- I'm sorry to report that "My Songs" by Sting is just about as pointless as I feared it might be. There are a few things about it that add value though. Watch this video for the details!

My Philosophy: I love music. I love all kinds of music. And I go into every album wanting to love it, so that’s my starting point for every review. Keep in mind, though, that music is a very personal thing. An album may hit me personally in a very different way than it hits you. That’s complexly natural and unavoidable, which is why I try to include some personal context in my reviews. It’s so you’ll have a better idea where I’m coming from. In the end, it’s still just my personal opinion, which is inherently biased, and which you may or may not agree with. Hopefully, once in a while, we’ll find common ground.

Huge Police and Sting fan. I did not even preorder this CD collection. I have the Sting solo box set and his recent new album and every Police CD. I will stick with them.
That's pretty much all you need.
Sting is one of my all time favorites and I have seen him live many times. I listened to the tracks on this album today and I cringed and winced throughout all of his reimagined “updated” songs. It was so tragic.
I felt the same. It made me sad.
And he thinks he was the Police when without Andy and Stewart’s abilities, listen to the results! Terrible! He just exposed himself and made himself look bad!
I was also disappointed that most of the songs are carbon copies. But I'll say these tracks have higher fidelity than the original. For example , I really like the guitar clarity and stereo separation on "Message in a Bottle." However, I was listening to "English man in New York" in the car, and the car horn threw me off.
LOL! I didn’t think about the car horns that way! I’ve had that confusion with sirens in songs before, though!
Great review. I agree 100%. I found myself thinking, "If this were someone else's cover of Sting/The Police, it would be ok."
And even then it would be just ok, not good or great.
I think the album only exists so Sting could license his hit songs for commercials, TV, movies, etc. and get all the money because another company owns the original versions. Also it cuts out the other two members. Many bands have done this, getting their songs as close to the originals as they can.
I’m certain you’re right.
As I heard one of the tracks (The Police) I imagined Sting being forced to sing with the band at a wedding he was invited.
LOL!
If sting needs cash(i dont think he does.) Give us deluxe editions of all Police albums. And a handful of his soli albums. Dream Of The Blue Turtles can be a 3 disc edition alone.
I'd LOVE to see deluxe editions of those albums!
Ultimately Sting bears the blame if these songs disappoint. Ever since he stopped working with Hugh Padgham (after Mercury Falling,) half his projects have been produced -- overproduced actually -- by Kipper. This is where everything became overwhelmed by technopop and excessive sampling. Kipper doesn't seem to see that this doesn't enhance the songs as much as bury them in electronic rubbish.
Sting use to have lush sounds, jazz-fusion, and his lyrics and hooks were clearly in the driver's seat. Today his stuff has never sounded more disposable. I hope some time he can go back to penning adult contemporary music like he did in the 1990's. Not derivative stuff as found in "Sacred Love," but something fresh, lush, and jazzy.
I totally agree. I haven't loved any of his albums since Mercury Falling.
@@TrackXTrack+ I'm an old enough fan to still have the "Turtles" CD I bought back in the 1980s. To be fair, there are some individual tunes that have been quite good that are post "Mercury," but not produced by Kipper: "So To Speak" from Last Ship is quite nice. Many of the credits tracks he did for movies are pretty good, as well as classic jazz standards he's done; Someone To Watch Over Me, Lonely Old Town, etc.
There were also a few nice tracks on his Lute CD as well as his Winter CD.
What frustrates is his older CDs were mostly gold with only the occasional clunker; the price paid was the two-year plus wait between albums. Now he's cranking out stuff all the time, but it's forgettable for the most part. He's essentially turning into Phil Collins. Not a good sign...
My advice; instead of buying the earlier best of Sting/The Police album, buy his most recent two disc ‘Best of 25 years’ compilation (good to have even if you own his best solo albums due to live songs, including a version of Russians which is a grower).
Plus a best of The Police is pointless as most of the songs they ever recorded were excellent, so just buy all their albums.
Good suggestion.
Really great video. Extremely well articulated and thought out. Definitely one of your best videos.
Thanks! I appreciate the compliment!
Sting is one of my favorite artists both in The Police and solo. I agree with your review wholeheartedly. This is probably the best review video you've ever done. You really said it all, for me anyway. Way to go, Kyle. Maybe it's just me, but I feel you really care about this release.
I have tons of respect for Sting, and I've seen him in concert several times over the course of his solo career. I think any fan knows he's much MUCH better than this.
Thanks Kyle for the very blunt review. My wallet will stay in my back pocket. I will not be fiscally stung by Sting.
Not a bad call.
superbly well informed review!
Thanks for checking it out!
You must always have a real drummer!
You are right Kyle. I like Sting but this was an utterly pointless album.
He should have gone more stripped down and acoustic.
That would have been so much more interesting.
So Lonely feels so soulless... It only made me go back to listen to the originals.
This whole album makes me want to go back and listen to the originals.
My Songs exposes that Sting was not the Magic behind the Police! He wrote and sang the songs yes but without the talent of Stu and Andy, it just sounds bad! He never would have made it as big without them! The songs sound terrible! He just made himself look bad and exposed himself.
Bravo.
Thank you!
You remind me of a older version of Anthony Fantano
I'm his dad.
JK
The bass mix on this one is really bad. It destroys the original vibe of the song big time.
three commercials later, lots of verbiage later and half way into the video, anon, anon, anon..... noise, noiseeeee. Well he just goes on like freeway traffic.... THERE IS NO MUSIC HERE, NONE
We didn’t need Sting in the first place. Bellboy!
