    On a tough day, I love watching beautiful skating programs. It's been a very difficult time, but the joy that Paul gives to the audience can be felt by all of us watching today. Be of good cheer, everyone! Best wishes for good health to you. With lots of love, always, from the United States.

    This is still one of my favorite skating moments. Paul was my favorite since 87 olympic festival. There wasnt much skating on tv back then, and Paul always got shafted from the World's broadcasts even though his 90 and 91 LPs were great. Still, i always saw him year after year in the Jimmy Fund harvard exhibitions on pbs, random intl meets, and of course US Nationals, where he was always the crowd and Dick Button's favorite.
    Leading up to 92, nobody gave him a chance. Even with that performance, he was WAY undermarked. It took falls from the big names - world champ browning, world bronze Eldredge, and slip up from bowman for Paul to even be top 5. In reality, Paul was the most complete skater of the bunch when he hit his jumps, like here. He was unmatched in energy, speed, enthusiasm, educated nuanced choreography, and all the extras (best split jumps, best spreadeagles, best spiral/extensions, best camel spin, best scratch spin). Ive never been more nervous for a skater than Paul's performances here, first this then the LP. It remains my personal favorite Olympic moment of all time.

    Although it may not have impacted the final result, I definitely think he should have been 2nd after the short. This short program was outstanding... such a complete performance... spins, footwork, jumps... comprehensive in terms of content. Marks should have been higher... Having said that, When you think about the rampant amount of political judging from this era in particular, the fact that a skater who had never finished higher than 9th at Worlds and never won his own national title would be taken as seriously as he was by the judges tells you he had the skills and talent to compete with the best in the world.

      I think in this case he was one of those skaters the judges always wanted to give the scores to, but he always messed up. Once he mentally put it together, they gave him all the points!

    Never understood Wylie's selection being "controversial." Paul came in second at Nationals, Mitchell third. Nationals were the Olympic trials at that time. What should have been controversial was picking Eldridge, who was injured but a World medalist the year before, over Mitchell who came in third. What special thing did Mitchell do that made him jumping over Wylie expected? In fact, the controversial act, in my opinion, was selecting Mitchell over Wylie for the World spot, a place Wylie earned at Nationals. After 26 years, finally got that off my chest.

      As someone who saw '92 US Nationals in person, Mark should have won both the short and the free.
      Wylie had excellent skating skills, but his jumps were really off for the entire competition.
      He was very lucky to even be fourth after the short program, and should probably have been fourth overall behind Mitchell, Bowman, and Scott Davis.
      With Eldredge unable to skate his best and bombing in Albertville, it's painful even now to think about the decision to keep Mark off the Olympic team.

      Bnizzofashizzo agree. Think he could have been one of the all time greats, but school figures (pre 1992) and lack of confidence held him back. But so wonderful to see someone put it together and show the world what he was really made of. Billy Mills and Dave Wottle in track and field come to mind when one thinks of underdogs who got it together and showed their brilliance.

    Lundquist is such a good commentator, though, I give him a pass on that comment. But it was not the wisest thing to say, especially since the selection of Paul Wylie to the Olympic team over Mark Mitchell was so controversial. But good for Paul Wylie for finally showing the world what he could do. Who would have thought that after a career of being an underachiever, he would have put it together at the Olympics, his last competition? Wow.

    The only reason Victor got the gold over Wylie is the lead he got after this Original program...without that Wylie would have won the Gold...!! Paul was amazing...!

    • @mikeg8375
      @mikeg8375 Рік тому

      Not true... back then they used factored placements. And that meant if somebody was 3rd or higher after the short program, they would automatically win the gold by winning the long program. Petrenko won gold because he won the long program. If Wylie had one the long program he would have won the gold.

    • @shimmeringfairydust3275
      @shimmeringfairydust3275 5 років тому +2

      He still outskated Petrenko in the FS. Petrenko did two great combinations, and the rest of it was an absolute disaster. If I’d been a judge, I would have given Wylie the gold, Barna the silver and (tough call here) either Bowman or Elvis the bronze. Petrenko’s performance was so historically awful, he would have placed no higher than fifth overall in my book. Love Viktor, but absolutely the least deserving winner ever in the sport. Yes, I know the American judge gave Petrenko much higher marks than Paul in the FS. But hey, I’m a skater, and Wylie’s poor prior international finishes hurt him. Had this been a non-subjective event, say like track, Wylie’s win would have been uncontested. Those of us who like to punish ourselves pick subjective sports, I guess...

      @@shimmeringfairydust3275 I would have Wylie in 1st but not sure about Barna 2nd. He did a 2 footed quad but Petrenko had a 3 axel/3toe (albeit an uncontrolled 3 toe). I would've given Bowman 3rd since he did a clean 3 axel (turn out) and a 3/3 and several triples. His style was nicer IMO than Barna's and Stojko's.

    Incredible skate. His marks, however, were outrageously low. This program was a 5.8-5.9 technical and 5.9-6.0 artistic, easily. If he'd received the marks he deserved in the SP, he certainly would have won gold with his amazing LP, the way he should have at these games. The only reason he didn't get gold is because the judges so drastically underscored him here, and for a flawless program. Oh, the days of eastern block judging, handing the gold to Ukrainian, Victor Petrenko, even after falling 3 times and missing a 4th jump in his LP. Petrenko's LP is without a doubt the most unworthy gold-medal winning skate in Olympic history....followed by that other Ukrainian's, two-foot landing fest, Oksana Baiul. Paul Wylie was robbed, big time.

    • @elainesnow326
      @elainesnow326 6 років тому +2

      lcowles he still should have won gold. Petrenko’s free skate was dreadful, the worst of any gold medalist. Skating being such a political sport, there’s no way the judges were going to let a skater whose highest world placement was ninth go home with the gold. Had I been judging, I would have given Wylie gold, Barna silver & Bowman bronze. I would have put Petrenko fifth, due to that dreadful free skate full of falls and downgraded jumps. And, unlike poor Kurt Browning, he didn’t have the excuse of a back injury.

      @@maryspencer4975 It's because the fix was in for Petrenko. Paul's loss at the '92 Olympics is, to me, the most outrageous example of judging corruption under the 6.0 system, followed by Baiul's "gifting" of the gold in '94. The new Code of Points isn't perfect. Judges can pump up the scores for preferred skaters with fake GOE and PCS points, but I'm so glad the 6.0 system is gone forever.

      @@rolandgreen7484 Barna couldn't do a triple axel. He didn't have one, and Paul did. A triple lutz, triple toe isn't as hard as a triple axel, double toe. Paul's combination was more difficult because of the triple axel. That was the most difficult jump in skating at the time. LOL If you watch skating, you should know that. Paul certainly should have placed ahead of Barna, No question about it. Barna didn't even do a triple axel in the LP. That's why he attempted the quad. Barna with his wooden choreogrpahy was nowhere NEAR as good as Paul.

      Carolyn F. He's not my favorite either, although I think his motives were truly good ones. Thankfully, NBC has replaced him with the more thoughtful pair of Johnny Weir and Tara Lipinski. They never get overwrought and in fact correctly called the winner of the very close ladies title in 2014. Scott still hangs round for some commentary but it's way less than when he called this skate. That aside, he has been diagnosed with yet a third brain tumor. As a seemingly nice guy and fantastic skater, that saddens me to no end. Many prayers to him and his family!
