- Joe gets his Arc back from Leatherman’s Warranty department. The Social Media team at Leatherman reached out to ask if they could inspect his broken cutters, but otherwise the warranty process was completely standard. Has the Arc returned home stronger than before?
Why you try to cut the wire at the gap?how can something with a gap can cut through?
There are 2 type blade for the cutter..the long one is for soft wire and the short one is for hard wire.
And yeah, I also dont know why leatherman design the gap at the bottom of the cutter..
They have a diagram pointing to that gap as the wire cutter. That’s part of the issue here. If I was meant to cut wire somewhere else, it should be as clear as every other tool diagram they bothered to display on the package. Everyone wants it to be user error but it’s not how it is.
I was wondering the same thing!!! Try doing it properly in the center of the blade.
I was minutes away from buying an Arc... I won't until Leatherman has a clear fix... in place and shipping. This isn't acceptable and its a fairly commonly used function for the multitool also...

Great follow up video. It seems obvious that the new style cutters are the issue.
I have emailed Leatherman but had no reply.
Sadly my Surge came back from a warranty claim and now has the new cutters.
I have purchased several sets of cutters in the hope of getting some old stock, but no joy.
My fix for the issue has been to put EOD cutters in my Surge and third party cutters in my Arc.
However i feel Leatherman have a major issue to address and so far the lack of response is extremely disappointing.
Leatherman warranty repairs SUCKS! They sent me back my Surge back with the same problem. Thanks for the video.
I keep seeing people having vastly different experiences with them. Personally, they did a great job with my Wingman that had a broken tool and some rust.
The we see stuff like this video, where they didn't replace the saw? He verified it was his based on damage I would have expected them to fix.
The stiffening of the pliers with a cut is temporary but now "normal" for Leatherman.
For the wire cutter problem, we can cite a catastrophic decline in Leatherman's intellectual level...

Leatherman starts to circle the drain, when Chinese clones start beating it. Leatherman should be panic mode over this ; Total incompetence by Leatherman
I do agree that the pliers and cutters breaking is completely unacceptable on any tool by any manufacturer. I do think Leatherman is here to stay and is still a great company. Have several and I will confidently pick them over any others. This one however….
Stop milking it to no end. You are beating a dead horse. It is obvious bad design choice for wire cutters to leave that gap but I don't see a reason to demonstrate that hole can not cut the wire. To fix it just don't put wire in the hole. Yes I am aware Leatherman did not intentionally created wire striper for us but I must admit that hole makes stripping wires much easier.
Conflict is one of the best things to have in a UA-cam channel because even people who oppose my views leave comments and click Like/Dislike. The algorithm doesn’t care about anything but engagement. Also it’s not a good wire stripper, but I’m also unskilled at stripping wire.
I feel you Joe. Same problem with my Free P2, the stiffness and bond after using pliers makes these tool useless. Sent it to warranty and came back with no solution. The experience and frustration made me hate my leatherman. From there, I keep away from Free tech LM. Thanks for sharing your experience with the Arc. Now I switched the old version replaceable cutter from that P2 to my everyday carry newer Charge TTi.
Not saying it acceptable but what if you move the coat hinger forward slightly on the hard wire cutter, away from the pivot slightly to the point just before transition to the other cutter geometry. Do you get a clean cut then?
That's the logic thing to do. You cannot cut stuff with a hole.
Yes, doing this works much better. The pliers still get stiff though, so there is still an issue.
You see the gap... that the cutters obviously don't fully cut right there... move the wire up 5mm and it will cut. Is it slightly less convenient to move it 5mm? Sure... but what you suggest would also be less convenient... to buy a $150 spiderco magnacut foldable to carry as well as a $150 free p4, would cost more and you'd have 2 tools to carry instead of 1. Arc is great for me as I can finally go down to 1 carry tool.
Most of us didn't get that detailed box with the pretty graphics.

Leatherman seems to be the multitool equivalent of Apple: Only acknowledge problems when the community gets loud enough, do the bare minimum to "resolve," the issue and if you live outside the US you'll pay and arm and a leg (In this case, $320 USD) for it.
Its a shame because wire cutters this is not something new to figure out.

