow tower range, or never covering his own flanks, charging his own spearmen with cav.
So I've watches up to 15 minutes and yes I think they have made a difference by fighting outside, if not so much to get the full benefit of the skirmishers they've kept them back and now time is against the attackers. What I would have done is kept the troops in a more organised position, closer to the wall.
