    I've just gone back to this video as have just started my first Mirabilia and there will be quite a lot of beading. You've made it really simple for me so thank you very much. I'm actually looking forward to beading now whereas before I was quite daunted by it:-))

    Thanks for the great video and all the information. I am working on my first big Chatelaine now and I have all the beads ready, but I am trying to finish all the stitching first. I am sure I will refer back to this when it is time to start beading.

      Thank you - which Chatelaine are you working on (sorry if you mentioned it already!)? I do all my beading at the end too!

    I have never stitched with beads, so I thank you for the information on beading.

    Great video, loved all the information you gave on the different types of beads. I found this a very useful video. Along with McKenzies demonstration. It was great to learn about invisible thread as I'd never heard of that before.

      Do you make the crossword pattern first or you do you need as you go along

    I am stitching my first project with beads, a Mirabilia mermaid. I watched several beading videos before starting. There is a video by CrossStitchTV showing the parting of the 2 strands around the bead that you described.
    There is also a very useful video by StitchingWithAShimmy which shows how to make a Mill Hill bead lay diagonal-left, diagonal-right, horizontal, or vertical. Basically the same method McKenzie demonstrated.
    Thank you for the in depth information on the various types of beads and the differences in the finishes. I received my bead pack for my Chatelaine today and was so pleased at the colors and glimmer of the beads and crystals.

    Awesome video. One thing I would say regarding invisible nylon thread is you may not want to iron your finished piece directly on the back of the fabric because the thread will melt. Just place a piece of fabric over it then iron . Thanks

    • @mrsmilkybarkid3318
      @mrsmilkybarkid3318  10 років тому

      Thanks Vanessa - yes I always place fabric (usually a towel/tea towel) on top of my stitching when ironing, if for no other reason than to guard against scorch marks :). I usually iron my pieces before beading and then after the piece is finished I don't worry about it too much as it will be stretched and laced by my framer.

    Thank you for the shout-out! You are the best.
    This was so interesting. I ran into some irregular Mill Hill beads when I was beading and it was a pain in the butt for sure. Aha! Magnifica beads! I seem to recall that name when I bought those little gold beads, that explains the different shape.
    Those Delicas look marvelous ... so many varieties ...

      Thank you McKenzie - glad you found the video interesting, I do worry people won't! Yes - delica beads are so pretty and a joy to bead with. Of course you will find that out for yourself when you start Sparkling Swans.......... :)

    I tried stitching with that thread, and couldn't see it therefore it drove me crazy!! It was so fine and I couldn't even get it in the needle... I just match dmc that matches bead to fabric.

    Just wondered when you bead your Chatelaines - there seem to be two camps one as you go and one at the end so just wondered about your preference?

    • @mrsmilkybarkid3318
      @mrsmilkybarkid3318  10 років тому

      Nic, I leave my beading until the end, mainly because I work on scroll frames and don't want to damage any of the beads and can't be bothered to faff about with wadding etc :). I think with Beaded Dragonfly Tile I may have beaded a bit as I went and I did the beads in part 1 of Hortus V - both these are very small designs so I didn't need to scroll over the beads at any point. I love beading so it's never bothered me, but other stitchers like doing it as they go otherwise they suffer from "bead burnout" lol and may never get round to beading their finished stitching!

    May I suggest John James Ballpoint Beading needles? I find that with those needles I get the fineness but without the sharp point which drives me insane.

    Hi Amanda
    I hope you don't mind me asking a silly question but I am just working on a small mill hill kit and it's my first time beading. I know in your video you say to use nylon thread for beading and I am wanting to pick some up tomorrow but am wondering if there is a certain thickness that I need. All the videos I have seen about it don't state a thickness and google isn't being my friend tonight lol.
    Thanks :-)

    • @mrsmilkybarkid3318
      @mrsmilkybarkid3318  9 років тому +1

      Hi Katie, firstly you don't HAVE to use nylon thread for beading, that's just my personal choice some stitchers detest it - you can just use a thread colour that matches your material. As for nylon thread for beading, you can buy specific thread (nymo is a popular brand name that comes in different thicknesses), but I just use the invisible nylon sewing thread that you get 200M of on a cotton reel and can get hold of really cheaply in any sort of sewing shop/haberdashery! I've sewn on thousands of beads with it and they are all still present and correct on my pieces :).

    I've just found your videos and find them really helpful. Thanks for sharing. I'm in the middle of Lady of the Mist (Mirabilia) which suggests Mill Hill beads. This is the first project I've worked on where beading was in the chart. How do you store your Mill Hill beads once you open the little packets - the ones I have are not resealable?

    • @mrsmilkybarkid3318
      @mrsmilkybarkid3318  10 років тому

      Hi Lorna, I store my Mill Hill Beads in the little clam shell containers they come in which are then stored along with my other beads in a cake tin - not much use to you! You can buy all sorts of storage for beads, bead caddies or little stackable clear pots - I guess it all depends on how much you intend to bead in the future and if you see your collection growing :).

    I am almost finished with the stitching part of my Celtic Summer and I stitched her on 18 count aida. My silly question is, will my size 11 beads be okay on that count of fabric? Also do you know of a conversion chart for mill hill to delica beads? Thanks for doing this video, it is very helpful :)

    • @mrsmilkybarkid3318
      @mrsmilkybarkid3318  9 років тому

      You might find the beads are a bit of a squish as ideally size 11 beads are for 14/16ct and size 15 beads (petite) are for 18ct and upwards. Size 11 beads may look out of proportion with 18ct sized crosses, you could always change the size of the beads if it was an issue. There is no "official" conversion chart between MH and Delicas, but plenty of stitchers have done it themselves for various projects and shared their results - so Google can help you there :).

      Thanks for the info. On the Celtic Ladies there aren't too many that will be in a row so hopefully I will be okay. It's been a while since I did beading cuz I took a couple years off from stitching and I forgot all about that.
      Thanks again for responding!

    I have a couple patterns that I want to do that include beads that I have been putting off, I am going to have to pull them out and give them a go. Thanks for the information on beads and all I hadn't understood about the sizes working for different counts of fabric. Thanks for the info. Love the videos keep making them and I will keep watching. I watch while I stitch, lol