I have an arc as well and haven't had any issues with cutting wire or any other QC concerns. What's the point in keeping this tool if you're clearly not satisfied with it and you have many others at your disposal to use?
It’s been great for views lately. But ultimately I don’t have other reasons to keep it
There are clearly three problems all at once, making this whole saga a bit convoluted:
- There was a batch of cutters that were bad, it seems like most if not all of them ended up on new Arc tools. This is resolved by replacing the cutters, which Leatherman will do for free without the need to send the whole tool in.
- The new cutter style, which is what exists across the board now on all the tools and replacement blades, has this rounded geometry that makes it hard to cut wires when you put them too deep into the jaw. You can still do it, but it's annoying. Supposedly the geometry change is to prevent the cutters from causing binding issues.
- Arc pliar heads will, if squeezed too hard (cutting something or not) become very very stiff. This can be fixed by twisting the handles back and forth for a bit. But from what I've heard, this is an issue for the entire Free series, not just the Arc. I suspect that the force people apply using the rounded cutters trying to get them to cut is higher than with the strait cutters which cut more easily, which leads to a greater level of stiffness for them
The first issue is likely already resolved. The second is a design decision, which who knows maybe they will revert given all thd complaints, but I wouldn't hold my breath. The last issue though, is probably something we will have to live with. It's something to consider before buying. It works back out and gets loose just fine, but you might feel that that's not acceptable - and that's a reasonable choice. Personally, everything else about the tool works so we'll for me, and I'm not commonly cutting coat hangers, so for me I'm happy to keep my Arc. For those that need to do this all the time, this may not be the right to for you. Or you might just want to keep a regular pair of wire cutters with your coat hanger stash.
Oh, and there are always after market cutters too. Shame to need such a thing, but they exist.
Wow...just wow...the action was very nice until you tried the cutters...at least the first time, before its swan song, it cut then the cutters shattered - now, they won't cut, & the pliers got very tight...how frustrating & depressing...
The action on my arc got stiff because of the cutters. I removed the cutters to swap with my free and the action was back to normal.

Ok so before cutting wire,I've noticed mine Arc, pliers do get stiff when squeezing handles,not a problem I can loosen them,so Im not so what gauge of wire I just cut,it's a metal wire they use to secure bikes in a crate,it cut it flawlessly,no dents in cutters what do ever,I'm gonna get some knife oil pen an lubricate mine an see it that helps to stop the stiffening of the pliers an also finish breaking in my tool,I believe the wire I cut is a tad thinner than coat hanger wire,I'll try to switch cutters from my surge an see if they'll cut coat hanger with my Arc,which shouldn't have an issue with those cutters an try cutters from Arc on my surge an see if they break on my surge from cutting the cost hanger wire if that makes sense.
Ever since I seen videos of the arc coming out and the review it seemed underwhelming and disappointing it just seemed like a rushed "upgrade" for the p4 but with me already having one and with me buying the t-shank holder and bit holder from zap wizard I can make my own "arc" with the better older cutters if Leatherman doesn't step up there quality looks like I'm done buying anything new from them
Yeah that's crazy when a cheap Chinese made MT works better than a 230 dollar American made Leatherman what the heck.
I carry the Free K2, busted 3 pocket clips and the tip off the main blade. I had a P2 but sold it. The Free range by Leatherman was a big miss, they seem to be digging the hole deeper now.
I have an arc and havent had any issues. Ive cut hanger wire, wood screws, small nails, stranded steel cable, among other things. Most users are used to just throwing the hard wire all the way to the bottom of the cutters and cutting it. With the new design on the cutters, you'll want to place the wire above the gap in the slightly recessed area. The recessed area is the hard wire cutters, not the gap. I do like the old wire cutter design better, but the new ones arent bad if you cut in the right area. Ill link a short i did cutting a wood screw no problem with mine. I can understand the frustration, but I truly don't think its a fair judgement when not using it as designed. As of the plier head stiffening up after really clamping down on it, thats been an issues since the free series was introduced. I had a p4 and it did the same thing. Thats a pain in the neck and im surprised they havent fixed it. Normally a little lube will help remedy that.

Thanks for the video,I've not had this problem yet with my Arc,I just got it Tuesday after my birthday,I've not had any wire to cut with it yet either,but I will soon an let you know if I have the same issue,also, could you just switch cutters from your free p4 an out on the Arc an see if that makes s difference,I've seen people who had one do this an no issues,I want to order from Leatherman a replacement set just in case I have bad cutter's as well.
Basically they didn’t do shit to your tool to solve the problem! IMHO this is a tool that is not worth the $250!

