Both vaginosis and vaginitis involve the vagina, but there's a key difference :
the suffix " -osis " means a lot of or excessive for example when you say " Endometriosis " it means there's excessive or a lot of endometrium in other sites than uterus
so when I say "Vaginosis" it doesn't make sense to say it alone it has no meaning and it should be " Bacterial Vaginosis" which means there's excessive growth or a lot of bacterial growth of the Bacteria in the vagina (which exactly what happens in case of bacterial vaginosis when the acidity of the vagina decreases due to menses or seminal fluid or vaginal douches the bacteria in vagina take use of this disruption in ph and replicates in excessive way that's why It's called " Bacterial Vaginosis "
and in Bacterial vaginosis there's no or minimum inflammation so we don't call it " Bacterial Vaginitis x " we call it " Bacterial Vaginosis "
meanwhile the suffix " -Itis" means inflammation
and there's a lot of cases that causes inflammation for example vulvovaginitis in children or atrophic vaginitis in post menopausal women and so on
      Hope this makes sense
