4K is clearly really great, but I'm kinda digging the dark and cold look of the Blu-ray too...

Just wanted thank you for making this video. There were so many reviewers covering the Criterion 4k scan but never showed any samples to get an idea of the film's new color, resolution, nor dynamic range. It's so satisfying to get a greater idea now seeing much more luminance the 4k has, especially in the night time sequences that does show detail even in the darkest shadows.
I usually don't follow 4k review channels, but I'm defiantly giving a sub to you.

They really brought a lot of warmth and richness back into the film! I wasn’t going to upgrade this one before, but I’m highly considering it now.

I have had the original Miramax/Buena Vista Blu-ray since it came out, and I truly have no issues with it. As much as I like the film, I'd rather save my money and put it towards another title.
I never had an issue with the black levels on the Blu, at all - rich, deep and utterly stable. I didn't detect any crush, but I'm also set up properly.

I own this movie on 4k and confirm that the upgrade is simply beautiful! I watch it on a panasonic 4k blu-ray player on an lg 77' oled.

i actually like the sorta yellow tint, like some sort of dusty western aesthetic

I have yet to watch the 4K but in the comparison images, the hue of the 4K looks a bit too sickly piss-yellow/green in a lot of shots. I appreciate the wider range of tones and values but I may prefer the blu-ray colors overall personally. But the 4K does look better detail wise, as it should.

Black levels are better, but a lot of it looks like they took the same yellow hue from Universal's "Inglourious Basterds" bluray and smothered the daytime shots in it. Even Chigurgh standing outside the motel light at night looks unnaturally bright, like the light's coming from a color grade rather than the bulb above him. Some daytime shots are better though.

I had this saved in my Amazon cart, but every single image you showed, the Blu-ray looked better, more natural and realistic. The 4k version looked like it had a yellowish hue and also over exposure like I just turned the brightness up a little bit, which made it look unnatural. Just cause you can see a detail doesn’t mean you are supposed to be able to in the dark. That’s kind of disappointing. I was looking forward to this one.

This is exactly how the film was presented in the theaters and how it was shot and graded. The bluray manipulated the image where The blacks are so heavily crushed out, obsecuring the image and cinematography. The colors are not accurate. Idk i will always go with how the director and cinematographer. The filmmakers wants us to see their film and its original theatrical appearance. But to each its own. If you like it, enjoy. Also remember your watching this on youtube that compresses the hell out od videos. On your TV playing from the disc. Trust me you won't be disappointed

@ So after this conversation, the price dropped 40% on Amazon so I went ahead and bought it and got overnight shipping. Put it in tonight when I got home and the 4K looks like crap just as bad as solo a Star Wars story. The Blu-ray however, looks fantastic even a little better than the old Blu-ray I have. There was nothing I could do to make it look good and I have the Panasonic UB 9000 with the most advanced tone mapping of any player on the market and I’m watching on the Epson 5050ub projector with a 135 inch screen.. the picture was washed out and the colors were dull. I don’t think it’s right for the BT 2020 color space it looks better in 709.

After watching another UA-cam review of this release, trying to find out if it was just me that thought the picture was washed out, I had an epiphany. My projector only does HDR 10 and it’s 2600 lm for white and color equally cause it’s an LCD projector so I’m getting around roughly 700 nits, this release is in Dolby Vision and so I am going to try it upstairs on my Sony TV that has Dolby vision tomorrow and see if it looks better. I’ve only experienced this washed out picture on a handful of 4K discs out of about 100 that I own. Does your display do HDR 10+ or Dolby vision? Also, I believe I have a different Blu-ray disc than you. The cover art is different on mine and it also looks much better than your images of showing, it’s quite bright and the black levels are excellent.

so I tried both no country for old men and solo a Star Wars story on my 55 inch Sony X900 F upstairs and they both look perfect so I’m not sure why just these two movies don’t look good on my Epson 50-50 UB playing with a Panasonic UB 9000 when all my other 4K discs look perfect. I know my projector only does HDR10 & HLG, not HDR 10+ or Dolby vision. Other than that, I don’t know and I sure would like to..

Possibly your settings since it's like that on more than one movie. I pull images directly from the discs. I dont take pics from my TV. This way, it is exactly how it's meant to be seen.

@@TwinFlicks I just figured it out! It was my Panasonic player. I have to turn the HDR 10+ setting on, I’m guessing because this disc doesn’t have the base HDR 10.? so back to your original video this transfer looks outstanding! Thanks for your review and replies!

This is 5/5, 10/10, for me too.
There is beauty and details that I bet the crew that worked on the film is happy to finally see come to life.
AUDIO: I'd love to know more bg about why there is only the 5.1... but it does sound great. So no actual complaints...

I'm glad Roger Deakins approved of the new mastering, but I first saw the film shortly before its theatrical release at the Toronto Film Festival (expertly projected) and in several cases, the still images of the Blu-ray here feel truer to the tone of the movie as I remember it from theaters. So I'll keep both my BV/Paramount Blu-ray and Criterion versions (I haven't watched the latter yet). In the comparisons you show here, some of the "brightened up" images look almost like somebody has applied sitcom lighting to a dark and moody film. The question is not how much visual information can be retrieved from the 35mm negative, but what the filmmakers wanted you to see. In this picture, that includes some scenes of impenetrable darkness (like the murky motel room in which Chigurh seems to inexplicably vanish). As for Dolby Atmos, that technology didn't exist until about 2012, so it obviously was not used when "No Country" was made in 2007 or in the Blu-Ray release of 2008.

I'm only willing to pay for a higher picture quality if I'm seeing stunningly beautiful women or landscapes. I really don't need to see sweaty old dudes, barren wasteland, or bloody gore in 4K.

great movie! one of my all-time favs. got mine a few weeks ago. watched it a couple of times and thought the transfer looked great but your side by side REALLY told the story. it's not often a 4k actually brightens the picture. yeah...tossed my blu-ray too.🫵🏼