Buy a wave plus and the bit kit, sheath, and bit extender
@@davidlocke1668 My Wave+ does the binding thing whenever I squeeze the pliers hard and I have it for 4 years, so it's not about breaking in the tool. That's the main reason for why I upgraded to ARC, which is a very well made fine instrument and I'm very happy with it.
Don't be disappointed by stuff you don't have. Most of these people who are doing these videos are doing it for the views.
Regarding the wire cutters, just don't try to cut hard steel wire by pushing it all the way down to that hole. You cannot cut stuff with a hole. Simple as that.
These multi-tools are not made to replace specialized tools but to get you out of trouble.
ARC is the finest multi-tool I had and is a light saber compared to Wave. If you can afford it, get it and if you don't like it, return it.
Honestly, it's not really that big a deal. The bad/brittle cutters should be cleared from inventory by now, and if not they will send you new cutters. The rounded cutters are harder to use, but if you just move the wire up a bit they cut just fine (he doesn't try this in the video, but I tested it on mine). Yes, the pliers will get stiff after a hard cut but you can work them back out, mine are back to as they were when when I got it pretty quickly.
But the question is: are these issues going to majorly effect your use case? If you cut wire often, then that's probably a big deal. But do you? Because everything else about the tool is fantastic IMO.

Thanks for posting the video. You need to cut at the top of the hard wire cutter section, not at the button.
Nobody wants to take the time to place the hard wire in the exact spot. All of the previous models you don’t even have to think about it
I've gone through two P2's and both have stiffen up like your ARC. My second one P2 I got back from warranty got worse than the first.
As of yet I still haven't had this problem with my P4 and ARC.
I have the Arc and I switched the cutters from my free p2 and cut a clothes hanger into 20 /30 2 inch pieces and no binding and works perfectly! 2 problems is 1, it should have come with the proper cutters from jump street and 2, I think you got a defective pair of pliers because they're not binding, mine cut fine, and thank you for pointing this out! Makes me feel better after I wasted 240.00 dollars....
I've used a MUT for over 10 years. I've had to use the cutters many times while unable to clearly see what i was cutting, either in the dark or a cable stuck behind something. That gap makes it impossible to work "blind". It's stupid. And there's far too much flex in the handles when you clamp hard.

@@inkiron3907Leatherman indicates a part for cutting wires and a part as Hard wire cutters... why do you persist in trying to cut where the hole is? In my opinion you are using it improperly...at most complain about the new design of the wire cutter....even on the new P4s you will find that hole...

Stick with any victorinox swisstool, cutters not replaceable but because of the build quality you can cut wire coat hangers all day long. 🤘
I used to think people were overly critical. My view has changed. It’s a $230 tool. It shouldn’t have problems like this. My $70 leatherman rebar doesn’t have the quality control issues that the newest latest and greatest multitool from leatherman. My rebar doesn’t bind up like this and it is broke in and falls apart just like a free or arc series. This is a bummer.
Hey Joe I used the Arc as it was intended as a light hammer and both my bids fell out now I want to return it but I ordered a custom sheet from eBay what is the closest Leatherman multi-tool to the arcs size

My recently purchased Wave+ has the gap and won’t cut either. Did not break however.
At least they aren’t breaking… but they also aren’t cutting… very frustrating

Hey Joe, thanks for your input. I have to say that so far the Arc is more pleasurable for me to carry via the pocket clip, compared to my Surge. I appreciate the fit and finish of the Arc pocket clip, compared to using the pocket clip on the Surge. I have wondered why Leatherman puts the slot for the pocket clip for the Surge? The clip has a lot of side to side play, and I have only been carryig the Surge for 6months.
The handles on the Arc are another point that I like with this tool. The handles stay together (I believe due to magnets) and if someone has been a long time P4 or P2 user could chime in, and say if theirs still remain closed while clipped to the pocket? Again, my 6month old Surge that has been pocket clip carried now has the left handle unfolding as I walk. This was the impetus for me getting the Arc, because I found these handles opening in my pocket to be kind of annoying. There was no safety issue, it's just that to use the tool I would have to unclip the Surge from my pocket, close the handles, and then open the blade that I need (or other tool).
The Arc compared to the Surge is much more sveldt to carry in terms of weight and thickness. For me the pliers have been the least used tool for my Leathermans, and mostly I have used them when someone wants me to install a light switch or a ceiling fan. When the P- Series was launched I did buy a P2, and I do remember those pliers did bind up like what your showing on camera. I also recall the tools flopping out of the P2 when the pliers were opened, thankfully both of these issues I don't have w/my Arc.
Yes, I agree this was a big chunk of change to drop, I was considering a pocket clip capable Swiss Tool X, but I look at Leatherman tools as having more disposable parts, because if I tweak a bit, or in your case mess the cutters, at least I have the option to replace those parts, rather than be with out a MT, especially for me where I utilize the main blade as my primary knife. I sold my Arc. I was afraid that it wouldn't hold up to my use after my experience with it so I sold it to a guy who was waiting for a used one to pop up
Due to many users having this issue, I upgraded and replaced the cutters to ones with a 65 HRC. Easy fix.

