A few thoughts on the concept of 'Post Truth' | Rabbi Jonathan Sacks

  • A couple of weeks ago, three excellent and interesting books came out in the same week with the same title. First was 'Post Truth' by Matthew D'ancona. The second one was 'Post Truth' by James Ball. The third was 'Post Truth' by Evan Davis. They are all responses to the Oxford English Dictionary's decision to choose the word 'post truth' as their word for 2017 and the dangerous and growing phenomenon of 'alternative facts', 'fake news' etc. Here are a few thoughts of mine about the concept of 'post truth' based on these books and why the resultant erosion of trust is so dangerous for our society.

    In my grad school experience, the essential environment of corruption consisted of a concerted assault on Truth. Pretty much any Ph.D student doing a dissertation based on the existence of Truth, would find their doctoral product dead on arrival. Your lecture here has awakened in me the urge to speak of this, which is my first time of doing so. Thank you, Sir Jonathon Sacks.

      I'm a Jew who has prayed in mosques to meet Muslims who did treat me well. I don't understand how there are these Muslims who follow the quaran but try to kill us. It baffles me and causes me to get upset at Mohamed for writing such things to cause these type of people called radicals. The Muslims I know are amazing people. I don't know the mean type but they exist. Hard to understand

    Very interesting indeed. I would offer that in a world of post truth, something called "accountability" will restore trust in politicians and leaders. This is something almost entirely absent in our present system.

    Great analysis of our contemporary situation. I think he is exactly right. But the question is, how do we recover a shared communal respect for truth in our highly diverse modern democracies? To what authority can we appeal that the majorities of our societies would accept?

    More than thirty years ago I worked for three different newspapers. The truth was often not as important as the goal.... sadly I stayed there for nine years until my conscience wrestled me away from there. In those days we still had Telex machines. Journalists would tear of a copy which were only a few sentences, write an entire story from that without leaving the office and then join the rest in the pub.....truth never was an issue.

    In my opinion the shortest line between where we are and restoring public trust in each other and our institutions is a reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine. We all love a good rumble. Let these people duke out their ideas in the media. It would make great TV and clean up a lot of really sloppy thinking. Many caricatures would be swept away and that would be healthy.

    There is a truth for every soul..and outside of God it cannot be found..".the secret things of God belong to God but the things that are revealed belong to us".....God speaks His truth to His people by revelation....apart from a relationship to God the truth inevitably is lost...

    Neo liberal capitalism, the growth of individualism over community, self improvement, these are modern constructs that a few years ago we thought were not so terrible but it is becoming obvious they are largely self serving and godless pursuits void of love , kindness, dignity, and respect. People and the planet have to come before the false prophets (profits) of the market and the market place. Like you say ,we should pursue honour, honesty and social coheSION..SION ..promised land.

    Where do we begin? We begin by considering the next bite of food we take. From where has it been sourced? Is the food we consume moral? If what we feed ourselves has been manufactured, grown or raised immorally, how can we hope to be moral individuals? The answer to so many vexing problems of our time (social, moral, economic, environmental, health) is in an honest, moral and healthful Plant Based Diet. When we respect our body, we begin to respect those around us and the energy radiates outward. The reverse is also true.

    Sam Harris in his book called The moral landscape argues that we can be moral by reason alone. I found that book challenging and interesting.

    • @boliussa
      @boliussa 6 років тому

      +Pablo I heard Sam speak and he admitted that strictly speaking, science can't determine moral values.. But he said that it's almost the case that it can, since if we accept that the worst possible misery for everyone is bad, then he thinks it can. He might then say it can determine them. It can certainly inform them. He does show that there are right and wrong answers to moral questions (once one accepts that the worst possible misery for everyone is bad, and once one throws out dogma that gets in the way of that reasoning).

    • @tcorourke2007

    Problem with religions is that they give G-d a bad name. By giving the Creator a bad name the ground is shaky as it is based on fear, and not based on why it is better to be good than to be bad! In short: All wars in the name of G-d, the personal fear as we are told we are going to hell or, as in fact I heard a rabbi say that worse than hell is re-incarnation, repeating the very same dramas and perpetuating nonsense, or as some others say, if we don´t do according to their interpretations of the Bible (or other scripts), we will be finished forever never existing in any shape. Well? Is it the way you give humans honorable values? I think we should have been told the benefits of being "good" without the punishment thing... Humanity as a whole, has never been educated to become healthy humans (body and mind). Nowadays I hardly read books, I listen to a few rabbis as they are intelligent and classy, there is always an idea that can be precious. As a rabbi friend said to me once "you go on fishing".... Yes, I fish wisdom here and there putting together what I feel is of benefit.

    • @farhan33uk
      @farhan33uk 7 років тому

      +Sophia The very essence of any religion is the carrot and stick approach. The concepts of heaven and hell are present in a variety of ways in many of the religions. There is always a concept of eternal punishment by God if you do not follow the rules. The problem with that approach is that when people become fearless or skeptical of religious truths, they also become less religious as they don't feel the need to follow a certain doctrine, based on fear, to live their lives.
      Jewish people have somehow learnt to live their lives without going too deep into their scriptures. Being Jewish is almost as if it is a state of mind. So it's hard to compare it with other religions in its current state.

      Excuse me, I dont appreciate your statement near the end "Jewish people have learned to live..."

    as per 'Sapiens' the writer says that the religion is a myth and it is the prime source of max. of all our adversities that we are facing today...................I completely disregard it.
    Reason:- religion is only the tool through which we can shape our life into a better one and some aspects of this religion are different across the globe due to their geographical locations and thus they are categorised as follows:- Like Hinduism, Cristianity, Islam, Judaism, Buddhism, Sikhism, etc. If someone uses it to manipulate others minds in a negative way then that doesn't mean the religion is bad. It only shows the level of corruptness of the preacher and the level of unassertiveness of his followers.
    For eg. :- if i had a piece of metal in my hand which is used to make utensils which ultimately used to help ourselfs to feed our stomach properly. Right...............but in place of that we use that metal to make a sword or some weapon and hurt certain peoples. Then that doesn't mean that metal is bad, it only shows the corruptness of its users.
    Religion was made to make our lives happy and easy but if someone uses it as a political tool and you fell for it then its your problem not the religion.

    I am simply a heretic and as such I do not ask permission to say what I think. The Truth is what everyone has to accept; this is more true speaking of morality. The same thing happens to a heretic like me as to the prophet Jeremiah (I appreciate the clue in chapter 9) we may be telling our truth, nobody will listen to us, and God knows where we will end up. In the case of Jeremiah the Jewish people ended up in the Babylonian exile. What could be done to modify a popularly accepted code of ethics?
