You can usually tell by the gear changes. DSG fart come from dsg boxes (who would have guessed) a Mid to slow gear change with a crisp throttle off/on usually indicates manual, and if the engine rpm seems to lull down between changes rather than a crisp drop then that's ususally an auto. but it's not always 100% there can be cases where it's hard to tell. Knowledge of particular cars helps too.
the rules are a bit of a ball ache, but unless your a dick, you can usually get away with stuff. most police don't know, or care so that helps. you can get a jobsworth going over your car, but i've never encountered that.