Maxlvledc did a video on his today. Leatherman sent him replacement cutters and they were the old style WITHOUT the gap. I wonder why they just replaced your cutters with the same faulty type.
Oh, and anyone who would tell you to just shut up about the problem either has more money that sense and doesn't really use their tools or they are a fanboy that takes an problems with their beloved company personally.
I mean he has 20x the subs that I do. If I were Leatherman, I’d invest more attention in his channel than mine. That’s just economical decision making. They did my warranty return, which is all I wanted.

@@inkiron3907 Yeah, I get that he has more subs than you but if I were a company I wouldn't send a known faulty design to ANYONE. Especially someone with a social media presence. Even if the company is sleazy enough to only treat the bigger guys right it sets up a scenario like this where the smaller channel gets treated bad and it's viewers see that and think "if the company does underhanded stuff like this, what chance to I have?"
Leatherman has been going downward rep wise for a while now. They stopped listening to their fans, started increasing their prices more than their competition, they still have supply issues, and now the problems with the Arc while trying to keep a lid on it. All that has me looking at one of the Surge clones. Companies only learn when their bottom line gets dinged. It's time to start looking at other options. I would consider a swiss tool but I swore off pliers based multitools that don't allow the user to disassemble it themselves decades ago. The other big names have most of their line only assembled in America. If I'm buying stuff made out of the country anyway, might as well cut out the middle man.

Does your Surge have the cutter gap as well? I just ordered a Surge and it has the cutter gap like your Ark. I'm wondering if those are what they're putting on all their tools now.
My Surge has the gap. But it cuts through larger hard wire with ease.
My Surge is older so it does not have a gap in its original cutters. Nor does my P4.

It's not the tool that's problematic, it's the latest batch of cutters from Leatherman's supplier. I've swapped several of the old cutters (surge, etc.) from other Leatherman multitools (I own most of them) and the cutters work just fine in the Arc. The "footprint" of old vs. new cutters is identical. What's different is the fixture location (the screw hole) in both of the cutters. In the new batch of cutters, the hole location is .003" inboard on (toward the center of the tool), and this results in about a .006" gap at the bottom of the new cutters, and this explains the issue. The only "fix" is to wait for another batch of Leatherman-sourced cutters to arrive from their supplier, or source cutters from an old batch (or another of your Leatherman, earlier generation tools, like I did).
I’m looking at them with my naked eye and they don’t look the same profile to me. I’ll set out to measure this better than anyone else on YT because why not. I have a $50k microscope at work that’ll make for some awesome video

The cutters that come in the Arc have a radius on the outside bottom corner (closest to the pivot of the pliers head) and the older version of the cutters have a sharp corner. That is why there is a gap at the base of the cutters with the pliers closed on the Arc cutters. Hole location for the screw holding the cutters in the pliers is not going to impact anything - there is more than .003" in variation allowable for the major OD of the screw that holds them in place. The .003" would matter if they were dowel pinned in place and held there with a screw. Pull one of the cutters out of your Free and one out of the Arc and look at that bottom corner.

Well you can tell Leatherman that. I’m cutting at the point they designed to be a hard wire cutter. It’s not user error, I’m doing the EXACT same thing with every other tool in this video

What's with everyone cutting coat hanger.?!
That’s partially my fault. HVACBudget made a video about breaking his cutters on hanger wire. Then I caught my cutters breaking on camera while cutting coat hanger wire. Then MaxLvlEDC saw my video and broke his on camera. Then everyone started focusing on the cutters. It’s a moderate challenge for a hard wire cutter so when the new flagship Leatherman can’t handle it, it’s bizarre.
Not sure why coat hangars are a good test for a multi tool cutter. If you need to cut a hangar use the correct tool.
The main issue I see is the p4 and arc share the same plier head (from what I've been told) . So this must be a qc issue. My set of replacement cutters that I ordered are still rounded but they cut a little bit better than what came with the arc. I noticed the gap between the jaws is smaller on the replacements . The gap behind the cutter is still the same. Just to clarify, on the stock arc cutters , if I put copper wire on the hard wire cutter , they wouldn't cut all the way through as the gap(top to bottom) was just slightly to big . With the replacement cutters that gap is substantially smaller and it cuts copper wire just fine. Very odd qc(little to none) . That said I love my arc . The way I see it , I can get a p4 and magnacut blade but it'll cost more than the arc and be slightly less convenient in the pocket. I hope leatherman comes out and just be open that they made a mistake . We will see .
