I own one. In my 1967 3/4 ton pickup. Bought it in high school in May 1986 for $100. My Dad and I overhauled the engine and as of today- June 22, 2021, it's still running like a champ. The guy that owned the pickup had let it set for about 8 years and the engine gummed up. He was going to cut the truck up and make a trash hauling trailer when we found it was for sale. Best $100 I've ever spent and at 52 years old, it's still my one and only pickup I've ever owned. That V6 is bullet proof. One easy way to give it a lot more power and economy is put dual exhaust on it. Open'r up and let her breathe!

GMC Made the 305,351,379,401,432, and 478 V6 engines from 1960-1974. The 351-478 were available as Magnum engines. The 351C, E, and M made more torque than the 305. The 266 figure you mentioned was probably Net power ratings. 280 foot pounds was a Gross rating for the 305E in 68. I have a 305E in my 64 GMC, I took a magnum intake and opened the plenum to fit a 4 barrel carb, I also split the exhaust and put on some flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Woke that engine up big time. They are torque monsters. Heavy, little thirsty, but will pull just about anything you can put behind them. May not be as fast, but they will do things better than V8's their size. If you need help finding parts send me a PM. I just rebuilt mine.

Military Chevy hopefully you will see this but I just bought a 65 6500 and I’m still trying to find out what size V6 it has. Will need a water pump for sure and the motor has no power still deciding on wether I want to rebuild after I do more research. Afraid the timing may be wrong as somebody before me put a new cap rotor and points in the truck.

    • @militarychevy711
      @militarychevy711 4 роки тому

@@wesjwaandrews7524 You can find the cubic inch and series stamped on the passenger side front of the engine right above the water pump area by the cylinder head. There's a little ridge there with it stamped. Timing set at 6 to 8 degrees stock and be sure to do a valve adjustment. .012 intake and .018 exhaust at operating temp. Double check how the plugs wires were routed as I've seen them wrong.

Friend of mine had one of these in his mid sixties GMC truck not sure which size, and being a solid lifter engine it sounded a bit like a slant six, but boy what an amazing stump puller it was-!! The truck had a four speed manual and you didnt even need first gear on take off, it drove away in second gear like it was first, some of this was gearing im sure but I agree this was an amazing hi torque workhorse engine-! Only V engine I ever saw with the spark plugs on the intake side of the head.

I've only ever seen one of those GM V6's in real life. It was in a junk yard near the bottom end of 78th St near Riverview FL. It was in a heavy duty GMC truck.
Same junkyard had a 1958 Imperial with a 392Hemi(dual quad). I tried for months to talk the guy out of that Hemi engine, but he didn't want to sell it.

They also made this engine into a "Toroflow " diesil...didn't work out to well. Good as gas engines. I had a 305 in a pickup and a 478Magnum in my 1974 7500 boom truck. Good motors burned a lot of gas. Ford made a 534 v8 and IHC made a 732v8 back in the old days before diesels became popular. They also made a v12 out of these motors 1mpg under load...

I put a larger Holly carb on it which really made it come alive - but worsened the already bad gas mileage. What I really like about that truck was the bulletproof drivetrain. It was originally a snowplow, and really built for work. Wish I still had that truck

My brother who is 10 years older than I am had a 67 Impala SS with a 409 W block which looked identical to the 305 V 6 that was in dads 65 GMC 1 ton truck. I learned how to drive in that old truck when I was like 12 years old in 74 it was a 3 on the tree no power steering and no power breaks and a carburetor What fond memories I have of pumping the gas to make it go and the breaks to get it stopped and using both feet to operate all three pedals at the same time all while double clutching just to shift gears. I would love to see today's kids try and drive something like that.
looking forward to hearing this engine run.

I used a 72 8500 Chevy 401 v6 dump to build my camp road back when. I revved it out before shifting and got poor gas mileage. I read somewhere the proper way to operate the truck was to shift in the peak torque range, about 1400rpm. Well, my mileage went from 4+ to 5-6, loaded, a huge improvement. Still got her. Nice work here. Also, a side note, supposedly the best chrome vanadian steel is used in the block, for super strength and endurance. Short shift these things!

when i was a teenager working for neff constructing company i had to resurrect one of these in 351 form and drove the critter(a victim of years of neglect). it resided in a single axle dump that we regularly over loaded and it rarely complained. it would get pissed off on dirt sites but did fine on tarmac. had to add a six blade fan. two speed rear and a top load 4 speed. 65mph top speed(scary until i found out bus tie rod ends would fit it-originals were shot) and a low side that would pull stumps with enough traction. ate fuel at an alarming rate for a 2bbl carb engine but started easily all year long and was quite smooth.very tough engine. unique sounding also.

Hall-Scott built a 1081 ci six inline - common in the 1940's. I-H built some serious six's also. All kinds of trucks ran serious gas engines back in the day when gasoline was $0.10/gal. But a lot of truck companies ran "commercial gas" which was lower octane than Regular ... So most were 7 1/2 to 1 compression ratio. None are cost effective to run on modern gasoline at today's prices. But maybe of LPG or CNG :D
All these engines run best at 2,500~2,800 RPM. No real point in winding them as that is just higher fuel consumption. You want to go faster, shift :D

I would imagine that aftermarket support for these engines are almost non-existant. Would love to see a Holley four-barrel blow through carb with twin turbo on one of those 478's. That thing would probably absolutely rip.

60 degree, smooth. Interesting engine designed from the ground up as a V6, opposed to those early rough running 90 degree Buick v6’s. I think a modern engine equivalent is perhaps the Ford v10. Long lived, cheaper than diesels, but gulp fuel.

I think you should put a big 4 barrel carb on that thing. Making a sheet metal intake should be no problem for a guy with your skills.

had a 351 v6 in a 1970 gmc 5500. Had more snot than a 350md motor the chevy mediums did. Those didnt need a big carb as with the bore and long stroke there was pleny of time to gulp air from a 1 or 2 barrel

FYI, GMC circa 1953 made an INLINE 6 of 505 ci, and a very rare 707 ci inline 6. Mack also had a 707 gas inline 6, but I believe the largest gas I-6 was by Hall-Scott, at around 1000 ci, used in fire trucks (and boats, Im sure).

..I remember the first time I ever saw one of these engines..it was on the floor of a shop, like this...I asked the shop owner what it was...I thought it was a Chevy 348 or 409 when I first spotted it, was real excited when I saw it, I was really into the 348-409, and the shape of the valve covers is what caught my attention...then I saw the GMC on the valve covers...shop owner responded; "That's a GMC truck V6"...I looked at it a little closer, and said:"I'll be darned..it IS a V6, isn't it?...never seen one before"....

I drove a 1/2 ton 62 GMC with a 305 and it was a fairly powerful engine but it was a gas hog and that was in the early 60s and it would not get 10 MPH. It was tough but you had to keep a sharp eye out for gas pumps.
